Re: "Average Pace" of transfers

The uptick in price for Premium along with the $200. expedite fee (I opted for both and got the $110 with 15 minutes to spare), both happened on the same day, October 22, as I recall. ?Not wanting to be held up in a long line, I held my nose and jumped in the transfer pool that day, unsure what would happen. ?I feel very fortunate because, although I was told it would take several days, the transfer was complete in three hours. ?

I know this is of no help to those now waiting with hundreds of groups ahead of them, but I wanted to reply to your comment. ?To those who are waiting, I thinking the expedite fee might well be worth it, if you can afford it, though I have no idea at this point how much of a boost it will give you. ?All the very best.

What I do know is that it is very important to set up your group and its options, though they can be changed later, before your transfer occurs. ?I was so glad I had done that the day before.

I understand the charge of $ 220 for the first year but is that the do it yourself transfer option? Is the expedited charge of $200 the fee for Groups IO to do it?

new members during migration #addmembers #moderation #migration

I received a notification of a "pending member" for my Groups.io group. We are currently in the mid-migration holding pattern. What's the wisdom on how to proceed here. Should I just accept the pending subscription? Advise them to join the Yahoo Group? Or have them wait until the migration is complete.

In other data migrations I've been involved with, the concept of "freezing" activity at some point has been crucial to make sure all the data (and users) get transferred. Any thoughts on how best to approach this?

Thanks,
Terry

Upload Photos Freezing

I have been trying to replicate our Yahoo Groups photo archive on Groups.io and while setting up 19 albums and transferring photos to 18 of them successfully have run into a? freezing problem on the 19th album .The entire photos directory only occupies 47MB .

On the 18 albums I have 377 photos and album 19, I have 396 photos uploaded out of possible 400,? but find when I attempt to upload images even singly, when I press 'Add' , all I get is a blank white screen.? I have tried different browsers without success and assume that my attempts are either blocked or throttled back .? ?If so what limiting condition is being applied ?

But if you have a lot of time on your hands, it's possible to migrate everything but the message archive yourself, using freely available tools. Please see the FAQ at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups, starting at #10. Meanwhile, Mark is offering refunds to those who paid for Premium but are unable to complete the process. See details.

Bruce: Thanks for your advice. The FAQ led me to PG Offline, which seems like a decent option.

Since it turns out we won't be able to use the Groups.io Transfer Agent to migrate from our Yahoo group, I can't see any benefit from having the one-year Premium level. However, a one-month Premium level would be extremely useful to directly add members. I'm trying to see if we change to just a one-month Premium level, and receive a $200 refund.

Thanks to you and everyone for your tips, which may be a big help.

For Duane (I think) in particular ¨C

?

I am sure I am just a member in the Yahoogroup, and the problem we ran into was that the original founders (incl. The original owner, presumably) had a policy difference with the Yahoogroup even *existing* (I think). They decided to go with Facebook only and wanted to discourage the continuance of the Yahoogroup. I can¡¯t understand that, because FB imho is good for some things, like sharing Photos and Events, but Yahoogroups and now groups.io are much better if you actually want to discuss issues in depth. The result was that one man stepped forward to act as group owner of the Yahoogroup, and the other people went their merry way with FB. However, when this recent crisis with Yahoogroup arose, he established the ¡°new¡± group on groups.io and appointed me and another lady as co-moderators with him. But, as it pertains to the Yahoogroup, it transpired that not only wasn¡¯t he ¡°group owner,¡± now he¡¯s not even listed as a member of the Yahoogroup. OTOH, my other co-moderator of the groups.io group and I are only ordinary members of the Yahoogroup. So, yes, we can send a message to the Yahoogroup, but I don¡¯t think we can change a member¡¯s status to receive ¡°Special Notices¡± if they are ¡°Nomail,¡± and so on. We have sent messages to let people know what was happening and invite them to join us, and we have collected many email addresses from people who were regular posters, but we did want to do something that would really catch their attention. OTOH, we are up over 50 members on groups.io now, and there is plenty of message traffic, so if nothing else, it is working, if slowly.

?

I just don¡¯t understand being so close-minded about FB versus a discussion group ¨C it seems to me that there is room for both avenues! But ¡°it is what it is.¡± ?

There is no simple way of doing this; there is certainly no click here to enable autoforwarding.

I am tempted to ask why. Although it may seem brutal IMHO the best option is to disable posting on your Yahoo group immediately after posting a message there to the effect that from "now" all business will be via the Groups.io group. If you enable members to use Groups.io by posting on Yahoo you risk extending the transition period during which your individual members stop sending to Yahoo and start sending to Groups.io instead.

Another complication would will be that (a) submits a post to Yahoo (which is then forwarded to Groups.io) and then (b) replies. But will (a) see (b's) reply? Perhaps, perhaps not. Unless you set up bidirectional forwarding then I think you are providing a mechanism for growing confusion.

Your members might grumble (many probably will regardless) but I genuinely think that a sharp transition is the best way forward.

You were correct ! That residual setting in my account was so old it must have been done with a MS DOS command line ? Thanks.... Should all be fixed now.

It looks like you have at your mailhoster setup a forward to this old address. This is not a groups.io problem, but some setting at your mail service.

Re: reply to sender/group

Test:
I¡¯m using the web interface on my iPad.
There are three buttons o the bottom -?
A green button with a universal ¡°reply¡± or send arrow and ¡°Reply to Group¡±
A red button with a trash can and ¡°Discard¡±
And far to he right, by itself, a transparent button with no icon and ¡°Private¡± which I presume is same as replying to sender as. A private message.?

will have to look on my laptop to see if it displays the same. I agree I hate when something meant for the group is sent privately but what I see here is pretty clear IMO.?

Subgroup members can post on the main group.

Group already part of a transfer

I'll admit first off that I'm new to group management, so be prepared for some ignorance on my part.
I'm trying to transfer a group from Yahoo. I was just made owner of the group (R_and_R_engines), due to the ill health of the previous owner.
I've created a new IO group (RandREngines) and upgraded to Premium.
I've filled out the transfer request page.
The page tells me that group is already part of another transfer.
I suspect that a transfer may have been started by the previous owner, but a search in groups.io doesn't show any group with a similar name or content.
I have asked the previous owner of the Yahoo group for help, but not sure if he will be able to.

Can anyone advise me how I should find out about the 'other transfer' that my Y! group is involved in and how to resolve this situation, please?

Thanks,
Pete.

Re: PG Offline users #pgoffline

Make sure to send it as "Special Notice".
Before I sent mine when I moved my groups to io, I also took everybody from "no mail" (which I didn't allow anyway, but some people don't care...) to "special notice", so that it really went to all members.

Johanne:

Here's what Yahoo had posted at: ?

Attention: Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019. Sending/Receiving email functionality is not going away, you can continue to communicate via any email client with your group members

My interpretation:? As of October 28th, no one would be able to upload "user created content" (meaning photos, files, links, etc.).?

After December 14, all that "user created content" will be removed/purged from Yahoogroups.

It doesn't explicitly say whether this purge includes the message archives for each group or not, so that is unclear.

Even after December 14 it sounds as if you will be able to send and receive messages via email.?

As it doesn't mention whether you can use the web interface specifically to send and receive messages the future of that feature is also unclear.?

I think it's best to assume that the message archives will be removed, and if wrong, at least you will have your messages on Groups.io (if you choose the migration option), or in PG Offline.?

David

Syncing new messages from Yahoo to Groups.io after group transfer #yahoo

Hi Everyone,

I own a fairly large Yahoo group, and it has transferred successfully to Groups.io.

I've set the Yahoo group to require moderation of new posts for the moment.

I'd like to have new posts to Yahoo group automatically propagate to the Groups.io group until I close down the Yahoo group entirely. Is there a best practice for doing so?

I've thought of directly adding the Groups.io group address to the Yahoo group, but it looks like Yahoo is requiring a Yahoo ID for that now. I've also thought of setting up a single purpose Yahoo account as a member of both the Yahoo Group and the Groups.io group and having it automatically forward any mail from the Yahoo Group to the Groups.io group, but that obviously loses sender info and seems like a kludge.

I tried searching the wiki and past messages for this topic, but I didn't find an answer. I apologize if this has been asked, and I just plain missed the info.

All suggestions are welcome.

Re: Yahoo has now created a downloader #yahoo

I received the same ¡°no data¡± message.?

My son researched various downloaders on Github and used yahoo-group-archiver by ignoredambience. ?It downloaded twenty years of everything in a few hours ?(our internet isn¡¯t all it should be or would have been faster) into json files. So I have a members list to do invites, and message and photo archives and now have time to decide how to best assemble them for member access.?
if you don¡¯t have a developer in house (I¡¯m just a user) you can either let groups.io do the work (and I¡¯m pretty impressed with how they¡¯ve been responding), devote time to manually download your group¡¯s stuff - which is kind of like cleaning out the basement or looking in that old box of photos.
I had already downloaded our files manually. Yahoo¡¯s members list download limits you to 1000 entries in a cvs file and only work sin one direction. But I was able to sort backwards (alpha on email address), scroll the entries the download didn¡¯t pick up and save as a pdf. This picked up all the entries the download missed and retained the column format.

Re: PG Offline users #pgoffline

I've have the same issue with a group I'm helping to transfer.

The issue is (or appears to be) the permissions that you have in the group with your ID. The export in PGO does export the email address field, so clearly tries to download it in the first place, but as just a member I only get my own email address in the download. Probably a good test is to look and see on the Y! web login if you can access member's details; if not, then it's unlikely PGO will be able to.

I'm not sure if you need just moderator or full owner permissions on the Y! group to get member's email addresses, I'm waiting for the group's owner to promote my membership so's I can test this.?
