What I don't like about the "Like" button is that it will get people to stop responding and just hit the button.

Re: yG Privacy Dashboard download

That was exactly the problem.? I was thinking the script, during execution, was checking the status of the user on Groups.io, but realized it is checking the user status as shown in the memberlist.csv file.? I hadn't retrieved a new file, yet.? Once I did that, the problem was resolved.
Thank you. |

Is there a way to force a new user to where they're name into the Display Name section? No.? The site will use any name associated with the email address (as most people do) if it finds one.? If not, it will use the first part of the email address.? As an example, say a user sends email from John Smith <[email protected]>.? The site will initial use John Smith as the display name.? If that weren't included, it would use jsmith@.? Members can always change this later if they want, so it's not good to depend on it. I did a search of the GMF archive for "DFAT", and this thread is the only one that contains "DFAT".? Nor is it defined in the wiki.? So, what is "DFAT"?

There is no available example for these buttons, but something along these lines should work: <form action="mailto:[email protected]?Subject='Joining%20SUBGROUPNAME' " method="GET">

</form> Embed this in your join page. Clicking on the resulting button should open that person's email client with the To: and Subject: lines pre-populated in a message composition window. All they would then have to do is send it. Be sure to escape any spaces you want to insert in your subject line with %20. This is hexidecimal for the space character. Bruce |

Thanks, Bruce! I couldn't find that :) One thing - the option of:?mailto link to the +subscribe? Where is that I thought I saw it on the about pages of groups the (subscribe, unsubscribe) options? I can't find the "example format" Does anyone any?examples of how they are promoting their groups on websites to get individuals to subscribe to their sub-groups??? It would be optimal to do it like regular groups (but alas) I have quite a few sub-groups. Dakotta -- You asked a very similar question a month ago. The answer given at that time can be found at?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/64368701#25015 Bottom line is that a mailto: link to the +subscribe email address is probably your best option for an off-site subscription button to a subgroup. While logged into the parent group, click the Subgroups item on the left-side menu bar. This will list what subgroups are available, and display the corresponding join buttons. Of course, one must join the parent group first. If you want to provide detailed instructions for your subscribers you will have to create that yourself...perhaps via a Member Notice or a Wiki page. Hope this helps, Bruce |

Sorry for including so much detail and then not being able to clearly show exactly what happened in the end.Gerald -- Yeah, I'm not going to attempt to quote any of that, because I really didn't quite follow it! I believe the first problem you may have had was that you entered an address that did not already have a groups.io account. Is that possible? In such a case, the Change Email button does what it says -- changes your email address. That's not an account merge. If so, you could have just accepted the change proposed to you in the first confirmation email, then went through the same process to change it back. The really dangerous part comes in when you enter an email address that you don't have access to (perhaps via a typo). If you were to log out after doing so, I'm not sure how to recover from that. In the past, I thought you could just log back in under the old address, but your experience (and other reports) have suggested otherwise. In one recent case I had to Direct Add someone to one of my Premium groups to help him get his account back, because there was no other way to confirm a bogus email address? (Ref:?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/67932959#26114). Consider also what happens if you accidentally enter someone else's email address. That person will receive your confirmation email, through which they can log in, complete the change/merge, and steal your account...perhaps not your group ownerships (per the "bug" we've been talking about to this point), but everything else. At best, it's not exactly user friendly. At worst, you can really mess things up. Having said all that, if we want people to have this capability at all, these checks and re-logins and such have to be done somehow. It's easy to complain, a lot harder to propose an alternative.?I can't speak for others, but I'm not prepared to do that...yet. Meanwhile, best thing is to suggest that people be really careful, and I believe I already said something to that effect in message #26745. It's not something folks should be playing around with. Promoting Sub Groups
Dakotta Alex
Hi All, What is the best way to promote subgroups? I wanted to create a webpage for sign-up for each subgroup. I realize you can't do 'google or facebook' login for subgroups, so what's the best?way to do this? Also - where are the subscribe and unsubscribe?instructions for each group located? Thanks, Dakotta ![]() |
