Chances are it's just rr being rr.? They don't play well with GIO on occasion.? Any error message(s) you got may help narrow the problem area.

The biggest complaint with rr is that people using that service are removed for marking messages as spam, even though they haven't.? See /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Removed-for-spam#Service-Providers

It shouldn't.? I just tested on one of my groups that is text only and the formatting bar has all the tools as long as my account preference is set to html and the window is large enough.

It probably would depend on the size of the email service.? The large ones like Yahoo or Gmail would likely consider it a gnat (annoyance).? A small service might see a few and decide that GIO should be blacklisted.? It would basically be what percentage of a service's users are claiming spam.? And those that just delete the email won't cause any problems.

It sounds to me like you've tried to think through the various possibilities, so unless something strikes you suddenly, I'd go for it.

As I recall Mark made the pragmatic decision to accept the action of the Y!Group mod/owner (in promoting the transfer agent) as proxy for the approval of the membership.

After the fact, any member who objects to having their content at Groups.io can file a "take down" request which Groups.io will honor. The logic of that is based in US copyright law, specifically the DMCA and its safe-harbor provisions for sites that host user-supplied content. Late in the game Mark also implemented a "before the fact" means for the person setting up the transfer to exclude specific members (email addresses) and their content from the transfer.

Shal, what you suggest is unlikely since my Macbook Pro is a 15-incher. The Wiki page is being displayed in the Safari window full screen . And the image is not enlarged unduly. I also checked that possibility by enlarging and shrinking the image in the window by using [ Command + '+' or '-' ]. Also checked by dragging the window larger and smaller. Neither option caused any truncating of the dropped down formatting menu for the Wiki setup.

It still apears to me that our group's setting to 'text only' must be suppressing those text formatting options. Nor does there seem to be any way to change that in my account's Preferences accessed upper right corner under my name. I even checked there, JIC.

Maybe there's something that I'm still missing which does allow adding those text formatting options/buttons for Wiki but so far I haven't found where/how to enable them.

I do have the sticky Wiki page with a photo displayed at the top of the message page and that's the main thing I was after, after all. I can live wth the two black periods flanikng the photo.

I believe I'll get a very poor response rate that way, whereas if I
e-mailed people individually I'm likely to get a much better response.

I could also send mails to people from my own address, but again that
would impact the response rate -- people are more willing to join a
group if it is easier to do so after just a moment's consideration, as
opposed to having to follow a set of instructions to do so.

My concern would be how many would mark an unexpected invitation as spam, possibly causing other problems.
Yes, I'm not sure what happens when that happens.

It is my understanding that current Groups.io users from domain X won't
be affected if an unrelated invited person from that same domain X marks
an invitation as spam.

Legally, each post belongs to the person that made it.
That is true, but my googling got me to several resources on copyright
exceptions for archival purposes, including unpublished works and works
of correspondence for which no publisher has yet claimed ownership.

There are, of course, related rights, e.g. the right to be forgotten,
but such rights are typically enforced by request, i.e. a user formally
requests that his information be removed. If such requests do come in,
it would be easy to just search for all e-mails that mention the user or
that contain the user's e-mail address, and delete those mails (and/or
in cases where such mails contain a lot of useful information from other
posters, simply edit those mails to remove the person's details).

In addition, EU law requires one to inform people of the fact that their information is being held, but I'm not sure whether that applies to archives. But it should not be difficult to send an e-mail to everyone whose e-mail addresses are mentioned in the archives, to tell them that their information is in the archive.

In addition, there is the possibility that someone might request his
mails to be removed for copyright reasons, and that opens a new can of
worms w.r.t. people quoting each other in e-mails, but I'm willing to
err on the side of caution and simply remove all mails that contain any
content (quoted or otherwise) by that person.

However, GIO must have considered that when they did transfers.
It may simply have been a calculated gamble. After all, GIO performed
transfers even if only one of the moderators of the Yahoogroup allowed
it, regardless of whether the owner of the group wanted it.

Re: Avoiding storing attached photos

The Group has a lot of how to do it messages, many requiring a photo.
Sometimes the photos are embedded in a message.
Does that add something to the storage used?

Doing any kind if Moderation greatly increases my administrative workload.
Otherwise, it sounds like what I have been doing is the best way.

When the Group transferred? from Yahoo I set limits on photos and it has helped.
Thanks,
?Richard

It means that when GIO tried to verify the identity of the sending server, it didn't find a Reverse DNS entry for 203.59.1.107.? It might be a temporary condition or the server may be misconfigured.

I think I just did this with a few of my old groups.

Go to this URL:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/YOURGROUPNAME/members/all
and sort by something unchanging, e.g. join date.

Then select some members and click Actions > Change delivery settings > No Email, or Actions > Set posting privileges > Override - can't post messages.

You can't perform these actions on more than about 50 messages at a time (you can select more at a time, but it doesn't apply it to all selected).

There is no easy way to tick the tickboxes (or check the checkboxes) for all members.? I used a little AutoIt script (I use it with Vivaldi browser):

Sleep ("2000")
For $i = 1 to 50
Send ("{SPACE}")
Sleep ("100")
Send ("{TAB 2}")
Sleep ("200")

The ethics of resurrecting dead Yahoogroups groups without permission

Hello everyone

I would like to create a couple of mailing lists (5 or so) to replace some dead Yahoogroups groups that were all related to user support for particular versions of a software product.? Most of those groups still have many users, but there is almost no activity anymore.? The owners of the groups are surprised at the fact that their groups' archives have been deleted (they did not know!), and is now encouraging users to join the product's universal Facebook group.? The owners believe that mailing lists are outdated and that most people want to use Facebook these days, but there has been some negative response to these announcements.

I'm not sure if these groups will become "alive" again when they become Groups.io groups and many of their members join the groups here, but I would like to give people this opportunity, and I would like to make the archives available on Groups.io (in the database section).? It may be that even if many people join these groups, they will become no more than accessible places to search the archives, with little or no actual conversations taking place -- although there are ways to artificially generate interesting, relevant traffic on a list (e.g. news about new releases, etc.) and encourage people to start replying.

I don't have permission from the group owners for any of this, although they know that I'm going to try.? The groups' archives on Yahoogroups were public.

So my question relates to two issues: whether it is okay to invite people who are not expecting to be invited, and whether it is okay to make message archives available without every individual person's permission.

I suppose it could be said that the group owners "own" the archives and that only the group owners can give permission for uploading the archives.? On the other hand, I could take the approach that I simply inform everyone whose e-mail addresses are in the archives about the fact that their e-mails are now hosted here, and give them the opportunity to "opt out" of having their old mails hosted here.? I could further ensure privacy by replacing all e-mail addresses in the archive with special numbered addresses so that the real addresses don't show up in searches but so that I can search for such people's e-mails (for easy deletion of messages)... however, that approach won't remove other identifying information from the archives.

As for inviting members, what do you think?? If I can get a list of all recent and previous members of the old groups, do you think it's acceptable/ethical to send them a once-off invitation via Groups.io, explaining the reason for the group, etc.?? What is Groups.io's attitude to that?? Is it assumed that a person who gets an "invite" will already be expecting the invite?

Thanks
Samuel

Happy New Year and Thanks

Dear Owners and Moderators of GMF,

?

I want to thank you for the enormous job you did, especially in the past few months managing the issues, questions and needs of so many newcomers to groups.io!

It seems to have been a ¡°rock around the clock¡± challenge to all of you, and I really admire your remaining calm and composed in spite of the fact that questions just answered were repeated again and again and new ones seemed to burst upon you by the minute.

?

It must be mentioned that your work here doubtlessly eased to a large extent the task that Mark had to perform in these ¡°rough¡± times and that it was (and is) a valuable accompaniment to his extraordinary performance. I hope you can get some recreation and stay healthy!

?

I wish all of you a happy and peaceful NEW YEAR 2020!
