Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

Last week's change log (oops):

This week's change log:

The next #changelog will be sent on August 9th.
Mark's on vacation.

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: You can now view past member +Owner messages.
The Past Member list is a Premium feature.

Comments about these are welcome:

CHANGE: In the activity log, we sometimes truncate long entries. We
now have 'more' links to show the full entry.
NEW: Added new chat API endpoints: /newchat, /updatechat, /getchats,
/deletechat, /joinchat, /leavechat.
NEW: Added /getevent API endpoint.
BUGFIX: In some cases when someone RSVPs to an event but is
waitlisted, an incorrect activity log entry was generated.
NEW: Added /rsvp endpoint to set/update an event RSVP.
CHANGE: Previously, the /getsubgroups endpoint would return group
objects that represented group aliases. It now longer returns these.
CHANGE: In the /directadd endpoint, if a subgroupname or subgroupid is
specified that points to a group alias, the pointed to group will be
used instead.
NEW: Added /getgroupaliases API endpoint to fetch group aliases.
INTERNAL: Split out chat websocket endpoint from the web server into a
new chat server process.
BUGFIX: We were not logging when a moderator changed a user's display
name.
INTERNAL: A lot of work to support the API/app.
BUGFIX: Links in wiki pages were unintentionally opening in new
browser windows.
CHANGE: When attempting to view member only parts of a group after
you've been banned, instead of saying you were banned, we now say
'You are not a member of this group.'

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Calendar function

Dave,

My group has a calendar on it's page but I can't figure how to make it
allow me to make entries. I have moderator status.
If you have permission to access the group's Settings page, check the Permissions setting for the calendar, first in the Features section. If it says "moderators can edit" then you should be able create and edit entries.

Otherwise, as Bruce said, check that you're signed in using an account that has moderator status. You can tell by looking at the Home button at the top of the nav list on the left. It should have a light blue Mod badge. If it has no badge then you are signed in using an account which is a member.

Re: Pending Member

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thank You Bruce.

When I look at admin>members the 2nd email address she used is pending.? So, if I then go to the pending top left, members.? There is the other email address.? So, I suppose it does not matter one way or the other as far as her being approved.? It is just all so confusing to me.

Thanks again Bruce,
Doug

While that's a little frustrating, I think you're focusing on the wrong thing. User/display name can be changed at will. The email address is the only unique identifier, and is all that matters in this context.

If your logs say that you already approved her via email, it's too late for your partner to use this subscriber to get in some practice.

The second user name is pending, but the first I cannot find in the directory.? That is the one it says I approved.? So, is there a lag time between a new user gets approved and when they show in the directory?
Go to your group's Members List (Admin>Members), NOT the Directory. If anyone is in Pending status, they will show up on the first screen. To get to the people you've already approved, you may have to pull down the blue Pending menu at top left and select Members. If it already says Members, then no one is in Pending status.

By default, newest subscribers sort to the top of the resulting list. If they don't, click the Applied label at far right until it displays a downward-pointing caret. Now look in the first few entries for the email address that your partner approved. If it's there, nothing is awry. Any names you might see -- user or display -- do not matter.

I hope this helps. If not, I'm probably more confused than you are.

Regards,
Bruce

Re: Website name change

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Mick,

Is it possible to change the name of your Group?
Not just the Home Page layout but the actual IO Groups name.

Yes you can.

What most people refer to as a group's name is the group-specific part of the Group Email Address:
Screenshot
        of GMF Settings

That name is also used in the group's web address, for example.
/g/GroupManagersForum

Note that changing the group's name (addresses) does have predictable consequences for the members of the group. Please read GMF's wiki page on Renaming a Group for some considerations, and post again if you have more questions or any comments about the wiki page.

Douglas -- It is entirely possible for someone to delete/withdraw his subscription while it's still in Pending status. While I agree that's the most likely scenario, I suggest checking your Activity Log to see if you can glean any more information.

Hope this helps,

Re: Seeking a Debtor or Senders Anonymous Group

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Monty,

I am new to this site and finding it a challenge to locate an Online Debtors or Spenders Anonymous Group on the site.

Have a look at the top for the Find or Create a Group link (red arrow):
Screenshot
        showing Find group link

That brings you to a directory of groups. From there you can use the search box to search for groups on your subject.

Happy hunting!

David -- The first thing to check is if "Calendar" even shows up among the options on the left-side menu bar. If not, the group has the calendar disabled in settings...one of the Owners will have to first go into Admin>Settings>Features and enable it.

Second thing to check is the Home button at top left. If there a blue "Mod" badge adjacent to the word Home? If not, you may still be a Moderator of the group, but not with the email address that you logged in with. Log back out of groups.io and log in with the email address that has Moderator permissions.

Assuming all is okay to this point, adding events involves clicking on the Calendar tab at left, scrolling to the bottom of the resulting page, and clicking the Add Event button.

I hope something in there helps. Please let us know if you need any further assistance or have any follow-up questions.

Regards,
Bruce

Re: Markdown is not rendered online #markdown

Ond?ej,

The issue that I am raising is that I would like the groups.io web
interface to also render such markdown plain text emails properly.
I think that's what Mark was alluding to, with his reference to a parameter (markup=markdown) added to the Content-Type field of a text/plain message body. For example:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed; markup=markdown

Maybe he meant only that Groups.io adds that parameter to outbound messages when composed in markdown, but I thought he implied it would work for messages received with that parameter as well.

I don't have MailMate so I've never tried it. I don't know if it is possible to coerce Thunderbird into generating that parameter on outbound message bodies.

Just to clarify, I disabled html email in my group, as I only want
plain text emails.
I'm surprised that works with the Groups Web Poster - its method is to render the markdown into a text/HTML part for the outbound message. But maybe the fact this works for you implies that the parameter is generated outbound and used inbound.

I tried using MarkDown Here in Thunderbird to create a message in markdown, and sent it to my test group, having set that group to Text Only. What came through was the text/plain part with the markdown coding displayed rather than rendered. However, the message did not have the parameter to tell Groups.io that the content was markdown, so that is not surprising:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed

Pending Member

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hello all,

Maybe someone can help me make sense of this.? My group is a restricted group.? I have had 2 member requests in the last hour.? They have both came from the same Android phone, with Tacoma, WA as where the persons phone is registered.? One of them is with a live mail email account, the other with a g-mail email address.? Only the second shows up in the group as a pending member.?

The only way I can figure this out is, the first request may have been deleted by the prospective member.

Am I missing something here??

Doug

My group has a calendar on it's page but I can't figure how to make it allow me to make entries. I have moderator status.

Undoubtedly true, but...

I'm pretty sure the only private messages currently retained are invitations/direct add notices (via the activity log) and +owner messages (via the corresponding button on the subscriber's page). And an argument could be made that such messages are not really "private," inasmuch as they are accessible to all Moderators, and individuals can be rotated in and out of those positions.
I haven't comprehensively tested the above assertion, but I suspect it is also perfectly true. However, it does leave gaps in the system. An Owner or Moderator might have the need to message a subscriber warning them of a possible return to being fully moderated if some unwelcome conduct persists, and while any such message can be Bcc: All Moderators there is no permanent record of its existence. Even if the message is based on a proforma Member Notice there is no Activity Log record of its having been sent. OTOH a Resend Pending Subscription is issued, that is logged.

In a similar vein a +Owner message is logged & stored, but any reply to it is neither even if it is not strictly private.

So perhaps Alex does have a point, at least in some circumstances.

Chris

Re: Delete event sends CANCELLED EVENT notification to group #calendar #cal-notice

Any ideas here? This is the most serious problem I've had, since the cancelation went out to 180 people about a real event, and now I'm pretty nervous about using the calendar ?lest I ever need to delete a dupe record again

i also don't ?understand HOW I ended up with duplicate events from just editing my 1 event multiple times (because repeatedly when I re-opened the ?record, ?the start end times had reverted to the default hours so I had to edit/update again mysteriously resulting in 3 records)

For context I'm a database consultant with a database consulting firm and formerly an IT manager and also a DBA so I don't think this is "finger trouble"!! ... I hope!!!

Saving Private Messages (was: Vanishing email)

Alex -- Unlike Yahoo and some others, you create an account here via an already-existing email address; your personal inbox/outbox resides there. To provide private email service would increase server load and storage costs, and the current funding approach might become unsustainable. Perhaps that will change when the groups.io app is rolled out...at that point such private messages could be stored on your own device.?

Copying and pasting from other (more sophisticated?) word-processing applications as strange corruptions can occur due to non-compatible Special Character and formatting coding.
