Who Can Upgrade a Group

What type groups.io Group membership is necessary to *pay* for an upgrade from Basic to Premium?

Can members?

Can Moderators?

Or, only Owners?

Obviously, I've got a problem trying to help a friend...

Re: Notice of Pricing Change

So then -- what happens if you applied to become a Premium member a few days before 21 October, but have not heard back from Mark yet, and your group's transfer is still waiting for groups.io to start it?

Thanks,
Andy

Is IO charging a fee now

Nina Banks

Is IO going to charge a fee to use it's service??? Is it going the way of Yahoo groups??

Thanks
Nina

Re: Notice of Pricing Change

But what happens when the year paid for is already up? Do they get to renew @110 or will they have to pay 220?

I read this to mean that if you are already at Premium -- or upgrade to Premium before tomorrow at noon EDT -- your price will not increase.

Could you please update this to include the steps required to transfer to subgroups?

Re: HOW TO CHECK TRANSFER STATUS (was: transfer problem)

Linda J,

You sent the invite. Did the status on the screen change to 'we've received
the invite, when respond to it and become a member, make it a moderator' or
words to that effect. Due to the workload, and this is a manual step for
groups.io, I've seen it go from 1-12 hours to over a day lately. If you
don't see the "we received the invite", which I think is automated like I
saw it within an hour or so, then suspect a typo on the invite.

Dan -- Based on Mark's recent message (/g/GroupManagersForum/message/20002), this may be more problematical than it's been in the past.
It used to be that transfers would be queued up at the "accept the invitation" stage. Once the invitation was accepted and you gave the go-ahead, things would proceed quickly (within 24 hours).
Now, it seems that once the go-ahead is given, things may NOT go so quickly. This is a direct result of the incredible number of groups that are asking for transfers right now. Data is being collected from Yahoo as fast as ever, but importing to your group could take some additional time. To wit:
"Assuming that Yahoo doesn¡¯t have any server issues, we believe that we¡¯ll be able to export all data out of Yahoo before they delete all the data. However, in order to maintain a high level of service to our existing customers, we cannot import groups into our service as fast as we can export them out of Yahoo. There may be some delay before we can import all groups. If you wish to have your transfer prioritized, the group transfer page allows you to pay an additional one-time fee of $200 (this will go live at 9AM Pacific Time, October 22)."
Recently, I've noticed occasional situations where groups.io would briefly act like it was running maintenance or the message base search indexing would lag behind. There's only so much load that the existing hardware can service in a timely fashion, and it doesn't make sense to upgrade it when the whole situation is going to calm back down within 7 weeks.
Bottom line:? Depending on how much lag time you can tolerate and how deep your pockets are, it may make sense to pony up the two extra c-notes.

OK, thanks for the details - I think we'll take our chances :-). We tend to be pretty low volume at this time of year (it's a sailing group and most of our members are still out sailing . . . .), so a few days lag shouldn't hurt.

We also have a complete off-line backup of the Yahoo group (and I'll make another once we turn off posting), so we could theoretically import stuff manually if needed.

"Deep pockets" unfortunately doesn't apply :-))

Thanks Michael, sounds like a similar use case but yours are sessions all within one overarching organisation?
No organization, other than they are all sessions and groups I like to play with.

And to get clear; you don't have a main group with subgroups due to the clunkier email addresses, so you have an entirely separate account for each genre? Is that right?
Each session or group has its own email List and website ("group") - all are free Basic groups.
Some people play in more than one session or group, but not everyone knows each other.
I set up 3 groups for the large Contra Dance band I play in (about current 40 members) now in its 50th season: Current members, former members, and Dance Friends (for our Dance announcements).

A Groups.io 'account' is an email address of a Member (I have several email addresses and therefore several accounts).
One account (email address) can 'own' more than one group, and belong to many groups.
Groups.io groups are not accounts, each has a 'payment plan' (if the group is a Premium or Enterprise group) and a number of group email addresses to (subscribe, post, contact owner, change email delivery status, leave group, etc).

So apart from the clunky email address of subgroups,
One of my groups is for the Falmouth Fiddlers, with the group posting email address of [email protected]
If it has subgroups that address changes to: [email protected] and subgroups become: [email protected]
[email protected] still would work as an alias, at least it currently does.

I believe subgroups should leave the main group email address unchanged and subgroups should be: [email protected]

would they work for me;
Yes, either can work for you

ie , is it possible for subgroups to be independent of each other, with separate members & moderators?
I have no subgroups, but each has its own webpage linked to the main group.
Subgroups can have different members and Moderators.
All subgroup members are required (and automatically) are members of the main group.
You could restrict or prohibit member posting to the main group so that they can only post to their subgroup(s).
Members can be restricted to only access their main group and subgroup(s) webpages, and each webpage can have different settings.

The only advantage for me of a main and subgroup structure would be to eliminate the occasional 'cross-posting'.
Many organizations have a main group for all, and subgroups for their Board and committees.

You, no doubt, have seen today's announcement, so if you need to transfer archives and/or large numbers of members ACT NOW

I sent this to three large YahooGroups I am only a 'Member' of:
Groups.io (because it is being slammed with YahooGroup conversions) will double it's prices on 9AM Pacific Time, October 22
and has imposed a deadline of midnight, December 1 Pacific Time for all new transfer requests to be received.

My intent is not to be pushy, however:
I suggest setting up a Groups.io group and paying $110 now
And initiate the transfer ASAP (before Dec 1)

In your case seeking an alternative to BCC'ing, I would do this step 1) now:
1) Set up a free Basic individual groups for each BCC list now (just in case) - it only take a minute or two apiece.
I recommend choosing:
a short "Group Email Address" e.g. [email protected] for the Falmouth Fiddlers Association
"Visibility": "Group <or not> listed in Directory, private messages
"Create Sub Groups": "Owner Only"
2) Take your time once created to customize your Group settings.
3) When satisfied then announce the Group to the BCC'd email addresses
and Invite existing BCC'd email addresses to join: either with the Invite process or by having them send an email to <your Group Email [email protected]>
[It is [email protected] for the Falmouth Fiddlers]
Alternately you could upgrade for 1 month $10 today ($20 tomorrow) per group and Direct Add them. I don't think you need to do this.
4) Managing a group will take some work (and some hand-holding), but it is better than BCCs in my opinion, plus you get the benefit of archives of various types.

Michael

To make sure this doesn't happen, you should halt posting on the YG just before you give the go ahead for the transfer to start.

Message "gap" during transfer?

Dan Rawson

I'm in the process of transferring our Yahoo group and I was wondering about messages to the group that are sent _after_ I make the transfer account a moderator in Yahoo, but _before_ the "Your transfer is done" confirmation. Do I have to do anything to make sure that there are no left-over messages on Yahoo that didn't get transferred?

Thanks!

In that case, you can stay on that plan (grandfathered in) as was mentioned in the announcement since you can't transfer a group with that one.? If you're planning to do any transfers, you can get on the annual plan before tomorrow for $110 or wait and pay the $220.? The extra $200 is only for the groups being transferred that would like an elevated priority.

It also specifically says that free groups will stay free for now.
