Re: Transferring from a PG Offline database (.pg4) to groups.io #pgoffline

Dale,

He has tried numerous email logon's and can't get in.
... We may have to work harder on the issue of restoring the owner's
log in ability.
Look in your Y!group's Manage Members list, on the Moderators tab, and see what is listed for him in the Yahoo Profile column. The one with a blue crown, if he has more than one entry in the list.

That's the ID he needs to use to sign in as owner. Nevermind that the sign-in form now requests an email address, it still accepts the original Yahoo IDs.

I assume "Mark" is the head of Groups.io?
Yes, Mark Fletcher.

Click the link to the Groups.io announcement for more detail on the origin story.

So far, I haven't even set up the new group on groups.io, preferring
to ask questions first to make sure the direction we are going is
correct.
Ask away. I hope we can help.

Re: Inviting Members

June,

I have sent out invitations to new members but when they respond to
the email as in the instructions noted below, they don't seem to get
added.
"Seem"? - you should be able to tell for certain: look at the Sent Invitations tab of your group's Invite page. Or look in the Member Activity tab of your group's Activity log or the Members list itself to see if they appear.

I just tested replying to an invitation by email and it worked so there doesn't seem to be a general problem with the invitations. Both the From address and the Reply-To field of the invitation are set to the special address described by Bruce, so it should work correctly with just about any email interface's interpretation of "Reply".

If the members who didn't get added to the group are still waiting you could ask them to CC you (at your personal email address) on their reply to the next invitation you send them. That would let you carefully check their reply for whatever error they (or their email interface) might be making.

Or just advise them to use the link instead.

It's pretty much immediate, from what I've seen.

Ahh. I absolutely understand.

How Long for Messages/Digests to stop Being Delivered After Someone Unsubscribes?

Simple question:? Does anyone know how long it takes for messages and/or digests to stop being sent to someone who has unsubscribed?? I know with Y!G, it could take up to 48 hours.? Is there a timeframe for message/digest stoppage on Groups.io? I looked in the Help section, but did not see anything on that page that answered this question.? Thanks!

Log in to the site, go to?/?, and pull down the Hashtags menu at left.

Are they actually replying, or forwarding?

The invitation message has a special "reply-to" field that looks something like?[email protected]

If the reply message it later receives is not sent to that address, the invitation will fail.

Hope this helps,

Re: trying to set up my io group before I port my yahoo group over...

Jim is correct.?Note that these settings appear in the home page of your group.

If you have a public message archive, group messages can be read by ANYBODY...they don't have to even need to have a groups.io account. In my groups, we consider this a desirable thing to attract new subscribers; but if I was running a private group and suddenly decided to make all past messages public, I think existing subscribers would have every right to be upset.

Re: "Empty Messages"

If your group is set to Plain Text Only, a message that only contains html coding should be converted properly.

"Empty Messages"

Jim Higgins

When my groups were on Yahoo, Yahoo rejected messages to those groups that had no plain text parts.

How does Groups.io handle such messages?

There is no marking, it's automatic for a hashtag set as Special.? Only moderators can use those.? All this is mentioned on the Help page.

And one more.? ?I see on the help page that a moderator can mark a hashtag as un-mutable.? ?I can't seem to find where to do this.? ?Can someone point me to where?

Re: trying to set up my io group before I port my yahoo group over...

Jim Higgins

What you can't change is the "private messages" part.

To effectively tell subscribers their messages can't be read by non-subscribers and then later change that is a violation of trust that it appears Groups.io doesn't choose to allow.

Received from E Brandler at 6/17/2018 08:48 PM UTC:

In picking a visibility option, why is it that if I choose?

"listed in directory and private messages"

I will not be able to change it back at a future time?
Why is this even an issue?

Re: Question About Format of Digests

Thanks, Shal, I figured as much.? Appreciate the logic, I will explain to our list member.? I think it always helps to understand the logic behind an action.

Re: Mute a hashtag? #hashtags

Toby,

yes, in the message footer (via email), on the web interface:
Thanks for the excellent reply. I hadn't noticed that hashtags shown on the web were now drop-menus. Oh, but only when you open them, not in the list. We still seem to lack a way to mute/follow topics from a group's Messages section.

And oops. The fact that one can mute those from the group's Messages on the web is missing from the help page. Care to add that to our mock-up? And a screen shot for the footer too, while you're at it.

Re: Mute a hashtag? #hashtags

Dan,

Is there a way for a member to mute (hide? unfollow?) an entire
hashtag?
Yes.

"Mute" is the correct word in Groups.io, for members who otherwise receive all messages. "Unfollow" has a different meaning, for members who chose "Following only" as their Message Selection.

Messages with a hashtag contain a link in the footer to Mute that hashtag. Or one can mute them through the groups.io home page. /static/help#muting

What I'm looking for is a way for them to just say "mute hashtag
#Lightroom" (say as a button on each hashtag on the hashtag page) ...
Adding Mute and Follow functions to each group's Hashtags page sounds like a great idea to drop into the "suggestion box" (beta):

We'd still want those messages to appear in the web interface, just
not be delivered via email (individual or summary).
I think you mean "individual or digest". Muted topics and hashtags are omitted from them. I'm not sure about the summary, I think it ignores Mute/Follow and simply lists all topics.
