Re: anyone remember the approx date that NuM went into effect?

p.s. Re NuM (please send this post through as a p.s. to that one): I mean the automatic NuM with the number of posts specified, not just an M for putting new members on mod where the moderator has to unmoderate them by hand later. Member getting permanent error posting from email
A group member tried to reply via email and got a "Permanent Error" message twice, but is able to post fine from the web page. Other members don't seem to be having problems, but I don't know what to suggest to him. Does anyone have any insight or suggestions they could offer? He did copy the error message and sent it to me.

Re: FW: email delivery failures
Sugar,
In the mean time, these e mail keep popping up in my in box and inI'm not sure what "these emails" are, but one guess is that they are messages sent to the group's +owner address. Those are forwarded to moderators but the sender need not be a group member. Unlike Yahoo Groups, each group moderator can choose whether or not to receive +owner messages from non-members. Click on your Subscription page and down at the bottom there's an "Owner Email" option which will let you select: o All Emails - Receive every message that is sent to [email protected]. o Subscribers Only - Receive only messages sent by subscribers. o None - Receive no messages sent to [email protected]. I recommend that every group have at least one active moderator choose to receive "All Emails" - that way people who are having trouble joining the group can reach a moderator for help. When I saw these in my inbox this morning at around 9 a.m. my time, I... The bouncing emails that are no good are:This message from your fellow moderator is confusing. Emails that are "bouncing" are emails that were not delivered - they should not be appearing in her inbox. So I'm not clear on what the actual problem is. Shal |
Re: Search options
Cecil,
I just moved a group over from Yahoo and have had several complainsAs J mentioned, there is a new search engine being tested and you can try it by clicking on a link after making your initial search. I noticed myself that the search option does not take into accountIf you can find any message posted by that member, click on the "More" menu and select "All Posts By This Member". If that gives you too many results, add search terms to the search box (leave the posterid: keyword and number in the box) to search for specific messages by that member. This trick doesn't work in the new search however. Is there a fix to this issue, or is it being worked on?I'm hoping the the Tools (aka Advanced Search) button in new search will eventually expand to include other search fields, such as author (aka poster). IMO the new search ought not go "live" until it does. Right now it only has a selector for time ranges. Shal |
Re: Search options
J_Catlady
I've been mentioning/complaining/ranting about this issue on the beta group for awhile but - very unusual for Mark - have gotten no response, most likely because there have been so many *other* problems with search that have taken priority. There is a new search function that's not live yet - you can access it by clicking on "test new search" after hitting the search button - but it just solves some of the other problems. I think we're currently on approximately the third iteration of search. It does get better each time. :)

Search options
I just moved a group over from Yahoo and have had several complains on the message search option.
I noticed myself that the search option does not take into account the senders name or email so when searching for a particular persons post it returns nothing of use, only a bunch of non-related emails. Is there a fix to this issue, or is it being worked on? -- Cecil - k5nwa |

Is there any detail information on any of the above items directlyI'm not sure if it is what you're looking for, but GMF's wiki does have this how-to article on using the Database: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Databases Shal |
Re: Problem with creating # hashtag
#hashtags
Jack,
So played about a bit by simplifying the tile - such as - Stans-QuizInteresting. In my test group the hashtag was accepted with a hyphen, but not an apostrophe. Now I could edit back to my original #Stan's-Quiz and accepted andMore than strange, the discrepancy between what's allowed when you create the hashtag versus when you edit it seems like it must be a bug. So I'm CC'ing this to support. I'm inclined to think that both hyphen and apostrophe should be legal, as they are normally used in word construction rather than as word separators. The principle of least astonishment favors them both as well, I think. With the possible exception of people who sometimes omit the lefthand space when using hyphen as a substitute for a dash- like this. Shal |
Re: Problem with creating # hashtag
#hashtags
Interesting one this. As mentioned on my initial Post, the title of the Tag I was trying to create #Stan's-Quiz - illegal. So played about a bit by simplifying the tile - such as - Stans-Quiz - still illegal, Stans_Quiz - still illegal, StanQuiz - still illegal, Stan - legal ?and subsequently #Stan created. Great. Now I could edit back to my original #Stan's-Quiz and accepted and working fine. Very strange?
And thanks for the responses. Jack(;>J |

Re: new subscriber cannot send message to group
There still are a couple of us around who cut our teeth first on big, monster vacuum tube computers with binary on off switches as our first introduction to programming.
The programmers used to come up to Poughkeepsie to use our computers in production test to debug the first Fortran package and when they had it kinda working they gave us two card decks, one was the Fortran program and the second was the game of NIM. Then Symbolic Assembler came about, wow! That's when I decided it was easier to use software to diagnose bugs than to stab the thing to death ?with ?a scope probe. -- Bob Bellizzi The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation |
Re: Editing the Wiki
LeeAnne,
Did something happen to the copy of previous versions of wiki pages.Near the upper right of the page it should say something like "Last edited Jul 13 - 43 revisions" - the number and word "revisions" should be a link to the list of them. There should always be at least one revision - the creation of the page counts as one. If you're not seeing a count of revisions there then you may need help from support. Likewise if you see the link but it doesn't bring you to the list. If you see the list, but it shows only one revision it is possible that one of the mods mistakenly "cleaned up" by deleting the other revisions. I think there also used to be a fail safe to stop two people workingAlas no. At present the rule is "last save wins". I've asked on beta@ for some protections there. I'd prefer that the system automatically merge parallel edits. Or failing that at least have a "claimed" indicator such as is done for editing pending messages. Shal |
Editing the Wiki
Hi all
Did something happen to the copy of previous versions of wiki pages. When editing a wiki page there used to be a list of the versions that each editor did. ?I finally have some mods using the wiki but can't see their changes. ?I think there also used to be a fail safe to stop two people working at the same time? ? Or am I out in left field again? ?(Does anyone know the way to the parking lot?)? -- -LeeAnne ?Archivist |
Re: new subscriber cannot send message to group
Bob,
The majority of our group ...I well understand that. The unfortunate fact is that if the user typo'd the group name then the message they get back is generated by their own email service, with whatever degree of clarity or lack thereof that service employed. These "bounce" messages are often referred to as "mailer-daemon" messages, because many system use that as the user name that sends the notice. In my case: From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <mailer-daemon@...>Gmail happens to format the body of the notice rather cleanly, with a big box at the top announcing that the message was not delivered, and immediately below that the response from Groups.io. The response from Groups.io is relatively clear: 550 The group 'beeta' does not exist. You are subscribed to theThe list of one's subscriptions is a particularly novel idea by Groups.io - and likely very useful to new or naive users as it provides the correct spelling to post to their groups. However, I've seen other email service's notices of this type, and they do often bury the actual response code and text in a sea of gobbledygook. So I'm sympathetic to the problem that a member might never see or understand Groups.io's 550 response. One often must take the lead and simply ask questions and describingAbsolutely agree. Been there, done that. In the days before semiconductors, yea in the days of punched cards,You're preaching to the choir. I've submitted programs for execution on punched cards, and punched tape, and magnetic tape. But always to a machine built with semiconductors. In the some cases discrete semiconductors rather than ICs, but still solid-state. When I was in kindergarten my father submitted programs, probably on punched cards, to a machine built with vacuum tubes. But I never saw that machine, just heard the stories. Shal |
