I think this is a good opportunity to mention this.? The GMF group is an unofficial support group for the site.? As far as we know, no one from Groups.io management monitors anything here.? We're a user-to-user group that has learned how things work, just like any new member should.? Some of us have been here since almost the beginning.? We've been able to learn things as they're added or changed, so it's been a gradual process for us.? For folks new to the site, things can seem a bit overwhelming with all the improvements that have been made and the options that are available.

I do not see where I can choose what to transfer from yahoogroups - please be more specific.

Thanks,

Re: Is IO charging a fee now

One thing to keep in mind: "There is no such thing as a free lunch". Groups.io is not ad-supported and your privacy is in no way impacted by your use of groups.io or your membership at groups.io. Unlike Yahoo, which is ad-supported and uses your personal information to pay for the services you receive(d) there.

So, expecting Mark to pay for all of us to continue using this service (which is far superior to Yahoo Groups in my opinion), is not reasonable. The challenge is to come up with an equitable way to share the cost of the services. It appears to me that Mark is testing those waters now. I'm certainly prepared to support a reasonable cost for these services.

Here is my update, use it as a benchmark, I have migrated 2 groups.? The first took 5 days (Weekend included) from the request to completion.? The second I started on Saturday, and completed this morning (EST).? The email I got is included below to show that it was completed.?
Both, I had upgraded to "paid" before I started any of the steps.? I have a third that I started yesterday but I mixed up the order of things to see how it does or does not work.
One of mine had several failures on the Photo section - common issues on the Yahoo side - so I created a second migration of just the photos.? The request was completed within 4 hours.? There were several duplicates created of the photos that came over in the first wave.? But I got several of the missing ones back.?
Lesson:? Check your data before and after you do the migration.

Jim -- "Last week" is a pretty broad range, thus it's hard for us to gauge if your wait time has been excessive.

To check status, follow the instructions in this message:?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948. If the status box at the top of the page says your invitation has been received but not accepted yet, then you're probably fine...you just have to keep waiting. If it says something else, report back here and we'll try to give you further guidance.

With all that's going on with the Yahoo transfers, I'm sure things are backed up a bit.? A few years ago there was a surge in transfers and the wait time got up to around 2 weeks.? Having said that, an Enterprise account should be the highest priority available.? Sending more than one invitation can actually slow things down.? Just check the status at the top of your transfer page to make sure the invitation was received at GIO, then wait (as patiently as you can.)

I do not consider this a support issue.?? I would feel differently if every group were up and running with no problems, and I was still waiting for my dance partner with my top hat in my hand, but this is uncharted territory for you guys.

That's the email server for Groups.io? It looks like the MagicSpam being used by the site you're sending the invitations to needs to be updated.? Most of the other filters have learned that Groups.io is a reputable service, but there are bumps now and then.? There's nothing Groups.io can do about it, other than maintain their reputation.? You (or the recipient) will need to contact that service to correct the problem.

thanks,

Re: HOW TO CHECK TRANSFER STATUS (was: transfer problem)

Thanks. I get it now! We need to be patient because there must be a huge list of sites waiting to transfer. There is actually quite a bit of time left for all of this. One thing I understand from the pricing change notice is that groups.io will endeavor to grab all of our content before Yahoo deletes it. There is time after that to import that data into groups.io. Status messages are very helpful.

Linda J and other,

I think one of the problems people may be having is with the terms. In step 2, you start the transfer process. This tells groups.io that you are wanting to do a transfer. Then you do the invite from Yahoo Groups. Then they join the group on Yahoo. You promote them to moderator. The next step is 'Begin'
the transfer itself.

It is the terms, it sounds like the concept of start or begin are used twice in the sequence. The first time you are 'starting the transfer process' but the second time, step 6, you 'starting the transfer'. Subtle difference, but I think many users are hanging up on the steps.

Re: When should I be concerned? #howlong

As long as systematically we are good, I am satisfied.? I'm not worrying at this point, I'm just... curious.?? :D

I am running interference on eager beavers creating their own IDs on GIO.? I just wanted to have some plausibility if I got pushback on asking them to delete their IDs here (I don't feel like trying to merge IDs.)

We thankfully have some generous contributors that have -er- contributed so I wasn't stuck for the fee, plus late in the game we got a corporate sponsor who agreed to underwriting the original fee.? Haven't yet told him of the 100% increase, nor about the 100% grease that's available for the wheels.?? Those will be discussions for after the group is up and running.
