Re: Chronic:: Messages not being delivered.

Chris,

There is a lot of talk about a change from POP3 to IMAP being "better"
but given that that could be rather tedious I am unwilling to set
about it unless I can be certain that some sort of betterment will
arise.
I resisted IMAP for quite a while, mostly because Eudora Pro updates went away before they'd really gotten IMAP to work well. When I switched to Thunderbird I initially kept my email delivery set to POP, but I've since become a convert to IMAP, and will attest that it takes a change of point of view, but it isn't any more tedious on a day-to-day basis (and for some issues, like access to a provider's spam folder, considerably less tedious).

It will help with the spam filtering if you can set up the filter on the provider's webmail interface. The messages moved from Spam to INBOX will then download by POP like any others.

But no, it won't help for delays or actual rejections.

Re: Not moderating 1st post

Wayne,

As best I can tell, default is that first post must be moderated.
Can I turn that off?
It appears I must check one of the boxes?
As Frances said, you can't turn that off without turning at least one other one.

Not restricted.
Then the simplest thing to do is simply approve members' messages as they arrive in Pending.

It won't take long before the most active members have all had their 1st post approved, at which point it will become increasingly rare that you have to approve another.

You don't have to do any extra work beyond that 1st approval for members that post. In many groups the majority of members "lurk" without posting, those members won't take any work at all until and unless they decide to post.

They both say to "Save" or "Keep" messages marked as Spam,
but conflict as to whether to "Enable Spam filtering" or not.

My experience is that Comcast's Spam filtering should not be enabled, and messages marked as Spam should be kept.

Comcast is my provider, and I use Apple Mail.
I have Comcast/XFinity set to "Keep" and have "Enable Spam filtering" unchecked as Mark's 2018-01-09 beta message recommends.

I haven't 'missed' Groups.io messages from any of the groups I own via Comcast
(I checked my Email Delivery History logs - I also receive them at a least one other email address from different providers)

Some 2019-07-28 & 29 beta & GMF messages were throttled, but delivered.

However 2 GMF messages (Jan 13 & Jan 23) did bounce mx2.comcast.net: 550 5.1.0 Invalid sender domain

Re: bouncing (again) .... and again

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

My bounces aren't working that way.? During the conversion from Yahoo to groups.io, 5 of my group's addresses were converted to name@... instead of the actual email addresses, hence the big B.? I was able to edit one of the 5 by using her bounce message (she was getting the bounce message on her actual address) link to fix it but I don't have direct access to the olther four.? Is there a less than obvious method for me to modify the incorrectly-xlated email addresses to what they really are and then fix the bounce blocks so I can finally release this group for public use after four months?

The three day cadence is consistent with Groups.io's bouncing mechanism, when in the "bouncing" (blue B) status. It will give up after the fifth such message, then you'd be in the "bounced" (red B) status.

That shouldn't be the case, in either bouncing or bounced status. Is it possible the group messages are coming through a different email address (that is, is it possible you have two accounts at Groups.io, one bouncing one not)? Check the email address in the footer (near the Unsubscribe link) of any message you receive from the group and compare that to the address which received the bouncing notices.

That link might take you to the bounces page of whatever account (email address) you are currently logged in with, which might not be the address which is bouncing, if you have more than one email address registered at Groups.io. Note that the address which is bouncing might not be subscribed to the same groups as the address which isn't.

It can depend on his email service.? Gmail is "very helpful" in not showing returned messages by default.? There are other services that take it upon themselves to restrict delivery from GIO now and then.? If you can share his service, someone may be able to contribute more.

This group (or Group_Help) is about as close as you'll get to 'quick' assistance.? [email protected] is only for paid groups (and even that can take awhile) and there is no phone number to call.

Another 'better' solution:

Disable Spam Filtering altogether. This works!

You have inadvertently touched on a sore point there. When the group I co - own migrated from Yahoo towards the end of 2017 my ISP (and mail provider) British Telecom had an annoying habit of shunting quite a bit of Groups.io traffic into my spam box, which meant that it didn't upload into Outlook. (And yes, I am running on a rather elderly version, but that's another story.)

The obvious solution was to do exactly what you have suggested, and that worked well until last weekend. BT has changed its webmail design / appearance / functionality and that switched spam filtering back on, but this time without providing the end user the capability of switching it off again. At that point everything from Groups.io has been branded as spam, much to my annoyance.

I will check BT's so - called help pages again but as far as I can see there is no workaround for this at all. There is a lot of talk about a change from POP3 to IMAP being "better" but given that that could be rather tedious I am unwilling to set about it unless I can be certain that some sort of betterment will arise.

I am putting off trying to contact BT because I know from past experience that the whole process is more stressful than I care to incur.

Having got that off my chest there is some evidence emerging that emails from Groups.io are on occasions "missing"; they neither turn up anywhere nor get listed as bounced in my Email Delivery History.

ODTAA, as someone once said.

Problem with member posting #messages

b&p

I have an active member who is having difficulty with sending and receiving posts to our group of friends, for whom groups.io is our main form of continuity in communication. He has unsubscribed and re-subscribed more than once, both on his own and with the help of the two co-moderators, and also re-subscribed with a new e-mail address. We are receiving his group posts, but he is not, My co-moderator and I are at a loss to help him further and think the problem may be on his own computer. Neither of us are tech savvy enough to be of further help.

Is there a phone number, a chat room or other means by which he can get assistance quickly? (We are in the US on Eastern Time.) He is a prolific and important contributor. Please feel free to reply to this or directly off-list as my own e-mail, bsandpp@....?
Thanks,
Paul

You can export the messages in mbox format. See the "export group data" button at the top of your Settings page. After opening the resulting file in a compatible mail client (e.g.: Apple Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird), you can then print the messages to a PDF document and put that in the target group's files area. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io#Uploading-a-message-archive?for some slightly outdated information about this.

I did that for several groups that I wanted to help migrate from Yahoo but whose owners were unwilling to give me sufficient permissions to do it the "right" way. It was okay for archival purposes (I guess), but in practice no one seems to have subsequently bothered to download those files, much less use them for anything.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

If you're not deleting the second group, you could use the hyperlinks on messages (or topics) to post links to them.? People would need to be members of that group to access them unless you have public archives.? May be more trouble than it's worth though.

In a word, No.? There's no merging (or splitting) of (sub)groups on GIO that can be done programmatically.? You'd have to do everything manually.? It's been suggested before (check on the ), but either isn't a high priority or won't be done.
