Have a look at the Wiki here on GMF, /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home? It may give you an idea for one possible use.? Some groups don't enable it, others use it heavily, and everything in between.? It can be used for anything that is revised frequently, as well as things that are fairly static.? By default, any member can edit a page, but you have the option on each page to only allow moderators to edit it.? Unlike Files, it doesn't use any of the group's storage space, except for any photos within it.

Re: How to use the wiki option

Well, visit the GMF wiki to see how we use it.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home

On a travel group that I belong to, we use it for a links library.
On another group, we used it for planning a trip.
Basically it is a mini version of Wikipedia!
Do with it whatever you wish.
Usually pages are editable by all members but you can lock pages.

Thank you Duane!

Yes, HIPAA (not HIPPA)? All I meant by that is:
Doctor tells a family member something
Family member needs to tell the Team something

No lawyer needed.? You know how things like chemo work, you spend 2 days in the hospital, then have an insane regimen of pills to do at home. And it goes: pill X every 4 hours for 3 days then stop, pill Y is every 6 hours for 5 days then stop. ? Pill Z starts 3 days after hospital chemo every 8 hours.? Pain meds as needed but not to exceed 4 in 24 hours..??

So yes, the private messaging is the way to go.?

Hello,
Sorry, I have another question. What is the wiki option used for, and how does it work?

This is something relatively new (started in May), so we don't have much information about the process yet.? Before you can use the page, you'll need an account with Stripe, ? They'll likely ask for similar information, so it might give you some clues.? If possible, you might use the name of your group for the company name.

If you (or anyone else) does set this up, detailed information (without private details) posted here would probably help others later.

Yes, that's what you should do.
I started a wiki page on this. If you have more details, let us know so we can update it.

Re: For a group discussing medical info

BJ -- I will assume that most of these questions are rhetorical and all you really want to know here is what's going on with the private archives warning.

Private archives means that those messages are visible only to subscribers. In stark contrast, a public archive can be read by anybody. And when I say anybody, I mean anyone in the world who finds the URL.

For example, the archives here in GMF can be read by ANYONE. You don't need to be subscribed to GMF...you don't even need to have a groups.io account. I've even found some of the posts indexed in search engines.

Understandably, many people might be reluctant to post things to a public group, even if it doesn't involve a sensitive issue like medical privacy. That's why the privacy setting is displayed on your group's home page. And that's also why once you make your group private, you cannot make it public again. It is a breach of trust -- and may not even be legal -- to tell people that their posts will be restricted to a limited audience, only to have the group Owner later betray that trust by changing his mind.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

The words should be Public and Private.? For a group with Public archives, anyone that goes to the group page can read the messages, as /g/updates

With Private archives, you must be a member of the group and logged in before you can read them, as /g/Rialta

I'm sure you'll want it Private.? You can have it listed in the Directory without a problem as long as you don't reveal anything that should be private on the Home page.

As far as discussing HIPAA covered conversations, that would need to be determined by a lawyer.

You should also check on your Settings page, in the Privacy area, to make sure you have the Member Directory disabled.? If enabled, anyone with their profile enabled will show there, along with an Email button to contact them directly.

For a group discussing medical info

Brian Jennings

I was hoping to use Groups.io to be a hub for a friend who has a scary diagnosis that preliminarily involves the keywords "brain" and "tumor" .?? We have local friends and distant friends and family.? The idea is to use the platform to coordinate hospital/home visits, who's coming in to town (calendar) and post in one place any tidbit of info if a member of the team is present while a doctor is discussing something important, because let's face it, "brain" and "tumor" do not mix well with "short term memory". ??

So, it's intended as a hub to share HIPPA-covered conversation. So "open" and "private" are the areas of confusion.? When I try to create a group, currently as a test to see if this works for friends, family and the man of the hour at the center, what the heck does this warning mean??

"Are you sure you wish to make this group's messages private? Private messages cannot be reverted to open later.? "?

First, the platform just said in the Create Group guidlines "if this is a test, make it private" now it's warning me if I take that recommendation??? Am I dooming ALL messages to be private forever (and is that even a bad thing for my group?), or JUST the ones I'm doing as a test and I can make the site open in the future and so future messages will be open??

It may be good for the Group to be in the directory as existing/displayed, but private/open messages are not defined in the FAQ.?
Is there a FUQ list? (frequently UNasked questions?)?? Can I do the reverse, take "open" messages "private"???? I'm not warned in that direction.? What does "open" even mean, I can google them and they'll come up???? Or on the Groups.io site only??

Thanks for clarifying.
BJ

Too late now, but you could have just renamed it to one of the groups you need, /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Renaming-a-Group

I think you'll need to contact support again, especially if you didn't specify how many more groups you needed the first time.? If you could wait 48 hours though, it would give us additional information that could be included in the Wiki.

How to remove reply to sender from footer

Sorry, I should have added to the previous message and asked how to remove ¡°Reply to Sender¡± as an option in the footer of emailed posts.

Susan B

How to remove reply to sender from footer

We need to find a way to prevent members from replying to the owners¡¯ private email addresses. I see that if a member posts a message, and I click reply, a box pops up that says, on the bottom, Reply to Group (green Button on left), and Private, a silver button on the right. We want to get rid of the private option. It¡¯s very important to us that our personal inboxes don¡¯t become clogged with list messages. We have always told members not to send private messages to us because that deprives over members of learning answers to questions they also may have. We do encourage them to use the list-owner address instead.

We also don¡¯t want members privately emailing each other. Some snarky business has happened in the past when they do this. So it is one of our rules that they not do this. In this case, we want the member to report it to the list-owner address.

Thank you.

Susan B

Re: Maximum number of groups?

An update. On 11 Nov 2019, I was able to add an additional 19 groups.

I suspect that it should've been 20, because the 1st group I created, after being capped at 20 on 9 Nov 2019, was a test group, which I subsequently deleted when I realised I could now add more. So I'm guessing that deleted group counted towards my additional quota of 20.

Perhaps it's a limit of 20 created groups per 48 hour period???

I have just 6 more to go then I'm done, so hopefully by 13 Nov 2019 I'll be able to add these last 6.

Re: Security and Privacy

opnagroup,

1. Many members didn't like being "auto-added" to groups.io without
the option to "opt-in" after the transfer.
You mean, as opposed to the opt-out they get in the "You've been added" notice?

As I recall that was discussed (in beta) during the development of the Easy Yahoo Group Transfer. The concern was that requiring an opt-in would result in a very low success rate for transfers, because getting people to receive, read, and respond can be a high hurdle. And especially in a situation like now, when there's been precious little time to inform and prepare the Yahoo Group membership in advance.

Are there privacy issues?
No more so than with a Yahoo Group, in my opinion.

In some respects perhaps fewer concerns, in that Groups.io has conformed its privacy policy to Europe's GDPR requirements, and Yahoo Groups may not have. (Although the existence of the Yahoo getmydata facility suggests that they were paying at least some attention).
/static/privacy

2. Are the content and messages stored securely (encrypted database or
what ever is being used)?
The external connections are secure (HTTPS protocol), but I doubt if the database(s) of message and other content is itself encrypted. I could be wrong though, if it has come up before I don't recall what was said. If you really need to know I think you'd have to ask [email protected], or maybe in beta when things settle down.

Passwords are another matter, I'm certain that Groups.io stores them as secure hashes per current best practices, not plain text.

3. Longevity of groups.io. How can we tell if this is a viable
business and not disappear tomorrow?
The short answer is that you can't.

In terms of financial viability Groups.io runs on a Freemium business model: the groups that upgrade to Premium or Enterprise plans are subsidizing those that operate on the Basic plan. That's it, no ads, no advertisers, no tracking and selling of your personal data.

The founder of Groups.io feels that Freemium will prove to be a more stable model in the long run, than trying to chase money from advertisers. That relates to the message Duane cited in the "prophesy" topic:

More recently he has suggested that an upgrade to Premium, even for a month, is the best way you can help ensure Groups.io's financial viability.
