Re: Transferring a bunch of tiny groups

$220?? Don't you mean $110?? I've submitted requests to my little group's treasurer for the $110.

I've been trying to get in touch with Mark since last week to get a multiple-list rate, but my original email to support@ got a response (which might be an auto-responder), suggesting to join this managers group, and my reply to that got the same response..

Does anyone have contact with Mark, and can get messages to him?
(I was with eGroups since near the beginning.)

You can do what I did. All the groups where I belong to share some common interest. So I made a new group at groups.io to hold the groups together.

Then I setup a subgroup for the groups in question.

You have to pay one time the $220 for the main group. Then you can transfer some small groups to the subgroups.

But if the groups don't fit together this wouldn't be a good plan.

Then you have the choice to transsfer the files and members manualy and loose the message history. But if there are only a few posts you can put them in a pdf file at the files section.

You can use PG Offline for the download from yahoo. The trial version is for free, youcan use it I think 30 days or like this.

Greetings,

I have between 12 and 20 Yahoo groups, most of which are tiny (a few members, 100-200 posts, and maybe a handful of files (though some have no files), most of which aren't very active.? I can't afford $110 for each one.? Can someone as the groups.io owner(s) if I get them all transferred for one fee, or a rate for transferring all of them?

Thanks,

Thanks Duane, you hit the nail, as it were . . . It must've been a 'surge delay'.

Anyway the counter has resumed counting now, finally.

Thank you Bruce!

I had tried to find the split on the original message.? I see it on the subsequent message and it worked!? Wonderful! ?

You first have to click on the topic name to open it....scroll down to the first message where you want the split to occur, then click open the More menu on that message.

Thanks, Frances.? I guess my problem is a previous holder of the name.? We'll have to find an alternative.

Given that this problem looks like rattling on without any clear indication that a resultion will be forthcoming I have made a telephone enquiry to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) which is the UK body charged with overseeing data protection.

The initial assessment was that this misrouting of emails could well be within that office's remit as misrouting of this sort could result in a breach of the regulations, and I am aware of at least one instance whereby some considerable personal embarrassment arose because what was sent as a "private" communication (to a Group Owner) finished up being visible (albeit fairly briefly) on a group.

I will get in contact with "someone else" (the person affected above) to see if he is willing to go down the ICO route.

Without the Split option, if I change the Topic, does it change it for the whole thread?

Yes.

For this situation, you could Split the response to a new topic, giving it the subject line related to her, then lock that topic (and yours.)? (Edit Topic, Split, and Lock Topic are in the More menu below each message.)

Re: Limited number of invites? #invitation

Thanks Bruce. I uploaded it as a .prn file because that¡¯s how excel saved a space delimited file, maybe that was a problem. ?I may just end up cutting and pasting the whole thing instead so I can see it. ?I just expected an error message to pop up so I was confused as to what might have happened.

thanks for your help!

Add extra information to #members group #members #profile

I am trying to add some extra pieces of (structured) information to every Members Group Profile. Using the bio field would be possible, but we would like to have more structured way of doing this. Is this possible?

best,

The search indexer is lagging behind due to the importing of so many groups/messages, but it should catch up eventually.? Mark mentioned a few days ago that the indexer was crashing periodically from the load, so I'm sure he's working on it.

Re: Pleasure dealing with Groups.io

Our group that was started as a Yahoo group in 2002 migrated to groups.io in March 2018. It went so smoothly! We use almost every feature, have expanded membership significantly (about 1200 now), and have had very few glitches. I am so very pleased with groups.io.? Just recently when I noted a few things (hashtags, searches, for example) that are not working as usual, I came to this forum to see if others are experiencing the same issues. I see that there has been a major demand for transfers to groups.io that is taxing the system.? I am hopeful - confident - that things will get back to normal. The snafus are not affecting our most important functions.

Thanks for all you do everyone at groups.io.

Re: Narrow formatting in Digests?

Sandi,

But a lot of factors enter into how things are displayed.
I use a host and their "responsive" templates for one my website
customers fills my Mac computer screen in my browsers ...
The problem is different in an email message. The Groups.io site is responsive, but attempting to build fully responsive code is probably impractical given what various email interfaces are willing to allow in an email body.

Fortunately I think what Phil wants wouldn't require responsive coding. It would be enough for the style of the HTML not to set a fixed column width.

This has been mentioned in beta previously. Phil could take it up there again, once the surge of Yahoo Group transfers is over.

In the mean time, Phil might try the Plain Text digest. It won't have a fixed column width (nor any other formatting).

Re: BT + problem leads to ghost registration

Ken,

I am trying to help someone join my Group, but they have a BT email
address and so any attempt to join by email simply results in the
subscribe email being sent to the main Group address (as BT strips out
the +subscribe part) and is of course rejected.
As Chris said, that won't happen if they use their webmail interface rather than an SMTP client.

Trying to avoid the email route I asked him to try and subscribe via
the website, but when he enters his email address (required to
confirm) there is another error, stating that email address is already
registered and he needs to log in ...
That message says that he needs to use the Log In page, not the Sign Up page. He should believe what it is telling him.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Logging-In

which is clearly impossible as he is NOT a member, so his address is
NOT registered ...
Your inference is incorrect. A membership (subscription) in a group is separate from whether the person's email address has been registered at Groups.io. A single address (account) can participate in multiple groups. And even if this person is not yet a member of any other groups, the account may exist as a result of prior attempts at joining a group.

and there¡¯s no way he could ever have logged in previously and created
a password.
Again incorrect. You, as a group owner, cannot tell if they have or not - all you know is whether they've joined your group. The account exists independent of any group memberships, and even independent of whether the person ever logs in to use it.

Can anyone suggest how to clear this restriction or otherwise explain
what is going on and how to actually allow this person to join?
The person needs to use the Log In page. On that page select either the "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?" link or the "Email Link To Log In" button - both do the same thing.

Once logged in to Groups.io, the person should be able to Join your group (or Request membership, if your group is restricted).
