Handling archives

Hi there,

I own a group that does not require the use of an archive.? We use the group to each others email clients, which in turn, allow individual users to save posts or threads as they see fit.? Is there a way to turn the archive facility off?

Thanks,

Increase my chance of "Files" transfer success? #transfer

Assuming that the groups transfer process gets going again, I'm curious if there's anything that I can do to maximize the possibility that our "Files" repository makes the trip.? I saw at least one post suggesting that putting all of the files in the top level (i.e. directly in "Files") was the way to go. We make use of lots of sub-folders (sometimes several levels deep), so moving our files around could prove to be painful if it isn't likely to help.? Can anyone who knows better than I do offer any words of wisdom?

Also, does anyone know if a "do-over" of the "Files" transfer can be attempted later if the original attempt fails?

No email bouncers

In one of my groups I have about 220 bouncers who all have the 'no email' option.

This seems rather odd to me. If they don't have posts delivered via email at all, what does it mean for them to be bouncing?

Re: Closing chats - moderators? #Discussion

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thanks for the follow-up.

I will reinforce the message with Mark with the understanding that there are other priorities at the moment.

As far as our group is concerned, I would like for regular subscribers to be able to edit and close a chat that they have opened, should they be given the permission to do so. (I would prefer that deleting be under moderator/owner¡¯s ?control, but since subscribers can delete their posts, the same would presumably apply to chats).

Found the post on Beta.

Mark got back to me on this... as you can image he's rather crunched. Here's how it works:
The statement about who can OPEN chats is correct - it is only opening a chat.
In order for a moderator to be able to perform any other management functions on a chat that has been opened, that moderator must also have been given "Edit Archives" permission. If that is granted, then a chat may be closed, reopened or deleted. Otherwise, an owner must manage an open chat.

Mark did also include in his note back to me that "perhaps I should change this"....
I replied that I believed that it would be a good and welcomed change. In many groups chats serve entirely different purposes than email posts. Many groups do not allow editing of archives for reasons ranging from courtesy to legal. Having to allow that editing in order for a moderator to manage a chat is not something that works in many groups.

I think - hope - that Mark sees this (he was very open in our posts) - but some support about it might be helpful (once he's out from under the Yahoo mess, which could be a while...). There is a post in Beta about it...

In the past Mark helped with this, transferring over groups, could be worth asking?

?

Or simply creat a ggroup and give the new sub link to your yahoo group and let the members sub themselves?

Scott, so far as I can tell, nothing from Yahoo Groups is being distributed via Email, nor posted to a Groups webpage of Conversations.? For some normally quite busy groups, since even earlier than 8pm CST yesterday.?

I don't think it's anything to do with you notifying about replacements at Groups.Io.? Over the weekend, the escalating, widening errors and failures and nonsense that I was seeing mirrored *exactly *the pattern which immediately preceded each of the last two major outages.? It makes me worried about trying to execute a transfer to Groups.io when so many aspects of any YG are consistently inaccessible.

Early yesterday I alerted Verizon/Oath/Pizza Hut/Toys R Us Concierge Care about the return of that pattern of escalating, widening errors and failures...? and later got a reply saying oh no, it's all good, they'd already fixed those problems last week - and I should try clearing out my cache.

No sooner had I read that reply this morning then I noticed Groups is once again "tits up."?

Next, "the engineers" will be suggesting I reboot my modem, or upgrade to Windows '95.? -simon

Scott,

Nothing distributed from Yahoo Groups since 8:14pm CST on 1-29-2018 as far as I can tell.

Yesterday a member of Y!GMF complained that no email was going through her groups, but that posting via the site still worked. I replied by email, received the pending notice by email, and approved by email and that all worked. However, there's been no activity since. So...

Hm... A test post by email hasn't come through yet, but it is only a few minutes so far.

Notably the web interface seems to be responding much more quickly than had been the case.

Re: Directroy

Hi Leroy,

I'm new to groups.io but over in recently moved from yahoo group I"ve been encouraging members to use the Directory to

1-upload their photo

2-add their person blog info or web site info

3-tell a little about themselves

And we are enjoying it.

I just wanted to share.

Re: Transfer

Tim,

Ken, thanks, but no, I used the groups.io /_INVITE_/ function - it has
nothing to do with YG.
There's your problem.

You're supposed to Invite the transfer agent to your Y!Group. It doesn't need to be a member of your Groups.io group. But it does need moderator privilege in your Y!Group.

Re: Bouncing Members

Ruthie,

When checking the email history of the bouncing member, & seeing that
recent messages have been successfully delivered, how can I reactivate
this member as a regular member?
I don't think you can directly reactivate them. But you can send a "bounce probe" - a notice to the member which will remove them from bouncing (blue or red) status if the member responds to the notice. Use the Actions menu at the bottom of the list, or click on the member's row and click on the button at the bottom of their page.

That said, the system is designed so that you generally don't need to do anything about these members - reactivating them is automatic, if they respond at all to the automatic bounce probes, and removing them is completely optional.

Also at what point should i consider a member ¡°dead¡±, after multiple
bounce probes & no change with their email delivery?
Yes, as J said, that's what the change from blue to red B status signifies: Groups.io has exhausted its attempts to get a response from the member.

One advantage of sending a message direct from your email, as Paul suggested, is that a direct message may be less likely to land in the member's Spam folder. But I understand with that many members bouncing why you find that impractical.

With a group of that size I think I would either:

1) Ignore bouncing members unless one asks for help. Then send them a bounce probe and also send a message from my email telling them to go look for the probe notice.

Or

2) Simply remove all members that have gone to red status.

Myself I generally choose (1) because I see no need for me to spend any extra effort on dead email addresses.

If your YG list won't invite [email protected] to be a member,? then it is a YG thing, To prevent an exodus?

Since groups.io has temporarily halted YG list transfers, then It may be that groups.io does not want transfer at groups.io
to join any more YG lists.

Consider trying PG Offline - Download Yahoo Groups, Messages, Files and Photos. to save what you can.
???????????????????????????????????????????

I suspect you might be able to get partial backups at least;? it seems the problem is with YG files being corrupted
which will stop typical copy and verify backups.

Re: Directroy

Leroy,

If the members email address could be added to the Directory,
useless could become helpful!
If you want members to be able to look up each other's email address, make the Members list itself visible to members. That's the Members Visible option in the Privacy section of the group's Settings page.

I don't have that situation, but perhaps this is the answer: in a premium group approving a pending membership also confirms the email address:
