No, if the email entered doesn't have an account, it will show
That email address does not have a Groups.io account.
If someone enters their email address incorrectly when applying to your group, it should stay as NC.? Those are fairly easy to find in the Members list since they're now orchid color, so after a few days or a week, I just delete them.

I also try to check for hard bouncing (red B) members now and then.? I've set up a Remove notice that sends an email telling them they've been removed for bouncing, but I doubt they get it.? A few come back, but some seem to have abandoned the email account in question, so no loss.

Thanks, Duane.

Is there any danger of creating yet another io account by doing that?

Re: How many io accounts?

Thanks, Nancy!

That shows the groups for the current logged in account,?
but not the ones for another account, if a member has more than one account,

I am pretty sure that some members do, because they signed up with 2 emails addresses,
and unsubscribed before the merge function was added,
and did not indicate that they applied to have their accounts merged as I requested.

Also, one applied with a non-existant email address by mistake, so it can't be merged.

As far as I know they did not delete the unwanted .io account so it is still there,
causing potential login problems.

How many io accounts?

I am not sure if I missed this in a messages search and the wiki,
but how can a member/group owner tell if they have more than one groups.io account?

Thanks for any assistance,

If you use Toby's suggestion of downloading from the Members page, it will be a csv file.? It may open in the browser and you'll need to do a Save Page As..., but it works fine.

Re: Is there some way to 'HHIDE' a pinned post & later on un-HIDE it? #howto

Paul,

This Reminder Notice always has the same text, so rather than deleting and re-posting Reminder Notice each month is there some way of hiding and un-hiding that Reminder Notice? Doing so would be a big time-saver.

You could unpin it and re-pin it. Not exactly hidden, but while unpinned it will snap back to its place chronologically. Which will get progressively further down as more messages are posted.

Unfortunately, there's a shortcoming to pinned messages: they aren't pinned in the Messages or Expanded views, only in Topic view. I consider this a bug but it has never been fixed.

You might want to use a sticky Wiki page instead. It will look like this:

You can't hide it either, but you can select a different page or no page to be shown. See the Wiki controls in the Features section of your group's Settings page.

Is there some way to 'HHIDE' a pinned post & later on un-HIDE it? #howto

We have a regular Event that runs on our group for 24 hours (specifically Friday 12 am thru Friday 11:59 pm) on the last Friday of each month. We post a Reminder Notice for it to the group several days in advance each month saying that the Event is coming up. And for the Event itself we manually post one notice to Open it and another to Close it on the last Friday, the date of which varies from month to month.

But so that the Reminder Notice for this Event will get noticed we pinit so our members will see it near the head of the online message queue. But this Reminder Notice does not need to remain in place the entire month. We want it to be a timely, last-minute reminder that shows up a couple days before the Event.

This Reminder Notice always has the same text, so rather than deleting and re-posting Reminder Notice each month is there some way of hiding and un-hiding that Reminder Notice? Doing so would be a big time-saver. I am hoping that there's some way to do this which I may have overlooked.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

TIA

Re: 550 5.1.0 <[email protected]> sender rejected

Ro,

A long-term member has had messages bounced regularly since June 20 (12 just today). She called her service provider and they said it wasn't from their end.
?The error quoted in the subject text puts the lie to that statement: her service clearly rejected that message.

?
I see all of the bounces in her email history, but she is not in the "Bouncing Members" listing.
?That's unusual for a 5xy error - those usually set the email address on Bouncing status immediately. But the system has some exceptions in it in an attempt to cope with various email services having "issues" with inbound messages. I know Yahoo Mail has been one of those, and those hosted by Microsoft (hotmail, outlook, etc.) may be another.
?

Some,? but very few, of the bounces appear in the Activity log.
?None of the outbound message bounces should appear in the group's activity log. Those should ?only be listed in member's Email Delivery History. Anything you see in the group's activity log would reflect Groups.io rejecting inbound messages (sent to the group). So I'm not quite sure what you're saying here. More detail on the log entry might help clarify.

Can someone provide some guidance, please.
?She's having a problem with her email service accepting messages from Groups.io. ?Joseph's suggestion to change providers might be the simplest way to side-step the problem, if that's an acceptable situation for her.
?
Groups.io (Mark) does track deliverability problems to various email services, so there's a chance that he'll get this cleared up "behind the scenes" if it is affecting enough users of that service.
?
Otherwise she's left with going back to her email service and telling them "yes - it is you" - at least for the bounces listed in her Email History (outbound from Groups.io, sent to her service).
?
If she's also getting failure notices (from the "mailer daemon") back in her inbox when she sends to the group that needs to be handled separately, those probably are not her service's fault.
?

Re: downloading contact info #export

Go to your Settings page, then select "Export Group Data" at the top.? There you can select what you want and a zip file will be created for you to download.

If messages to her are bouncing, I would suspect that the member in question has a MS based address.? Seems it's quite a common problem for them.

If it's her messages to the group that are bouncing, I'd suspect that she's sending from a different address than she signed up with.

Go to Settings > Spam Control and select the first check box, Restricted Membership.? Anyone that tries to join will need approval.? If you invite someone, the approval is implicit.

I happen to be secretary/treasurer of a club with a group here.? We have the President, VP, and me as owners. (I also have a plain member account.)? We'll have elections for Pres & VP this year, so I'll change those 4 memberships appropriately (though probably only 3 in reality.)? I'm in for another year, so can stick around.? When I'm no longer Sec, I can stick around as technical adviser if they want , but I'd plan on adding the new one and bowing out.? We've handled it this way for about 12 years and it's worked well for us.

downloading contact info #export

Hello, I recently adopted this tool along with group manager responsibilities and was wondering if there's an easy way to download the email addresses of my group members.

Thanks,
Mathew

If she has a different email address I would ask her to switch her profile to that email address. Inside that might fix the problem.

IMHO electing an Owner for an on - line group would come within my definition of a High Risk Strategy. Firstly there are the "technical" problems to deal with; if these did not arise then the GMF would probably not exist. Secondly there can be "personality" problems; we all wish they didn't arise but there is no point in pretending that they don't.

Given that Group Owners / Moderators generally have little editorial work to carry out (other than in extreme cases) I cannot immediately see the need for such a change of ownership.

how to restrict group? #addmembers #howtoguide

hello all

sorry, newbie here...

how do I set my group to restricted?? I have it set that I have to approve a members first message, but I'd like to set it up so we don't get lurkers who shouldn't be there (this is a group set up to schedule children's activities over the summer...).? Can I set it up that someone needs to be approved before becoming a member?

help, please!!
