Re: What action is required by members after the transfer?
Secretary
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Shal,This is what our Director received: Hello, Here is a link to log into your Groups.io account: It will expire in 60 minutes, on 01/22/2018 at 11:29pm GMT, but you'll stay logged in for 30 days, unless and until you log out. If you did not ask for a login link to be sent to you, please ignore this email. Cheers, The Groups.io Team They would have had no idea the group was up and running as I'd never told them, so this message must (I assume) have gone out to ALL the new members set up as part of the migration.? There was nothing "user-initiated" about it as they would have no way of knowing that IO was there waiting. So, I think you are saying that everyone will now need to log on to /login, then type their old YG e-mail address then either? "Forget your password" or "Email me a link to log in" to access member-only areas like Wiki. Thanks. On 23/01/18 11:33, Shal Farley wrote:

Matty,
Is there a fallback option - i.e. if you don't click the link withinAs mentioned to Secretary, the timed link is only sent in response to a user action, and is only associated with logging in to the web site. If the link times out, just request another on the Log In screen. Shal |
Re: What action is required by members after the transfer?
Secretary,
However, the message received, presumably by all members (I hadThat message should not have resulted from the transfer, per se. That sounds like the "Forget your password" or "Email me a link to log in" message. Which is always user-initiated, so the user should be prepared and ready to receive the message. What I don't understand is what I need to do next to get the guysFor receiving and posting group messages by email, nothing. They are good to go once copied in by the transfer agent. To access members-only areas of the group web site they need to log in. To do that the first time they can use the Log In page and select either "Forget your password" or "Email me a link to log in". They will need to enter their email address (the one copied over from the Y!Group), receive the message, and use the link in it within the allotted time. Shal |
Re: What action is required by members after the transfer?
You are confusing a couple of things. Firstly you and your members need
to do absolutely nothing, after the transfer they receive an email telling they have been transferred - there is a link to click in that email if they do NOT want to be in the new group, there is no time limit on that link. I think what you are talking about is the first time they visit the group they are asked to set up a password - they will then be emailed a link to enable that and that link is valid from one hour only from the time they click it. If they decide not to set up a password they will still be members but won't be able to access the group via the web, only email. Hi One of our Groups is in the process of being transferred and I was really concerned to see this issue raised. We are also in the UK.Is there a fallback option - i.e. if you don't click the link within its lifetime, do you turn into a pumpkin or do you have an option to request access or something? thanksMatty Smith Skype: mattysmith769 ? mobile: +44 (0) 7590 479192 |
What action is required by members after the transfer?
Secretary
My (small but perfectly formed) group has been transferred.? Many, many thanks to Mark.
However, the message received, presumably by all members (I had already joined as a tester so didn't get a message), asked them to click on a link in the next 60 minutes.? This was daytime USA, but just before midnight in the UK, so the probability of any/many clicking on the link in time is approaching zero. What I don't understand is what I need to do next to get the guys fully active.? Advice would be much appreciated as we have our first event of the year - a repertoire whole weekend away - this coming weekend! Thanks in anticipation. |

While I attempting transfer of my largest group (almost 1800); (Transfer requested but no action yet) I have been suggesting similar moves for nine other groups. A couple are so dormant that YG could be down for a week and no one would notice. Four members quit in protest when I told the group I had requested a files transfer. They lit into me with parting comments about being alarmist, really aggravated than YG would not let them unsubscribe; after trying multiple times. YG sent me multiple (upto six) un-subscription notices for each one. Later I was able to manually remove their memberships. They blamed me because YG was non-functional, citing my desire to move the group as the reason for their YG problems. I have tried to help other groups that I value, in one case setting up a shadow group in groups.io with the same name. Their reply is that they have been with YG for 18 years and they will consider moving only when YG shuts down. They don't seem to realize that will be to late. Poll the members of your 'other' groups and give them a choice of outcomes. My groups wanted the database files and photos preserved. Automatic membership came in second. 25% were willing to ride YG into the dust until it dies without saving the database. About 15% did not want to take any action, even planning to develop a group on another host. It's like watching a ship wreck and blaming the launching of lifeboats for sinking the ship. I do need to consider how I can move photos and files (where new photos can be added now that YG's photo function seldom works. If I can move some of those, then I can tell YG group members that they can start a new in groups.io group. With some YG list owners and moderators, it's like herding cats. This was discussed on here recently. The solution is not to mark
messages as spam or train her ISP not to do it in the first place. It is not groups.io problem, they are just doing what they are told. J,
I was trying to help another cats group by suggesting that they moveAnd you're surprised by this? I don't know whether you made your suggestion on-list or privately to the group admins, and I don't know the culture of this group and its members, but if on-list I'm almost surprised you're not banned for being off-topic and disruptive. I was sort of trying to sell them on a "the sky is falling" scenarioEven if your suggestion was made privately I can understand their hesitance. They're getting conflicting reports about Groups.io and about Yahoo. One thing they may know is that over the years there have been many scares with claims that Yahoo Groups is circling the drain; and that, so far at least, it hasn't gone down. So yes, you may have been seen as just another Chicken Little. You and I may agree that there are some objectively different things about this instance (unsupported, new owner, etc.) but I'm still not surprised that someone might resist what may seem to them to be alarmist information. Re: arrrggghhhh! I don't get it (just a rant)
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýEach owner of a Yahoo Groups group will have to make their own decision on whether to stay or leave, and I can understand not wanting to leave. For me personally I had thought about leaving, but I couldn¡¯t seem to find anywhere that was going to work for me or our members. I didn¡¯t know it though, but a lot of our members were hating where we were. When Yahoo started to fall apart again for me about two weeks ago, I said to myself I really have to do something now. While reading the help forums at Yahoo trying to figure out what was going on, and trying to get some answers, I found a few people talk about Groups.io. That prompted to investigate Groups.io to see what I could find out, and after making a test group, I decided I was moving our group as soon as possible before Yahoo died. As for me, I think I¡¯ve moving our group just in the nick of time. For the owners of groups that want to stay and hack it out at Yahoo I wish them luck, but I think it¡¯s not going to end well for a whole lot of those groups. Our members are already starting to stream over to our new home, and I anticipate most of the rest of them will come over during the transfer¡Which is happening now. I used to like Yahoo before the Neo upgrade, then not so much afterwards, now I¡¯m glad I made the decision to save the group. ? Don ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of J_Catlady ? I was trying to help another cats group by suggesting that they move from yahoo to . I was sort of trying to sell them on a "the sky is falling" scenario and they better move soon, because that's what I've been picking up on lately - that yahoo is getting so bad that Mark is having problems even doing the transfer, that he can't keep up with all the transfers, etc. This is one of the best cats groups and I didn't want to lose them in the downfall of yahoo, and I was honestly trying to help them. ? They more or less jumped down my throat. One accused me of working for . The group owner said they'd been in yahoo since 2002 and while there were "a few problems," nothing is perfect, and it would be better for them to stay. Another said she'd joined a group a couple of years ago and was immediately deluged with spam, but "maybe it's more secure now," she didn't know. A third said she'd joined "eight groups" and found them "less convenient" than yahoo. ? It was crazy. I didn't know how to deal with it without sounding even more like I'm "working for" . Only a couple of people said they'd had problems with their messages not posting on yahoo and they wouldn't mind moving, but overall, the feeling expressed was it was too risky to move, there are problems "everywhere," etc. ? YGroups GMF probs?
Anyone having further problems with GMF on YGroups?
Just went to check it and no messages load but the header and main page say 'No New Messages'. And the Message Page (Archives) there show that the latest posts are on Dec 31st. That was not the case earlier today? Wondering whether Verizon/Oath might've sanctioned some of the discussions or removed them even. Curiouser & Curiouser...! Any thoughts or comments about this. Anita,
Not long ago I went to iogroups here and saw a list of attachments andI wrote: "Seems like a feature that ought to exist." That's convenient, in the sense that you probably want to know how much space they're consuming and how close to the quota you are before you go looking to delete them, but it is evidently not an obvious place to look. I still think a "has attachments" filter in the Messages list would be more obvious. Shal |
