Re: When you are in Stage 3
Eric Johnson
I am a moderator of a Yahoo forum granted permission to effect the conversion to Groups.io. I've gotten to the point of creating [email protected]. I've been told I need to set that address as a moderator in the Yahoo group. I can't find anyway to do this and have a sneaky feeling that I have to be the owner of the group to do make this change. Is this true and if not, how do I make the new member a moderator? Eric Johnson Toller67@... NAIAandNAIATrustMembers@... |

Photo Description content - Automated transfer from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io
Hi folks,
Just a simple question: During the Automated Transfer process from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io, does the photo or file DESCRIPTION content from my Yahoo Groups group get automatically carried across to my Groups.io group or is it just (eg in the case of photos) the photo filename & its album/folder that its located in that gets carried across? Need to know this ASAP please. Oh and our Yahoo group is a hobby group (non profit/no $) small group of only 200+ members, but active since 2005, with only 2-3GB of files & photos in storage. It's a huge ask to pay US$220 for at least the first year. Hopefully we can find the funds <sigh>. I like Groups.io - it continues to keep getting better. Hope you can offer a better deal for small no $ hobby groups like ours, where we freely offer our time for research & are responsible for preserving shortwave radio transmission infrastructure history - no one else is. I'm dirty on Yahoo Groups only giving us 6-7 weeks notice during the busy lead up to Christmas - not happy at all. Ian ? |

Re: Making members' email addresses invisible
I am sorry to say that you are wrong John. I read my group mail as an email - with both yahoo and io groups.? And I can assure you that in gmail webmail and reading in my email client the email address of the sender of both is visible (I just double checked with a yahoo group post I received a couple of hours ago). The choice is to hide the member list from members.? In my groups the members are only visible to owner and moderator, some group owners choose to have the member list visible to all. Re: Hoping there is an option/alternative for transferring a small non profit (tax exempt) organization's data from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io, without having to spend $110.00 on a one year membership
Why not do the transfer yourself? It takes a little time, but it is doable, especially if you have no need to transfer Messages. You've done the hard work - setting up a community in Groups.IO. You have a small number of subscribers, so getting individuals to switch should be straightforward.

Thanks for all your comments. It is clear it's not possible to make subscribers' email addresses invisible to other subscribers. I'm interested to hear that G.IO has had the situation assessed for GDPR compliance.

I'd just like to comment on one things that Duane said about YahooGroups. In my experience as Owner of a YG group, members' email addresses were NOT shown in their posts and therefore were not visible to anyone except to moderators and owners. Ditto the members' list, showing addresses, on our YG 'site', was only available to mods and owners, NOT to members. Re: Able to edit reject message heading?
Niman,
One question - is there a way to change the subject which appears whenYes. In the Member Notices tab of your group's Settings page, create one or more of type "Rejected Message" - these become templates you can select from a drop-list to pre-fill that Rejection note. But to the point, the Member Notice has a Subject field that is used for the outbound notice in place of the default Subject. After you've selected one of the prepared notices you can edit the content of the Rejection box. I usually have a few prepared Notices to cover the most common reasons for rejecting a message. Those edits won't be sent, so I use that as a way to further customize the note to the case at hand. It is a hidden and clumsy way to do it, and I've suggested (in beta) improving it so you can actually see / edit the Subject when working with the Rejection dialog, but it hasn't happened yet. Re: My little group's transfer saga
#transfer
I have seen several posters here on this Group Managers forum claim that Groups.io overpromised and underdelivered with regards to speed of transfers of groups from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io. I have a strong background in the IS/IT field (among other things, I managed a large software development department in the corporate world for many years) and from my perspective, I have seen zero evidence that Groups.io overpromised and underdelivered regarding the speed of the aforementioned transfers.
Here is a recap of my experience. I purchased Premium Yearly subscriptions for 7 groups here on Oct. 18 (all at the older $110/yr rate) and initiated transfers of 19 groups at Yahoo Groups into them starting early on the morning (East Coast US time zone) of Oct. 19th, and finishing the last of the transfer requests by late on the 19th or early on Oct,. 20th. In my experience, I feel that I was never promised a particular speed for the transfers, and from my perspective, I feel that that my numerous transfers have been proceeding at a reasonable and smooth pace, particularly given the challenges facing Mark and his staff at Groups,io, including the fact that they were hit with a unimaginably massive influx of of new customers, almost all of them wanting transfers from groups at Yahoo Groups. The first three transfer requests that I had filed early on Oct. 19th ended up on what was, at that time, only a very short queue (it has since grown massively in length, for obvious reasons), and each of the three were completed by Mark on Oct. 21. The remainder of my 19 transfers, each of which had been submitted by me significantly later on Oct. 19th (and one or two perhaps were not completely submitted until early on Oct. 20), ended up much further back in the queue, with their starting queue positions ranging from around 400 to 800.? After I witnessed the very understandable price increase from $110 to $220 for at least the first year of a Premium Yearly subscription to cover more fairly the costs of handling transfers, and bearing in mind that I had paid only $110 apiece for each of my 7 Premium Yearly groups, I decided that I wanted to throw some additional funds toward Groups.io to help reimburse them more equitably for all of the work involved in performing transfers from Yahoo Groups, and to help to ensure the long-term sustainability of the company, and so in short order I upgraded seven of my remaining transfers to Expedited status for an additional fee of $200 per transfer. Each of those 7 Expedited transfers was completed within 50 minutes of my having elevated the transfer to Expedited status. Now, if a 50 minute completion time from the moment that I elevated each transfer to Expedited sounds unreasonably short and speedy to you, it may help to bear in mind that six of the seven transfers involved Yahoo Groups that had memberships of 350 or fewer members, while one outlier group had a member count of about 2,000 members, and all of the transfers consisted solely of transfer of membership roster and message archives, because none of the groups had any files, photos or databases associated with them (well, to be more precise, one did have two photos...). It is also helpful to bear in mind that each of the 7 transfers that I had elevated to Expedited status had already been waiting in the queue at step 3 of 4. As of this moment in time, of my 19 original transfers, I still have 9 transfers in progress that are not yet completed, and their present placing in the queue at step 3 ranges from about 320 to somewhere in the low 600s. In general, I see each of them moving down the queue by anywhere from 18 to 43 positions per 24 hour period.? |
Re: When you are in Stage 3
Suzan,
I am not at that point, yet. But as it gets closer to Dec 14, I mightAt Step 3 December 14th is no longer a cutoff for you: your group content has already been copied out of Yahoo and is safe. You're only waiting to have the content loaded into your Groups.io group. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Hotmail/Outlook email
Ken,
from [email protected]Note that most members' email addresses are sent unmodified in the From field, so a test on the From field won't work for them. (Unless you list them all). If possible, use another field, like Sender, List-ID, or even a match on the group's Subject tag ("[GMF]" here).
