Re: Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

Could I get a sanity check on why groups.io originally decided to use the +owner convention instead of the -owner one used with Y!G?

I seem to recall it was pretty convoluted, along the lines of:

-- Groups.io wanted to support subgroups (whereas Yahoo Groups does not)
-- Subgroups are implemented via subdomain addressing
-- Hostnames cannot have an underscore, thus
-- We need to use hyphens instead if we want to create a compound subgroup name
-- With the hyphen usurped for another purpose, the plus (+) sign was implemented for +owner messages

Is that pretty close, or did I dream all that?

Don't celebrate yet. All I have managed to do at BT is to get the moderators to refer the problem to their email team. I have not yet heard back from them, so I don't know if they are doing anything.

Re: Procedure for changing Groups-IO Group Manager

Bill,

What is the procedure for changing out the Groups-IO Manager of a
group.
What Bruce said.

The group can have more than one owner, so you could stay on as an owner indefinitely while the new guy "learns the ropes".

In fact staying on as a backup owner is a common recommendation -- a group may have two or more individuals designated with the Owner role, just in case one becomes unexpectedly incapacitated. That will allow the remaining owner(s) to carry on, and promote a replacement as needed.

Re: Admin members list shows 2 more members than the public directory

Ceridwen,

The two members missing from the Directory list both replied to an invitation by me, the owner.? One shows an "unconfirmed" symbol, the other ?does not.

The one flying the NC badge did not reply to your Invitation, if you mean that you used the group's Invite feature. If he/she had that would have confirmed his/her address. He/she must have requested membership to your group via web or email instead. Have a look in the Sent Invitations tab of the Invite page, or your group's Activity log, to confirm this.

The NC member must reply to a confirmation request notice from Groups.io. You can send him/her another one via their page in the Members list -- down at the bottom there will be a Send Confirmation Email button.

?
I have not received requests for confirmation as I did with the remaining members and there's nothing visible anywhere that allows me to do that.

I'm not sure what you mean by a confirmation to you, the owner/mod. Maybe just the Email when a member joins/leaves this group or the Email when there are members needing approval. But a person responding to an Invitation doesn't need approval, the Invitation itself does that, and the first is just a notice that requires no action on your part.

Re: Messages to +owner being wrongly routed to the whole group

Congratulations, Peter, on getting BT to do anything.? I've never managed it.? Your suggestions seem eminently sensible.? Yahoo (for what it is worth) use the form <group>-owner and I never heard of a problem.

The other Peter.

Although RFC 2821 says "don't mess with the "local part" of the destination email address", and the + sign is listed in another RFC as being a legal character in a local part, there are suggestions around that a + in an email address isn't a good idea and there ARE hosts (not just the ones we have found) that don't like + signs and will remove any they find passing through.

I can see a sequence of actions that groups.io could follow to change from a + to some other character, for example a dot, without risking unwanted side-effects.? Dots are well-established as separators within local parts and should be well behaved. So the +owner command could be replaced by the email address [email protected] or perhaps [email protected] Similarly with the other email commands.

1) Introduce, in the process that currently parses the local part of incoming emails, an ADDITIONAL process that accepts a dot as an identifier of an email command which is currently identified by a +. This process should merely log the detection of a dot and do nothing else.

2) Introduce this feature without announcement and leave it running for a while.? Check that the above log doesn't collect anything nasty.

3) Swap the above log operation to one which implements the existing email commands (.i.e. those operations currently identified by a +).

4) Inform the beta test group and get them to try and break it.? If they don't, then ...

5) Announce the change and update the documentation, but leave the + versions in place.? Users would migrate to the new form eventually.

6) Eventually remove the + version, replacing it with a message directing the user to the documentation.

7) Later still, remove even that message and ignore the + version.

I am not a network programmer (my field is DSP) but I would like to urge groups.io to consider something like this.? My intuition tells me that this problem may not be limited to btinternet.com/synchronoss.net, and we may never convince the entire internet that they are doing it wrong.? groups.io users are a tiny minority.

Re: Edit without sending for regular group members?

Each person can edit their own posts from the groups.io site. Under the message there are 3 bars by the word "More." When that is selected, "Edit Message" is an option about half-way down the list. After choosing that, they can correct the message.
Below the corrected message they can choose from two blue buttons - "Save and Send to Group," or "Save Without Sending." In the second case, the changed message will remain on the groups.io site rather than the original message, but no new one will be sent out. If it's a crucial change, they can choose the Send to Group option.

[Mod note: As Bruce replied, the Save Without Sending button is available only to mods/owners]

I think you're trying to solve a problem that shouldn't exist.? The whole point of RFCs and other standards is so that all services "play nicely together."

BTW, no one from Groups.io management monitors this group.? You could try submitting your suggestion on the (official suggestion box of the site), but I wouldn't expect any changes.

On the web UI go to Topics view. Identify the thread / topic you want to freeze - or more correctly Lock - and find the arrow in the grey box just to the right of the date.

Click on the arrow, and then click on Lock Topic.

Job done.

In your instructions you should let them know that even if they've never visited the Groups.io web pages before they already have a Groups.io account - it was set up automatically when they joined your group. This means that when visiting the site for the first time they should use the Log In link, not the Sign Up link.

The Log In link will bring them to a page that asks for their email address and password, but just below the Password box is a Forgot your password, or don't have one yet? link which they can use to have Groups.io send them a login by email message.

They should be careful to enter the same email address they used for their subscription to your group. The footer of each group message they've received shows that address next to the Unsubscribe link.
