I ٳthe answer to this is "no", but in case I missed something...
Our group is one of the ones being made homeless by Yahoo, and we're in the transfer queue right now. Making the most of the opportunity we've been looking to see if there are things we can make use of in GIO that simply weren't there in Y! which should be a benefit to members (of course there are!). The one that jumped out immediately is the subgroup. The membership is essentially a peer group, so we wouldn't use subgroups to segregate members as such, but rather to coarsely categorise content. Although having now established that you can't move topics between groups - a shame - it would only be a bare handful of subgroups, we'd probably use hashtags for the finer categorisation. All members would be entitled/encouraged to be in all subgroups with the possible exception of a moderators subgroup. So, the point of the question: Can I have a new member automatically subscribed to a sub group (or groups) without me or another moderator having to direct add, or inviting the member? Not a deal breaker especially, but it would be nice to take one more manual step out of the admin process or the user's process. The subgroups of course would be set unrestricted so minimum hurdles to jump, but even so... Thanks in advance! Derek |
Re: Move messages AFTER group transfer?
You could forward them, but they lose their ownership and threading.
You could download them and put them in Files in your group homepage on Groups.io. You say "snapshot". It is more than that! 5. What gets transferred using the Transfer Agent?
Groups.io can transfer message archives, properly owned and properly threaded, (without attachments, however), photos, files, links and databases. Calendar entries are not copied at this time. Subscribers (members) are also transferred, maintaining their subscription options and ownership of each message and other group content.
Those with "no mail" status in YG migrating to a Groups.io group with "no mail" disabled will have Special Notice status instead.
Have you checked your transfer status?Check the wiki for instructions - and see also about posting after transfer: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups 9. How do I stop people posting on Yahoo Groups after the transfer?
If you didn't uncheck the 'Send a message to your members when the transfer is complete' box they will be sent a welcome message (ditto if you have a group welcome message). That will be tracked for bouncing. Whether that actually triggers someone being removed depends on the type of bounce back received.
Assuming you have already sent the group a notice of intent to transfer, you only need follow up with those who didn't get the message. The easiest way is to put the entire group on moderation. Or in the YahooGroup management settings, you can set it so that nobody can post to the group.
After transfer you could post the group email address on YahooGroups saying that this group has moved.
You might suggest the members tidy up their address book. In Apple Mail, you can delete unwanted previous recipients (under Window).

Re: My group transferred BUT is missing first two years of messages (about 20,000)
Bill,
My group transferred last night, and all messages prior to 1/12/2007 are gone. If you haven't already, you might want to try Yahoo Groups' downloader:
I say that because Y!GMF's founder discovered that for one of his groups it contained old messages which he could no longer access through the Yahoo Groups interface.
That won't help you get the messages into your Groups.io group, but if it works for you at least you'd have them.

Bill Kay
Well, I'm glad that the capability to bring messages over goes that far back.
My group is under 100,000 messages, and the 2005 / 2006 messages disappeared. I've emailed [email protected] Maybe they can re-export, re-import ..... or at least try another re-import or partial re-import. |
Re: Deleting applications to join
It's the blue pull-down menu at top left. What I'm loving about GIO is that it's so rich in features -- and there are so many valuable ways I can play with the list. Finding those features, though, and this isn't a complaint, is sometimes a challenge. --Steve

On a similar topic, our Settings are: Restricted Membership
and New Users Moderated. When the transfer takes place, will new users
still be moderated for the first message?

Didn't I see something to the effect that Groups.IO will allow us only to carry 10 years worth of message history? There have been several 'limits' over the years on GIO. At one time, all transfers were free. Later, a paid group was needed to transfer more than 100,000 messages. Most recently, a year of premium is needed to do the transfer. I'm seeing groups with messages back to 1997 and 1998, so they can be transferred. Bill - Can you see the earlier messages? I'm wondering if the transfer agent ran into the something similar to whatI have. I'm trying to rescue an orphan group, and as of yesterday morning Yahoo tells me the group doesn't evenexist, even though it's stillin my list of groups. At this point all I can do is wait a few days and hope Yahoo restores things.
If you *can* see those first messages, your options may be to request another transfer or contact support. Bruce can bestadvise you on those options.

text in post not showing on digest
Has anyone had this happen? A member sent in a message with text and 4 attachments. It came through fine on individual and plain digest, but on the full digest, only the subject line and the attachments came through. The entire message did not appear. The only thing that could be is that the original message was forwarded (it had those arrows in front of each line). Any thoughts? If this is a bug, any point to submit to support or he's too busy? Thanks, Sally |
Re: "Average Pace" of transfers
This is a crazy system. We were 691 groups ahead of mine at 2:30 this afternoon. Has anyone paid extra in the last couple of days and can tell me what the progress chart looks like for you? |
