This is not always the case, I am afraid. I have gone through all the steps and sent an invite to transfer@ several days ago (my YG group activity log confirms that the invite was correctly sent out), but it has not been accepted so far.

I suppose you could characterize it that way and by now it may already being documented that way, but it certainly isn't what I would consider an expected behavior. This certainly bewildered me when I first came across this behavior and I see many more bringing it up here.

I feel I should not have to make my profile public just to view a public profile. So, to me and many others, the Directory is useless. Well, not entirely, as I could also sign up with a "disposable" account to view the Directory.

Hi

I can¡¯t parse out the problem, but you might check out the wiki which talks about directory vs members¡¯ list.

#directory #directory

I am a new manager, and I am hoping someone can answer a question for me.

A member of my group chose the following profile privacy setting:
Subscription>Group Profile>Edit Group Profile>Profile Privacy>Only group owners & moderators

Then the member tried to view the Directory, and was unable to do so. Instead, she got the following message:
This member directory is only visible to members of your group. In order to view the member directory, you must change your to either Other Members of Your Group, or to Public.

I would think that the member's privacy setting choice would prevent other members from seeing her profile in the Directory. But why would that privacy setting prevent her from seeing the Directory entirely?

FYI - when the member switches the profile privacy setting back to this
Subscription>Group Profile>Edit Group Profile>Profile Privacy>Other members of your group.
then the Directory is viewable again

Thanks so much
Deb

Inviting new members to calendar events

Hi, I've been using for a few months now to manage our book club and it's been working really great.

A situation has arisen that I'm not sure how to deal with though. I generally add an event for each meeting to our calendar and send a notification to existing members. I generally like to do that as soon as possible after the last meeting (so I don't forget) but at the moment there is a new member invitation pending so I can't send out the invitation until the new member has accepted. Ideally I would like to set up the event so that the new member will automatically receive the event notification, but I'm pretty sure this isn't possible. A reasonable compromise would be to send the event notification to the existing members, and when the new member joins then manually send him the event notification, but I can't see a way of doing this without resending the event notification to all members. Does anyone have a good workaround?

Thanks,

james

You might want to check with her regarding optimum group settings for this purpose.

The boxed message will not appear in your group(s). It's on the transfer status page.

If you haven't logged in, do so (see?/static/help#password)
Go to the transfer page at??/yahootransfer
Scroll down to the very bottom.
Look for the "in-process" box at lower right and click in it. A list of groups being transferred should appear.
Select one of your groups.
At the top of the resulting page, look for the boxed message that I mentioned earlier.

If you see the message, all you can do is wait. If that message does not appear, then you must have skipped a step somewhere.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Folks have used both methods.? Having the transfer agent handle everything seems to cause the fewest problems.? When the members get the email notice that they've been added to the new group, it conveniently includes a link for them to unsubscribe.? I've only heard of a very few that got irate about things.? There have also been some that became active in the group again because of the increased reliability.

Bonnie,

I think Hooty doesn't realize that changing the subject line on a reply starts a new thread/topic and can be confusing as you mentioned.? I'd suggest that the addition become the first line in the reply, not on the subject line.? In an effort to consolidate this topic, I've merged the threads.

Re: GROUP SETTINGS OPTION ¨C Automatic Post Removal After a Period of Time . . .

Yes, the beta group is the official suggestion box for the site.? I'm not sure how 'easy' it would be to do, but you might suggest that the options be done somewhat like the calendar events.? Those can be set to week/month/etc, then there's an option to select how many of those units.

At this time, it seems the longest wait in the process is for the transfer agent to accept your invitation. Go to the transfer page at?/yahootransfer?and select your group name from the "in-process" pull-down menu. Chances are, there's a boxed message at the top saying "We've received the invite to your group and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite."?If so, I suggest you heed that message and wait your turn in the queue.

Once you get the "ready" message (it will arrive to [email protected]), make the agent a Moderator and return to this page to actually get things going (Steps 3 and 4), the transfer should proceed within 24-48 hours.

Hope this helps,

Re: GROUP SETTINGS OPTION ¨C Automatic Post Removal After a Period of Time . . .

Duane,

Thanx... Your answers are always helpful and much appreciated.

So . . . I just went and looked at the 'create hashtag' option over on our G.IO site and see all the time/duration options. That's a nice timesaver for our moderators.

But it would be nice to see a two month option for the duration of posts. We feel that is a sensible amount of time for a member's ad wanting to sell or their house or their car, etc. to remain up. After that time it's most likely either sold (or not), rented (or no interest), or just plain stale, as ads go. And two months seems a more reasonable amount of time for a free ad with an exposure to so many members to remain in place before removal. And especially so for a large-ticket item like a member's house, car, or property.

BTW, a Classified area could be useful for many groups but we eventually found a real need to restrict what had become an overwhelming number of commercial ads but we chose to continue to allow personal ads by our members. This seems to have work quite well for us.

So, who would I make a suggestion to for a two-month option? To Beta? Or . . . ?

The transfer agent normally moves the subscribers first. Then as each file/photo is moved, its ownership is compared to the people found in the GIO group's member's list. If no corresponding subscriber is found, ownership defaults to the group owner (you).

This does not apply to the message archive.

What this means for you:? If you want photo and file ownership to be retained in the transfer, you either have to let the transfer agent move them, or find some way to subscribe all the "active" subscribers to the GIO group ahead of time, using the same email addresses they are currently using in the Yahoo group.?

My original advice (to just let the agent move everybody and remove the inactive people afterward) stands. I really think you'll have less of a mess to clean up that way.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
