Re: rejecting a request to join

Brenda,

Be aware that anyone who is removed, banned, etc., can get a new email address
and attempt to join under the new address. Depending on how you handle the new
membership process, you may not even be aware of them joining under a different
address.

I had one member who wasn't adhering to our rule about foul language. I banned
the member's email. He joined under a different account, but he is now behaving,
so it accomplished the desired result in the end. I know he did that because of
his writing style, his never quoting anything from a post he is replying to,
etc., but I figured he's learned a lesson and hasn't broken any rules since he
joined again. I could have banned his new address, and kept doing the
whack-a-mole thing, but all that really matters is that he's using appropriate
language now.

Re: #membership a question regarding email address removal #membership

My answers are by the questions you asked.

?

  1. Is there at least one other owner besides this non-active email address that you wish to remove? A moderator is not good enough. You need to be able to upgrade an email address to owner.?
Answer, the inactive one is not set as an owner anymore, but the active one is.

  2. Can you receive email in that non-active email address? If you can, then you can use the Email Me A Link To Log In function.?
    Answer, no I cannot.

?Steph,?

A question - Is there at least one other owner besides this non-active email address that you wish to remove? A moderator is not good enough. You need to be able to upgrade an email address to owner.

Question 2 - Can you receive email in that non-active email address? If you can, then you can use the Email Me A Link To Log In function.?

You can create a new owner
- by promoting another member
- by promoting another of your own email addresses to owner
- by adding another email address for yourself and promoting that to owner. As Joseph mentioned, you need to promote the new email address to owner by logging in with your bouncing email address.

After you have upgraded someone to owner, you can downgrade your other email address to member. You could remove or ban that email address or log into that old account and leave the group if you wish.

/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-moderators-and-additional-owners?single=true

We may be able to give you more help if we understood the issue!

Cheers

Hi Steph, before you can remove an address, you need to make another address owner. To accomplish this, going to the member section of your group, find the other email address that you own. And adjust it from member to owner. Then you can go back and remove the other email address.

You can't remove an email address if that is the only owner.
You say "remove it". I would think you can change it.?
At any rate, subscribing with another email address and making that an owner should work.

Have you set up a Removed Member notice?
See?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-members/removing-members?single=true

The Help says "Removed Member notice
This notice can be sent automatically when a moderator removes a member from the group. To be sent automatically, the notice must be the active notice (set to Active Message). If no Removed Member notice is set to Active Message, none will be sent."
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/removed-member-notice?single=true
?
You can ban the member. That would prevent the person trying to rejoin with the same email address.
Again, you need to create a notice and make it active:
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/banned-member-notice?single=true

Here's the help page on banning and unbanning:
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-members/banning-and-unbanning-members?single=true

If you had removed a member without an active notice, perhaps you should set up a rejected subscription notice:
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/rejected-subscription-notice?single=true
?

rejecting a request to join

We had to remove a member for violating our guidelines repeatedly. This person keeps sending us via group owner a request to join. My question is we receive the request and click the reject link and send. What does the person being rejected get on their end?

Thank you.

Not that I know of.

Interesting to note that GMF had about 47 threads last month and 227 messages in April.
Of course, thread counts aren't an exact science - some people start a new thread as a reply. In GMF, we tend to tidy up and merge threads.

Oddly, there is nothing in Activity. Just checked again.?
Until I replied to the email message from the new email account, there is nothing in Activity (my group is basic).

Then when I replied with a blank email, my subscription request appeared in Activity and in Members - pending.
Then I got my pending subscription message in my email account with my question for would-be members.

So I guess there is no tracking the owner / moderator can see until the applicant responds.

If yes, you should have received an email from Groups.io about the pending subscription.

The prospective member has to accept joining Groups.io account.?
If the applicant hasn't seen the email, suggest looking in spam.

Then after that happens, you go to Admin, Members. You should see the person in Pending.

No one here can change the manuals. No Management! You can make suggestions in?

And in Settings, Spam Control, that's where you as a group owner ?makes the choice.
New Members Moderated - check box
Messages from new members require approval
Unmoderate After - put in number
Automatically unmoderate new members after N consecutive approved messages.

I think it could (should?) read:?

Unmoderate After
?
After you select the New Members Moderate checkbox, the Unmoderate After list appears. Select an option from the list to specify whether new members automatically are no longer moderated after they send one approved message or after they send two, three, or four consecutive approved messages.

Or you can select Not enabled (which is at the top of the list of number of messages - the Unmoderate After list) to keep new members moderated until you decide to unmoderate them manually (see Managing members).
