Perhaps e-mail with my group name has a better chance of being read -- because the applicant has already read and responded to auto-send messages containing the group's name.

Why not set up a welcome notice?
See?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/welcome-notice?single=true

You can't send from your owner email through Outlook.
You can send an email to a member with your owner email address through the website.
There has been a discussion about this in that past week.
And see Help -?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/sending-and-receiving-group-owner-email-messages?single=true

Lots of other notices - see /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices?single=true

Moderator e-mail address -- better to use groups.io address than personal address?

Hi folks,.

I've searched for an answer and no luck, so I'll bring it to you!

It involves using my private e-mail address (GinaP56@...), sent through Outlook, to welcome applicants to my group. Is it possible to use the group-owner e-mail instead -- THROUGH my Outlook and not the website?

Backstory:

Thanks for any light you might shed!

Fake member requests

HI all,

I have two groups that are geographically based membership based groups, so it's really clear to me when we are getting join requests from outside that.
Are other groups also starting to see an increase in fake member requests from random aol addresses again that seem to originate from IP addresses in India? Today one of them actually sent a response to the automatic pending subscription member notice with a "thank u." (But no response to the actual member questions) Are we supposed to send these on to Mark or do we just ban them for now?

Thanks!
Linda

Over 20 and it will be "reviewed." We don't know what this review entails, but it's usually completed within an hour or two, at which point all of them will go out.

Should I break up the invites over time or just pull the trigger on it?
The standard advice is to send them all at once. Breaking them up will only incur additional delays.

Bruce

Re: New Follow/Unfollow/Mute/Unmute button on main topics page

For group owners, there already exists a page to do bulk actions at the topic level. It was never added to the menu system because it's just a little too powerful. This strikes me as a parallel to that, but now you're opening it up to subscribers...who know even less about the system than owners do.?

All that aside, it just seems to me that you cannot know that you want to block further messages in a topic without taking a look at the existing ones.

Bruce

Re: New Follow/Unfollow/Mute/Unmute button on main topics page

But they struggle with the mute option now ;-)

Personally I can't see the point of another option but thats just my own opinion, others I am sure will have different opinions

Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

Exactly.
As an owner/moderator I read and check every single topic, of course. I was thinking from the point of view of a group member.
I should have been more accurate in my original message.
I think that for a group member it would be easier to go to the main topics page and just click away the topics he/she is not interested in.
I can understand that this "click away" would cost Mark many more clicks and efforts, though, so I am not making a fuss about it. Still, I think it would be a good idea (blame it on my stubborn head :-)
Cheers,
Marina

I can well imagine a group member getting bored with a specific topic
that has been going on for a while. Or maybe all topics on a particular
subject that they're not interested in.
Exactly.

Re: Moderator unable to change to ANNOUNCEMENT ONLY; also unable to post during Announcement Only (done by someone else now)

Janie,

1) This gal is definitely listed as a moderator and has done this for
at least ten years.
Groups.io was founded a bit more than six years ago. So "done this" needs clarification.
/static/about

2) She is using the same email that is attached to her as a moderator.
How do you know this?

Even if she says she is, she should double check what it says in the upper right corner when she clicks or hovers over her name. That will show the address that is currently logged in on the browser she's using.

Also, as Bruce suggested she should verify to you that she has the Mod badge when looking at the group.

3) She CAN approve new members.
If she does so by email that doesn't prove that she's logged in correctly.

Any ideas??
Maybe she's trying to control a different group.

But the primary idea is that she's logged in using a different address than the one which is a moderator of the group.

This is a clue:

[she can't] 1) Find the setting that always allowed her to set the
group to Announcement Only (with mods still being able to post)
You should follow that up with her - can she see the group's Settings page? Can she see any of the Admin collection of pages?

If no to the above then she is not logged in to the correct account. If yes to the above then look into her moderator permissions.

AS A SUMMARY:
Re-read carefully the advice you've been given. Question your assumptions, try to gather and present evidence. If necessary have her send you screen shots showing exactly what she does and does not see.

Re: Temporary Owner

While you're sticking around to help the new owner(s), you can change
your email address for the account.

Leave the group when you feel the owner(s) no longer need training
wheels.

You can go to the account tab, and change your email address. Just as a another option.

I have no interest in running this group. My attachment to it is not that strong. I intend to remain as the owner until the new owner or owners know enough to run the group. It is pretty simple to run.

Just change your email address for the group on your Accounts page. (top right corner of the Group homepage.

Re: Slack synchronization, possible account change, basic plan #slack #service-sync #owner #pricing

Bruce:

I logged out of the Slack sync with my personal email address and I was able to log in to the Slack service-sync with the club email alias. The club email alias is just another email address; this email address is now the owner of groups.io, the primary owner of the Slack group, and now is the account used for the Slack service-sync the membership lists. Everything is great. Thank you very much.

Best regards, Brent

Re: New Follow/Unfollow/Mute/Unmute button on main topics page

I admit to being a tad confused on this subject

We are primarily group owners yes?

So why would we want to mute or ignore any thread in our groups?

I have yet to see a thread I would want to mute as a group owner

Subscribers seem to struggle to understand the ability to mute a thread as it is so anything more complex seems more like gilding the lily than anything useful

Maybe I am missing something?

Brent -- The system help does not list Slack integration as something restricted to paid groups; and a suggests that it never was. I have several groups created after August 24 and even they have an active Service Sync button. That said, I have not actually tried to use it.

I don't know what you mean by a "club email alias." Is the address capable of receiving and responding to messages sent from groups.io? If not, any problems you encounter will probably stem from that.

Hope this helps,

If the original poster wants to offer it as a suggestion in Beta, I
will reply to it. I don't see me using it often enough to take the
lead in this.
