Re: Message from Yahoo today #yahoo

I meant downloading them yourself from the site. I think I mentioned
it was possible to have Yahoo provide you with a download link to a
file that has it all combined.

The default would be "type"='new member'.
Yes, you invite someone because you want them to join. Otherwise, it's not really an invitation, but something else.

Other options would include type='reject', type='moderated', and type='ban'.?
It is already possible to ban someone outright. Just go to?/g/GROUPNAME/members?p=,banned?and enter their email address. That address will then show up in the Banned list.

I don't get the "reject" thing here. If you're going to reject someone, don't invite them. That said, there is a Past members display for Premium groups. Perhaps you would like a way to manually enter email addresses into that (as you can for banned)?

"Moderate" might have limited utility, if you've predetermined that you want this invitee to continue to be moderated beyond the New Users Moderated value already set up for Spam Control. But a moderated member is still a member. It's not really a different category, just a flag set in their member record.

Note that it is possible to allow non-members to post to your group (Admin>Settings>Message Policies). Such messages are always moderated.

I get it that you want some way to manage email addresses that aren't currently subscribed to the group. I'm just not sure it should be integrated with the invitation system. Hopefully the above will help you accomplish some of your objectives.

Regards,
Bruce

Recommend feature: invitation type #featurerequest

When moving members from Yahoo Groups, we had banned a guy from the group that was well known for bad behaviour.? His aliases were also known. Though we have a restricted group, it would be nice to be able to categorize known bad players using their email address.

For clarity, an invitation is only extended to a non-member by specification of an email address and a comment field (display name).

I recommend an extension to the current invitation capability to include a new parameter that defines the "type" of invitation. The default would be "type"='new member'. Other options would include type='reject', type='moderated', and type='ban'.? As in night clubs, if a non-member attempts to enter a club they are extended an invitation to enter (default), or extended an invitation to leave (rejected but where the user can make their case for entry), or banned (rejected with prejustice which is permanent), or possibly enter but we're keeping our &#*! eye on you (moderated). Also an invited non-member name could be generalized using a regular expressions (regex, the best option) or a string that contains wild cards (globs).? This would allow you to accept/reject based on a domain name, or other system generated keys like? ?so_and_so+invite_67@...

groups.io already has the ability to moderate an existing member, but that would not apply to non-members so that should not generate a conflict.

If these features are implemented, the name could be changed from invitations to non-member invitations or maybe just non-member administration to reduce user confusion?

Comments?

Is that even possible now? I looked at one of my Yahoo groups and
there were no longer links to files, photos, or old messages. Yahoo
sent out a message recently that access to those has been shut off,
but that you can apply for them to download them for you. Perhaps
whatever they provide for people will be enough to separate the files
and upload them individually. Let's hope so as there are plenty of
people who didn't act quickly enough to avoid disaster.

Fortunately, I acted well in advance of this whole thing and have all
the groups I care about archived in PGO, waiting on the program that
will be able to upload them to be in full working order. What I've
seen of it so far is great. It has some bugs that are being addressed
as I write this.

Re: Message from Yahoo today #yahoo

The extension is from YAHOO, not Groups.io. If you have already downloaded all the files you want from your Yahoo groups this extension doesn't do anything for you. It is only of use to people who haven't gotten the data from their Yahoo groups yet. It gives them an extra month to do so.

If you have your files, etc. and want to move them to a Groups.io group you have to do it yourself. You can find info on the process at

They can send an email to?Subscribe: main+subscribe@[GROUPNAME].groups.io
(Substitute your group name.)

I guess you know about direct add, invites, etc.

Links to options in the wiki.
See especially -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation

Is your group restricted? If it isn't, they can just click on Join This Group on your group homepage.?

If you were wondering about using the group-owner e-mail address, perhaps your group is restricted and you want to vet your applicants.
If yes, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Screening-New-Members-Using-the-Pending-Subscription-Notice

Yes.

If this was done intentionally, does anyone know why?
After discussions on the beta group a few years ago, that's the way Mark designed it.

Your browser may be reading an older guidelines document from its cache.?Try a hard refresh (ctrl-F5) while viewing the guideline and see if that fixes it.?

I just tried in my test group and it was fine.
Just check that the Group Guidelines notice is ticked as active.
Otherwise, I don't know.

Question re Guidelines message displayed in Sidebar #howto

Just noticed a typo in the active Guidelines message on our group. Went to Admin > Settings and corrected it then saved. But when I clicked on Guidelines in the Left-hand Sidebar again the typo was still there, even though it shows as corrected in the text under Settings > Member Notices.

I then tried changing its message type from 'Group Guidelines' to 'Notice to Member', saving it, then refreshing the page and after that changing the message type back to 'Group Guidelines'. But even so, the text of the message that displayed when I clicked on the Left-hand sidebar has remained the same as before, with the typo still in place even though it has been corrected and saved in Member Notices.

So could someone please explain to me how to correct the text of the message that displays when 'Guidelines' is selected from the Left-hand sidebar.

What am I overlooking with this? Hopefully it is something simple.
