Re: Help interpreing a system message "because a message to them was marked as spam"

Shal, No worries.? We've been very diligent about vetting new members and politely enforcing netiquette so I'd rather be scolded than miss the point ;-)?
I've had this happen once before and observed at that time that the member almost immediately rejoined.? I put him temporarily on moderated status and looked at his past posts, neither of which showed anything worthy of concern, and unmoderated him a few posts later.

Your and Bruce's explaination and the link turn the tables correctly on what that actually meant.

Cheers, Peter

Shal, Bruce,?

Thank you both for the explanation and the follow up links.?

Much appreciated.?

Re: Help interpreing a system message "because a message to them was marked as spam"

Peter,

Bruce raised a good point when he wrote:

The message in question could have languished in his junk mail folder -- or any other folder in his email client -- for months before it was finally reported.

?So if the message really was spam (and I suspect that most of these cases are not) you may have seen and handled it some time ago. I regret the scolding tone in my prior reply, as if the message were necessarily recent.

?Shal

In either case, as the owner of the group where do I see the message in question to ensure it was an accurate assessment ?

To my knowledge there is no good way to look it up. The message in question could have languished in his junk mail folder -- or any other folder in his email client -- for months before it was finally reported. You can ask the subscriber, but if his email provider flagged it, the subscriber himself may not know.

?It means this. Or that the (former) member's email service marked the message as Spam and the member did not mark it "not-Spam" - however that is done in his email service.?
?

?You don't.?

?If it were an accurate assessment you should already know that (having received the spam yourself) and have taken action to keep your group from passing more spam.

Help interpreing a system message "because a message to them was marked as spam"

Hello,

I'm having trouble interpreting what the attached system message means.

Does it mean

a) This subscriber believed a message sent to him, from my groups.io list, was spam, reported it and thus the Groups.IO system removed him ?

or

b) Someone reported a message HE sent to the group as spam and thus he was removed?

In either case, as the owner of the group where do I see the message in question to ensure it was an accurate assessment ?

Thank you, Peter

?,

I have a member saying he cannot send to the address. He has an Italian extension.
Would there be any know issues or workarounds?

?Have a look in your group's Activity log for bounced messages corresponding to his attempted posts. You may find that he was sending from a non-subscribed address or that there was something else amiss.

If nothing there, have him CC you (at a non-group address) on his next attempt to post. If a copy arrives at your inbox but not at the group, you can double-check that he spelled the group's posting address correctly (and again that he was sending from a subscribed address).

Something to keep in mind is that every time you save an edit, a new message is sent.? Only owners have the option of saving it without sending.

Two of my list members had this happen recently. One member took eight minutes to respond and the other one took four minutes.

Go to Admin->Settings->Message Policies. UNcheck the box labelled "Disable Editing Posts." Be sure to click the blue "Update Group" button afterward.

To actually perform the edit, open the affected message online. Click the More menu at the bottom (just to the right of the "Like" button) and select "Edit Message" from the popup.

Hope this helps,

Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?

Jim,

I have always wondered why they were unsubscribed in the first
place if they were just going to be resubscribed automatically.
Resubscribing is not automatic. The (former) member is sent an email letting them know what happened. That email contains a link for them to resume their subscription. When they click that link then they are resubscribed.

Is this a groups.io setting/feature?
It is something Groups.io does (based on a report from the member's email service), there is no setting or option relating to it.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Removed-for-spam

I have not seen any messages go out to those members with a link to
resubscribe and certainly not instantaneously so I am having trouble
visualizing the actual course of events that happen.

Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I am a member of some of the 4SQRP groups and sub groups Tim was asking about.? I am also a member of several other groups and moderator of many and owner of some just like the rest of you.? What I keep seeing is that I will get a member unsubscribed message and immediately get a new message with that same member being resubscribed (without me approving it).? I have always wondered why they were unsubscribed in the first place if they were just going to be resubscribed automatically.? Is this a groups.io setting/feature?? Or is the member (all unsubscribed members? in this case) doing something to resubscribe?? I have not seen any messages go out to those members with a link to resubscribe and certainly not instantaneously so I am having trouble visualizing the actual course of events that happen.? Can someone enlighten me?

Thank you.

Jim

Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?

Received from Michael Pavan at 6/22/2018 04:01 PM UTC:

What is the need or reasoning behind "Automatic Unsubscribe"?

Is there a need??? What is it?

Why the punishment of "Automatic Unsubscribe" for:
a) members failing to check SPAM or JUNK folder before deleting
b) members purposely or accidentally marking a Groups.io message as SPAM or JUNK

Is this an attempt of Groups.io to boost its reputation as 'not a SPAM vehicle'?

If so, might it backfire on Groups.io by making it seem unreliable for members to stay subscribed...

This is a case of the needs of the many far outweighing the needs of the few.

It isn't about "punishment" of the automatically unsubscribed member; it's about the survival of the groups.

Members who mark messages as spam (or who don't reinstate messages sent to their spam folders for whatever reason) can lead their ISPs to block all messages from my groups as being spam... or even all messages from Groups.io. Enough of this and my groups gain a reputation for being unreliable... perhaps along with Groups.io as a whole. And if the latter goes far enough, Groups.io is then out of business. So I'm really pleased with the way Groups.io handles this by unsubscribing the member. I get a notice of the removal and can then deal with their feelings and perceptions about my groups... as well as how they'll be expected to behave if allowed to return. Emphasis on their future behavior.

One of my Hotmail addresses gets dozens of real SPAM messages most every day. I do check and pull out legitimate messages before clearing it out at least 3 times a day. I do know people who say they get 100s of SPAM messages every day, and we're all using Apple's Mail application... I do tell them they should check (and check more frequently), but they say they don't have time for that...

If they don't have time to do something that helps to assure the survival of the group(s) they subscribe to, then I as a group owner don't want them as subscribers. Cast one vote in favor of how groups.io is handling this sort of thing.

I don't either, HOWEVER, some email clients (like the one on my phone, but not my computer) automatically empty the spam folder of messages there that are more than 30 days old. I've had enough important messages (including some from business clients) flagged as spam over the years that I check my spam folder almost every day.

Re: Directory #directory

Bruce,

I edited the Display Name out of my profile. The Directory then showed my email address but without domain information.?

?I stand corrected.

If the member has no Display Name the User Name is shown instead. If the member has neither then the "fig-leafed" email address (mailbox name only, the part to the left of the @)? is shown.

I thought the ellipsis (...) was there because my email address was too long to display fully, but perhaps it's a protection feature.

?It is a protection feature, and is used site-wide where members might see an email address (mostly message bodies). Except in the Members list (if made available to members) or if the group is set to "Do not mask email addresses in the archives". But as Duane said, for most people it isn't much protection.
?
I don't like this answer, but it is the same answer as shown for postings by that member. So in that sense is likely "correct". I don't like the answer because it means that the fall-back position is to effectively show email addresses; and it is precisely members who most want to be anonymous who would be likely to naively eschew setting a User or Display name. Feels like it violates the principle of least astonishment.

On the other hand, Groups.io does attempt to fill in a user's Display name from any available source. Including Direct Add, Invite, and the From field of +subscribe addresses and responses to email verification messages. So just how did the naive user manage to avoid having a Display Name? Well, possibly be deleting it after the fact.

Other than going to something as ugly as a user number, I'm not sure what to suggest. And now that I think about this I'm pretty sure this was hashed out in beta ("back in the day") and this was accepted as the least ugly result. There may even have been discussion of doing as some forum systems do: assign such users a generated Display Name - such as by combining two words from word lists chosen to be inoffensive and unlikely to be used in actual names.
