Re: Add invitees to event

Thank you Bruce, your answer was very helpful!

I assumed there was a standard way of doing it and I was just missing it. I did end up forwarding a clipped email. I'm new to groups and still learning my way around.

thanks again, Cassandra

Re: Add invitees to event

A lot of it depends on your facts and circumstances.

?

I suspect you are looking for a certain type person to join your meetings and not just anyone.

?

So, you need to think about where those people are and how you can contact them while somehow letting anyone else they may not be allowed or wanted to join.

?

Can others that join your meetings suggest names of others and how to contact them. Does your group have members in other groups that might have people you wish to attend and if so will they mention? to others either individually or get up an announce your group meeting?

?

If you are looking for business people you might consider buying a Chamber of Commerce mailing list and trying to sort through those you get labels for as to who you contact. But depending on the actual person your mailing may not reach your desired person.

?

Needless to say? word of mouth is the best advertising for anything.

?

Without knowing more about the type of person you wish to? contact and the purpose of the group it is difficult for anyone to focus in on what may be best for your situation.

?

When I first started a listserve group back in August 1999 I got off to a bumpy start but kept on going and I did several things to make the group beneficial for those that were members. That encouraged others to suggest their professional acquaintances to join and now I have several groups and a few thousand members while limiting who may join in most of the groups.

?

If somehow you can add more and more value to your meetings those attending will tell others without having you to ask them to do so.

To resend the invitation to the whole group, the best way is to find and open the #cal-invite message (in the message archive) for editing, then click "Save and Send to Group."?
?
If you don't have the original #cal-invite message (e.g.: maybe you never sent one in the first place), you can similarly open the event itself for editing and resend from the calendar ("update group"). This approach is less desirable, because the new notification will say the event has been "updated" despite the fact that you haven't changed anything.
?
There is no convenient way to send a #cal-invite to an individual. You can email them from the Member List, but will have to insert the desired info via cut-and-paste. In the unlikely event that you still have the #cal-invite message saved in your email client, you could also forward that. If you do, be sure to remove the footer links first, because the recipient can use them to do unwelcome things (e.g. unsubscribe you).
?
Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: how to delete a subgroup

Rush, as the owner of the main group you can go to the subgroup¡¯s member listing, choose any member (including yourself), and change their Role from ¡°member¡± to ¡°owner.¡±?

Go to the member list in the subgroup, open a member record there and change the Role:

This is all covered in the Owner's Manual.

Well, the below test seems to contradict what Mark has responded to me in the past about the App (I use iOS) not handling pasted-in images. ?Although the result may not be consistent and down the line an image might disappear into the dreaded broken-image icon.

Re: how to edit front page

Note that if your group setting is to Normalize messages (no font color, style, etc.) and you want stylized text on the Home Page -- simply change your group setting to allow it, make the Home Page edits, and when finished change the message setting back to Normalize.

I am trying to remove a subgroup - the settings page do not have a delete button. Did something change?
Go to your subgroup homepage, then go to Admin, Settings for that subgroup.?
At the bottom right, there is a delete group.
?
JUST be sure that you are in your subgroup, not your main group.?

Re: how to edit front page

Sarah, it is easy to change your photo and icon.
?
You can also change your text on your group home page - also in - Admin, Settings, and then Group Description.
If you wanted to update your description, remember that you can use all the editing tools. And I would urge you not to put too much on the homepage. Remember that you can create Group Guidelines for the sidebar for group members. You can also pin a post or two to the top of the messages list.

how to edit front page

I need to edit my group's front page to reflect major changes made in the group.? In clicking around, I found instructions only for changing the photo, which for some odd reason is a herd of elephants!? Ok, elephants.? What goes below the elephants badly ?needs to be updated, but I cannot find any way to do that.

Edited

[Edit:? Barry, and this is an edit (I inserted another image? ? at the bottom.) ]

[ OP: ]
Barry, you're not ¡°supposed¡± to be able to edit images. ?(There are pros and cons to that but, for better or worse, that's the decision.?
?
What I do is copy/paste my original post into a new message, include the proper image(s), and delete my original. ?It appears to everyone that it is the ssme message and is essentially seamless (except of course for the date.)? ?I make note of the edit ( [Edit:] ) so that everyone understands why the re-send was done.?
?
Using the web interface I have copy/pasted-in an image to edit a post, but that has been haphazard as to the result, AND, I understand that the Apps do not render such pasted images.?
?
Below is a pasted-in image using my PC/web interface to compose this message.

Have been asked whether it is possible to replace a photo/attachment in an existing thread & outside of a private album. That's what I would also suggest, with the addition of after doing that, the mod (or the original poster if allowed) of that message edit the original online-posted message (using the Hamburger-More menu), to delete the erroneous photo attachment, and add a bold sentence in the message body text pointing about the photo being removed because it was the wrong one and the correct photo is in message 12345 further down this thread; the 12345 message number could also be hyperlinked to the permalink of the corrected-photo new message. When saving the edits I would also choose to resend the message to the group if it would be beneficial.

Re: Listing hashtags by frequency

Hi Andy,
Thanks a lot for the script! I tried it, running it on iPad using Pythonista, and it works great! Will try it in other environments (Android 15 on tablet, Windows 11 and Mac OS Sequoia). Minor modifications may be necessary for the various environments, I¡®m curious to see how much. On iPad, only 1 include statement didn¡®t work, and I simply dropped it - didn¡®t do any harm it seems :-)
Your approach, using the groups.io API, is very interesting for me, will dig further into this. I had intended to work without it, using the group export into a json file and processing that, probably just extracting the relevant objects needed (hashtag name and number of topics using it) and writing that to a CSV file, which could then be imported into Excel and sorted there. I¡®ll still try that just out of curiosity.
We certainly don¡®t want to make you run a Python lecture here - there¡®s plenty of info available via Google ¡
Kind regards
Thomas

Sorry for the delay, I've been away for a few days.? As Duane stated in #49258, the API has been updated to allow topic_count to be used as sort parameter.
?
I've attached the following files:
  • a Python script which will list the most used hashtags in descending order
  • a sample of the output from the script showing the hashtags used here in the GroupManagersForum
?
Things to note:
  • I am assuming people either have Python installed, know how to do it or can work it out. Other than a link to , further support is outside the scope of this group.
  • The script is supplied as is and I cannot provide customisations for different members.
  • The script does not make any updates to your group. It is read-only.
  • The script will check for values in environment variables GROUPSIO_EMAIL, GROUPSIO_PASSWORD and GROUPSIO_GROUPNAME. If they do not exist, you will be asked to supply values at run time.
  • Parameter values entered at run time may be echoed in the output log so be careful who you share that with.
  • To list hashtags in a main group, use the first part of the group posting address as the GROUPNAME e.g. GroupManagersForum
  • To list hashtags in a subgroup, use the format maingroupname+subgroupname e.g. beta+app
?
I hope that helps.

Andy

Nivard is correct... you can neither add nor replace attachments in an existing message. You can, however, delete them.
?
If the attachment is something group members will refer to frequently (maybe it's in a pinned topic?), I suggest you upload it somewhere else (perhaps the Files area) and edit the message to provide a link to that location.
?
Advantage: If someone has the message bookmarked, their bookmark will still work.
Disadvantage: If you do place it in Files they'll have to log in, so it won't work to share anything with non-members.
?
Just another option,
Bruce
