Re: Yahoo might be dead - transfer questions

I just had a 1000+ member group transferred in less than two days this week.

Re: Que ?

That's a pool cue, not que which is a word in other languages but not English.?

Jim B.,

Yep did all of that but still no joy! Maybe the process is broken.

Re: messages by topic

members don't pay attention to the subject and send info that is unrelated to the topic. Can the conversation grouping be disabled? I.E. can each message show independently? I cannot find out how. ==baxter, owner of 2 groups

I understand display names, and, as owner/moderator, have modified a few after the move from Y!. But I do not understand User Name. It is not something I can edit, and I haven¡¯t found anywhere that it is displayed or used. It is not set for transferred or new members.

?

Go to any group where you are admin, select Members and click on a name link. At the top of the Membership page is User Name.

Under User Name is says ¡°User name not set. View Profile¡±. This is followed by Display Name, and the displayed name.

?

The same thing appears on your own Group Profile, on any group (I assume). On this group, for example, select Subscription, ?Group Profile, Edit Group Profile. It¡¯s between Profile Photo and Display Name. In my case, it says ¡°Not set¡±. Does it ever say anything else?

?

I assume it¡¯s not important, I¡¯m just curious.

n my group the profile has an entry "User name is not set". What is the significance of that statement?

Each person's account has a "user name" and a "display name." Neither is all that significant for actually participating in GIO, as the email address is the user ID.

If the user creates a profile or fills out the proper fields in their account they have the option of populating a "display name." I believe that if they post to the group, sometimes a display name is also taken from their message header and populated automatically.

What I did in my group was go through all these entries in the Member List and populate these names for them, just so I could keep track of what email address goes with what person. For my particular group, this is necessary, as membership in the parent organization is required for membership in the GIO group, and otherwise it's difficult to keep track of who to boot when they let their membership expire. Other group owners consider this a terrible faux pas and a breach of subscriber's "right to internet anonymity" (whatever that means).?What you do with your group is up to you. It IS your group, after all.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Poll

Thanks Toby. I have checked there and nothing appears.?

What happens if starting a poll is not finished? Does it disappear? I am wondering if they did not start the poll correctly and that is why it can not be found.

Have you checked the Polls view?? (Messages (left menu) -> Polls (drop down list under group name where you can select Topics, Messages, Expanded, Polls).? They should be there.

Bonnie,
? Send another invite?? (I think the invites 'expire' after 2 or 3 days.)? Keep
checking to see if they have joined - and upgrade the transfer.io to
moderator status as soon as possible.? Then go back to Easy Transfer
and do the "do it now" (sic) thing.

Re: deleting Photos

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Shal, the reason that I don¡¯t want ALL old attachments deleted is that mine is a Photoshop group and several times a week I send in a tutorial with a sample. I want to keep those samples associated with the emails for when a new member may want to search the archives for a particular technique.
When the members do that tutorial, they send in their own sample. We don¡¯t need those samples after a certain time, but we do need the original sample with its email.
So I need to do ¡°selective¡± deleting. One thing that is making it difficult is that sometimes members will reply and include the original message and sample in their reply.
I have checked out the link you provided and none of the suggestions exactly fit what I need... the idea of consolidate (1b) has merit, but how to I make sure that the original sample is the one retained... at the moment I am having to click on a photo, see who sent it, then do the appropriate action... delete or keep... tedious, but accurate... it looks like that is the only way at the moment.
I¡¯m working on an explanation and instructions for my group, hopefully when they read them they will take it to heart.
Thanks for your reply though.

Win,

I¡¯ve started deleting photos from a couple of months ago which were inserted images (oh how I wish I could select several at a time and bulk delete... lol).
?
Other than cluttering up the Emailed Photos album, is there a reason to bother deleting them?

An alternative is in the Message Formatting section of your group's settings: Delete Old Attachments when out of space, and then just let the site deal with them:

For what it is worth, some ideas to make it easier to delete or consolidate these repeat photos have been discussed in beta.

Re: Inviting a new member to my group

Open the "Admin" menu on the left of the screen, select "Invite".? In the "Emails" box you can enter one or more email addresses, then click "Send Invitations" at the bottom.? You must be logged in with your owner or moderator account to do this.

Are you sure they weren't? A moderator of the group could have edited them.

If they were edited there will be more than just an Edited flag, there will also be a revision history of who and when.
In my experience if you (as a Moderator) edit someone else's message, that subscriber should have also received a notification saying so.?

I've run into this while deleting old message attachments...in some circumstances the deletion is considered an "edit" by the system, even when I didn't change any of the text.

Re: Yahoo might be dead - transfer questions

Hmmmm,
? I've been involved in several transfers in the past 3 weeks - none of them
took more than a couple of days.? These were all small groups of under a
hundred members and small amounts of messages, files, etc.
? If you are having trouble or delays ... perhaps you haven't done some
thing or other that is necessary?? If your transfer has been accepted
but not started the key items I know are to make transfer.io a moderator
and -then- to give the go ahead.??

The email alias is not for the purpose of obfuscation. In fact, only the sender will ever know that the alias was used. The emails sent out to group members will contain the posting member's subscription address, not the alias.

The reason has to do with the original purpose of the feature: to cope with email systems where the outgoing address differs somewhat from the receive address. Those situations are rare now, but still happen with some email services.
Thanks for that clarification, Shal.

Re: Que ?

You wait <grin>.
To check progress:
Go here:?/static/transfer
The following assumes you followed all the steps above.

Scroll to bottom, click on "old" Group type, (Yahoo/Google), scroll to bottom again,
click arrow in the "In Process" box, click on the/a Group to see progress.

Mine shows "Your group has been transferred." YMMV
It also shows what you transfered/copied over. I had selected all boxes, (originally)
Hope this helps.
