Re: #howto #newsletters #askmembers How do I set up a place for adding monthly newsletters I will "import"? #howto #newsletters #askmembers

Rick,

I'm confused. Do I set up a database, topic, category for a monthly
repository of a *newsletter* from another org?
If one can subscribe to those newsletters such that they are delivered by email, you could try using an email integration to post the newsletters into your group.

The question then is whether you can get the newsletter source to accept the integration email address for a subscription.

You can set the Integration to be moderated or not, your choice. Probably best to start with it set to moderated, so that if the newsletter source begins by sending a confirmation request or other "getting started" messages you catch them in the Pending list rather than have them go out to group members.

I have created hashtags such as #newsAfrica.
You can set the integration to add that Hashtag to the newsletters posted through that address.

I want to avoid lumping all postings to the group in one "dump".
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, but having that hashtag attached to each newsletter posting will allow members to seek them out (via the Hashtags page) or Mute them or Follow them.

As you may have noticed when creating hashtags, there are a lot of options you can apply to topics tagged with a given hashtag.

Re: Help needed - member cannot see group photos on a smart phone

Jennifer,

However, when using her smart phone - photos on groups.io are not
visible. A note comes up that her yahoo email is not registered.
I've had good results using the "Email Link To Log In" method to log in on my android phone. I use the default Gmail app, with its built-in web browser, clicking on a link in a message to get to the group.

It is important that she log in using the same email address that is subscribed to your group. She can find that address at the bottom of the footer of any individual or digest message she receives from the group.

Re: Yahoo Group Import Question

Spica Speakers Group,

Since I have successfully exported and downloaded my Yahoo group, can
you import from my downloaded file or do you need to make a direct
connection as outlined in the FAQ?
The formal mechanism required a direct copy from the Yahoo Group.

However Mark has indicated they can import message content in mbox file format, likely requiring the same $220 upgrade to Premium Yearly. I believe the Yahoo getmydata download is in the correct mbox format.

The alternatives are Lena's program (free) to re-post mbox downloads, and Wilson's planned PGO-2-GIO program ($50 and up) to re-post PGO downloads. Both suffer the defect that the reposted messages appear under the From address of the person doing the reposting, and at the current date, rather than the original From address and message Date.

okay to be "honest" the owner made me a moderator 6+ years ago and has
since disappeared. All attempts to reach him have thus far failed.
I'd say your position as moderator qualifies you to make this decision on behalf of your group's members, no less than the mods who happen to have the privilege to promote the transfer agent.

I'm not as concerned about potential legal challenges to moving a group to Groups.io. I think that line was crossed when Groups.io decided to create the transfer process in the first place. Accomplishing it by other means does not seem (to me) to change why or how a plaintiff would lodge the complaint nor how Groups.io would handle it.

Honey, I shrunk the photos

All,

Wanted? to share my? experience dealing with photos.? For our migration from Yahoo, I? didn't have the photos included.? Why? Because the pictures ran from 8Kb to 6Mb, and, in the new regime, I wanted to save space and use resources efficiently.? So, I worked from downloaded files, downsizing them before upload.? I used a free utility, .?? I found that setting the size (the first setting) at 100%, and the file size (a sliding bar) at 240K worked pretty well most of the? time.? In this way, I could process a folder/directory of photos of mixed file size, so it would ignore the small ones and compress the big ones.? Going from a 2 or 3 Mb photo to a 240kb? or less photo did not impact the? quality very? much.? I estimate that about 2/3 of the? pictures were already "small".

The bulkresizephotos? application does not (they say) upload and process the pictures; rather it runs a job on your machine and places the? results in your brouser defined downloads file in a .zip format. Very? fast. ? The software appears to react to? settings? in the order you make them.? Some of the? time, rather? than setting a file size limit, I chose 100% size and 1024X768 for size.? This seemed to? have about the same results as the other.??

I did a copy and paste from the downloaded file name to the groups.io album name, cleaning up as I went.? Groups.io sorts/arranges albums? by upload date/time only.?? I'm? dealing with 1940's to 1960's jeeps and wagons (willystech), so, to the extent possible, I used the order they? were sorted by my computer- numbers first, then? alphabetical, to be the upload order. I don't like that my name is displayed ast he uploader of all of the albums and pictures.? I? could have monkeyed around with another email address and name to change it to "Archive" or similar, could still do this.? Also, there is a list of names? and email addresses? provided by Groups.io, so you can't enter anything that's not a name or entry in the directory. ? I only know a few of the correct names or addresses associated with? albums. ? I don't know if this was handled better by the the groups.io migration process.

Alternatively, I could have migrated the? pictures, and then deleted the big ones and replace with smaller ones- Kb and Mb I mean, using a screen shot application- Preview in the Mac world- but I don't know how I could put replacement pictures back in album in the same place they were.? Most of the time this would not be important.

I have all the files "shrunk" ready? to upload; I've uploaded over half of them.? The users are just thrilled to have a working system again, I don't know if they care about all the old pictures or not.??? Getting there.?? A lot of work, fun to see all the pictures? though.

Yes.

The download includes all groups of which you are a member, mod or owner.

It does not appear to contain complete content of Files, Photos, or Attachements (at least in my downloads) but it does appear to be complete for the mbox files of messages.

New members would not be able to see the old posts, so that would seem

You could also start a free forum at Proboards.com. They also simply forward mail and keep no archives.

Re: group-description in invite ?

Ronaldo,

BTW as to "reposting policy"....Does not ticking the box mean that no
repostings are allowed at all, as in, double posts (accidental or
intentional) will not get passed-on?
It does not mean that.

Checking the box adds an item to the More menu that allows a member to repost their message:

It has no effect on posts made by email, nor even posts made via web using the New Topic or Reply features.

It is primarily intended for groups that allow selling or giving away items: a repost in such a group would be appropriate for an item that didn't sell or for which there are more available.

Re: Did all messages migrate from Yahoo? #migration #messages #yahoo

Dano, Shal, Gerald,

Shal I did your suggestion and had a look at the activity log.? No there was no option to search specifically for deleted msgs, but I scanned about 3 years down.? It was even more of a pain, because there were no "next" buttons; I had to plug in new dates after scanning each page.? Anyway, I found only 3 deleted msgs in 3 years, 2 were my own deletions for mistakes, one other by a member.? I stopped there, as I don't think the first 2 years will yield much different results.? If anyone left in disgust taking their messages with them, I would think it would have been in the more recent years, when the group was slowing down and petering out.? But I appreciate the suggestion, Dano and Shal.? The investigation validated what I remember.

Emma,

Sadly, I'm having the login failure over at PGO you warned me about.? I wrote Wilson (developer) about it, and can post his response if you or anyone is interested.? It got a bit complicated.? He did offer his personal assistance in doing it for me if I couldn't figure it out, which I will no doubt end up doing.? Going to try one more time to restart it up first.? If you want to write him directly, use info@...

Anyone,

This may be a stupid question, but re: YG download packet - are they backing up all the groups you were subscribed to (not just the one/s you own)?? Because I found msgs from a different group than the one I own.? Some of these groups were massive - I have all their posts and files now?? (Haven't had a program or time to go through everything yet, just opened a few posts in wordpad).

Thanks,

I would too, but on the assumption that with so many thousands of groups, the average number of members per group is statistically similar between the existing and new cohorts, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the number of groups is also about double.

To repeat what Shal said earlier, we are not groups,io, we are a
self-help group. If you need customer support you need to contact
them.

About PG Offline. Assuming that you're too late to get your group
messages transferred, if you want to move your Y!G messages, you can
purchase PG Offline to download all the messages from all of your
groups. For the one you want to transfer, you will then need to
purchase PGO-2-GIO, which is in development but is looking pretty good
(I'm beta testing it) but has some work that needs to be done yet.

The latter program will use what you've downloaded in PG Offline and
upload it slowly to your GIO group. If you haven't opened the group to
others yet, you can upload them into the main group. If there are
members already, you would need to create a subgroup and upload them
there.

Both progams can also work with files and photos. Be aware that if
your GIO group is not a premium one, you are limited to 1 GB total for
photos and files. I had to delete some stuff in one ham radio group to
fit it on GIO after downloading it from the Y!G. PGO-2-GIO can't get
around that limitation magically. If your GIO group is a premium one,
you're limited to 10 GB, I believe.

Don't wait for PGO-2-GIO to be finished before Dec 14 to purchase both
together (though it may be ready before then). You need PG Offline NOW
to get your group's content NOW. You can upload the content PG Offline
archived for you anytime since you will have already downloaded it
before Dec 14.

Keep that date in mind, and don't assume Yahoo won't have some
problems before then that might get in the way of downloading content.
If you wait until the last minute, Yahoo may be overloaded and ruin
your attempt to get the group content archived.

In other words, get started now unless you find that GIO support will
take care of moving your group, but find that out ASAP and don't drop
the ball. If they can't help you but you paid for premium to get the
transfer, ask for a refund. I believe Mark is giving refunds to those
who are affected.

I hope this is helpful. The trial version of PG Offline is limited to
1,000 files, photos, or messages. It's just to show that it works, not
to allow you to do everything for free. PG Offline is $24.95.
PGO-2-GIO will cost more than that, and there is a fee based on how
many total messages that you will be transferring to GIO. But it will
end up costing you a lot less than the $220 per group that GIO was
offering until they cut off transfers.

To download the program or learn more, see these web pages:

I suggest viewing the video demo at the bottom of the page at the
second link.

Re: PG Offline

I've used both. Both worked to get past the Y!G limit of 1000.

Further, the Chrome application works in Vivaldi browser! (Chromium based.)

The only thing a wee bit different is the Applications don't show as a button, so one enters
vivaldi://apps
in the address bar and the available applications show in a web page.

_Unlike_ the description one receives an output (from Save) in comma delimited format. Works fine.

I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but since we're on this topic, I am having issues with Gmail moving whitelisted senders automatically to my "spam" folder - not every message from every sender, but too many for comfort. Many are from commercial companies to whose lists I have subscribed but some are personal correspondence. Does anyone have any idea why Gmail would be doing?this? It started only recently, within the last couple of months, but it is getting quite irritating.

And no, I never delete directly from "spam"; I move it to the inbox and do it there.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

GIO doesn't remove a member for sending SPAM to the group. That is up
to the moderators to determine.

Now if the member deletes a message from GIO and it's in their spam
folder, they mark it as SPAM, or their email provider marks it as SPAM
and it's left in the spam folder long enough that the email provider
automatically deletes it, then GIO will unsubscribe them.

This arrangement had to be agreed upon by forum platforms like GIO to
reduce unwanted messages for the email users (members). I believe this
is part of the DMARC specification for the web to help reduce spam. At
any rate, if GIO did not implement this, they would be blacklisted by
some email providers. This is supposed to be for our protection but it
only works well if people are aware of how it works and to NOT mark
messages as spam that aren't, check their spam folders, don't delete a
message in the spam folder that isn't spam, etc.

It's up to the members to treat GIO messages as messages and not SPAM,
and for moderators/owners to train and educate their members about
this. If the members don't read your messages about this (you do send
out a message now and then about this, don't you?), then they will end
up being kicked off the group.

Some of our groups have a monthly reminder sent out about this so new
members will see this soon after they join. I might make it a message
they will get when joining, too, but we haven't had many members make
that mistake and get kicked out. Most of those who have immediately
rejoin, and hopefully they actually read the email they get after
being removed.

Do I like the way this works? Not at all. But we're stuck with it
since email providers have demanded it and we wouldn't be getting
messages from forum platforms without the platforms agreeing to do
this.
