I wonder if he is stuck with a cached page...

Get him to go to the Member List and then refresh the display.

What are the issues we may face with Direct Adding members? #direct

Hi,
We're exploring groups.io to transfer our 1300 strong subscriber list, and I see that there has been a limit imposed on the number of direct adds before you have to wait for approval. Is there a place with more info on the Direct Add process on the whole? If not, I have a few questions...

  1. How many can I add in one go?
  2. Do members remain if I downgrade the Group to the free plan?
  3. Is it correct for me to assume that directly added members will be able to receive and reply to mail via their email clients without needing a groups.io account?
Many thanks!

Re: How to send GroupOwner+ messages #howto #groupowner

I had to check the variables with my test group. The result is that there is no simple method to do this.

A Special Notice is from the Owner but the reply is to the group. The From line structure is:
? ? [Group Name]@groups.io on behalf of [Owner or Moderator] via Groups.io <[Group Name]+owner@...>

The only current way to do this would be to visit your Members page under Admin, scroll all the way to the bottom so that all members show on the page (assuming you still have the default Infinite Scroll in your preferences), then go back to the top, check the checkbox next to Display Name and then choose Action -> Send Message.

That will definitely send the message to each individual with the From line showing:
? ? [Group Name][email protected]

Even so, I'm not sure why you would choose to do this rather than simply posting to the group. Depending on your member count, you would invite a potential onslaught of messages that could last for weeks.

Re: Moderator can't View Member List #moderators

Thank you both Bruce and Thomas.? I had him look at his settings and log in and he does state that he has the blue "mod" badge, but he still can't view the member list:

I have had the "Mod" blue block next to my "Home" button for a while.

I logged out, logged back in, still have the "Mod".

I went to one of the old requests <sinp> and am still getting the "You do not have permission to access that page." notification when I select "View Pending Member from the email notification that she applied to join the group.

Re: #email #email

Larry,

What mystifies me is how Yahoo somehow never had to do this.
I'm not sure what you mean.

Ronaldo is correct: Yahoo Groups modifies all From addresses to conform with DMARC. It started doing so a few months after first Yahoo Mail then AOL began setting the reject policy in their DMARC record.

Re: #email #email

Ann,

... and cc'd the owner address. In that cc, the From line was, as I
explained, my email name = xxx . com @ groups.io.
So that explains it. Duane had it right.

The copy you received (via the +owner address) was sent to you by Groups.io. And in that case the DMARC rules apply, causing the From address modification in the message you received.

The pending member will receive your message with your original From address, as sent by your email service.

True enough, but in the case that brought it to mind, the deleted post was a post that originated a topic that was totally un-related to the purpose of the group
As you noted, the deleted message has already gone out as emails. Removing it from the message archive cannot change that. If the message content was objectionable, we're closing the barn door after the horse has already gotten out.
I was just thinking about not continuing a thread that was pointless. As I said, this happened in a group I am only a member of.
If you have a one-off need, I suggest you do not delete the post....instead, edit it to remove any objectionable content followed by locking or moderating its topic. If your subscribers are truly unruly, such that this is a persistent problem in need of a software solution, then moderating every post beforehand seems like the best course of action.
Right. If it was my group, I probably would have handled it differently. I guess seeing how other groups are run helps me think about how to run mine. Thanks for your thoughts.

We have members who had temporary email problems but are now OK but they still appear on the bouncing member's list.

If you put it in as a cc, likely the person is replying all.
Why not try BCC'ing your owner address?
Then the person couldn't reply to your BCC Groups.io address.

?I sent a message via my private email in reply to to a pending member and cc'd the owner address.?
Perhaps you are asking for more clarification before you approve them??

My guess now is that if I am sending a message via my private email to someone who is a pending member, then groups.io puts the offending address in the From line.? How they do it, I don't know since I am NOT sending the email through groups.io.
If you put your Groups.io address in your CC line, you are involving Groups.io.
Also if you are copying the person's email address, possibly you are picking up other content / coding. Edit it down so that just a normal email address is in the To field.
I am going to leave this thread alone for now before I wear everyone out.? But before I do, I wanted to clarify some things. Perhaps you can respond, as needed.

1)? When I tried in the past to bcc the owner address, I did not receive the message.? I will test that again.

2) Yes, I do need personal information from pending members because our listserv has a limited criterion for membership, and I need to determine if a pending member fits that and more.? That is why I send personal messages from my email client. I know I can do it through groups,io, but that is not my preference.? I keep boilerplate messages for all occasions.

3)? I no longer copy the address from the Pending Member list, though I do copy and paste it from the notice that I get for member approval from groups.io.? Perhaps that triggers the unwanted address? I don't know.

Thanks in advance to all for your replies.

Completely edit default messages for invites, direct add, etc

Hi again,
Trying to completely change the default message for new members: invite message, direct add message, welcome message. I see that I can customize and insert when I am sending, but that goes away. There also seems to be something in the admin; settings; member notices. But does this change the default? I think the welcome message for the GMF was different from the usual; how did you do that?

You can disable "no mail" but you can't disable others. However you can set a default subscription setting. Members can change it, but likely, many won't bother.

You can also send in your Welcome message just the email commands for the subscriptions you prefer for the group. If it is easy to do, that might nudge users in to the right direction.

I am surprised that you would delete both digests, though.

No, it's just that the CC: went through GIO where a direct email wouldn't.? If she had used CC:to her own address, it wouldn't have happened.? Anything that gets sent to GIO by any means may have that rewritten From: if you get a copy of it back.? It all depends on which email service you have.? The other members getting a message from GIO may not see the same thing unless it's something they sent.
