Re: Lock or Moderate on Hashtag

Glenn,
What I am wondering is if there an automated way of handling this problem. For example, if a particular hashtag, like #resolution or something was used, the thread would be locked from the start. People could reply to the sender, but not the group.
Donald's solution looks like the best approach for a case like this.
However, to do exactly what you want, you can create (or use a previously created) a hashtag and edit it.
Editing the hashtag will have lots of options such as:
- Locked (any topic with this hashtag will be immediately locked)
- Moderated (any reply to this topic will need to be aproved by a mod or an owner)
- Topic duration (you will be able to set a period for topics with this hashtag and, after this period, decide whether they will be locked or deleted)
...

Nonetheless, based on what you said,
People could reply to the sender, but not the group.?
I'd think the more desired option in this case is the "Reply to".
With this option, any reply to any topic using this hashtag can be sent to the sender, to the moderator, both to the sender and to the group (...) depending on your choice.

Hope this helps :)

This may be a different way of approaching it, but how about creating
a poll? The idea would be everyone interested would vote FOR (or YES)
the proposed resolution or petition. You would either expect no
opposers or just not count them since when signing a petition only
those FOR the petition would sign it in the first place.

This may or may not work for you. I just thought of it but it may not
be a solution that will give you what you're looking for.

Lock or Moderate on Hashtag

Glenn Glazer

We have a group where people frequently submit resolutions or petitions to be signed. As one might imagine, each time this happens, it is followed by a slew of "me, too" posts from each list member indicating their desire to sponsor or sign on.

What I am wondering is if there an automated way of handling this problem. For example, if a particular hashtag, like #resolution or something was used, the thread would be locked from the start. People could reply to the sender, but not the group.

Thoughts and strategies welcome.

Best,

Glenn

If she's using Firefox, have her update her Firefox browser. In Firefox she can just go to Help > About and go from there. Firefox has had a known problem with certificates in the past week and patches and a full upgrade are available.

Re: Difficulty signing in

Yvette,

"I have been offline for 6 months, and now when I try to get into the website, my browser is blocking the .io website - the security certificate expired in 2018.

As Frances mentioned, the Groups.io's site security certificate is not expired, but the prior one expired in 2018. So perhaps her browser (or other software) has cached the old certificate and failed to retrieve the updated one.

Or, perhaps her browser has an old set of root certificates and it is one of the certificates "up the chain" that is actually expired. One thing to check might be what browser she is using, and whether it is up to date. Also what OS, and is it up to date.

I can't see a way to update this and can't get into the website to try to contact io themselves!!!"

The browser is supposed to take care of fetching up-to-date certificates as needed. I'm not very expert in how this can go wrong so I'm unsure what steps to take. Maybe hard refresh of the page (Ctrl+F5) or flushing the page from her browser history (cache) will trigger it.

If she forgot her password (which is most likely after 6 months), how do we get her to the sign in page?

The page she needs is the login page:
On that page she can use the link for forgotten password, or the button to log in by email. Once she gets past the certificate issue. There may be a way she can tell her browser to proceed to the site despite the "expired" certificate.

Right now she can't even get to that because the page is being blocked - most likely by her anti-virus?

I'm not entirely sure that an anti-virus product is involved, but I suppose it is possible.

Re: Difficulty signing in

Thanks for checking Frances.? I was thinking it might be a problem with the person's anti-virus not recognizing groups.io or something like that.? I checked that the person is still a member on the group and she does show up in the list.? However, I am not an owner or moderator on this group so can't check other things here (I was asked to help because the moderator wasn't sure what to tell the person and they knew I was an owner of another group).? I know the person still receives the digest because that is how she sent the message in to the group.? If she forgot her password (which is most likely after 6 months), how do we get her to the sign in page?? Right now she can't even get to that because the page is being blocked - most likely by her anti-virus?
I don't know what anti-virus she is using but can send her a message to ask.? I am not that knowledgeable regarding different anti-viruses so don't know how to tell her to whitelist the groups.io page (if that is what is needed).

To edit a subscriber's member record, go to Admin>Members, find the record (using the search field or by paging through), then click anywhere on the record to open it. All of the fields on the resulting page are editable...even the email address is editable if you have a Premium/Enterprise group.

A subscriber's?profile (i.e.: the information that appears in the member Directory) is not Owner-editable. If any erroneous information appears here, the subscriber will have to update it. Have them click on Subscription followed by the "Group Profile" button at the top of the resulting page.

Hope this helps,

Hi Yvette,

I checked with Firefox browser - clicked on the padlock, etc. SSL until September 9, 2020.

Perhaps the wrong URL? Have you checked whether this person is still a member? Look in Admin, Members. If she isn't, you can send an invitation. Or perhaps the person has forgotten their password.?

My guess is either it's the browser or the AV software that's at
fault. Here's where to start to determine if that's the issue.

Have the member try different web browsers (Edge, Firefox, Chrome,
Opera), and if she gets the message on all of those, there might be a
browser plug-in from her anti-virus software that is intervening and
causing the block. If that's the case, disabling the plug-in might be
worth trying. If disabling (or removing) the plug-in works, then it's
time to change anti-virus software. If it's a plug-in issue from the
AV product installed, it may not have installed the plug-in on all
browsers. And it's possible that if a new browser is installed, a
message may pop up asking to install a plug-in for security purposes
into that new one, which I would decline for this test. AV Products
have been known to block good sites. Reporting back to the AV company
might not be a simple matter but I would try if that's the problem,
and there may be a place to over-ride the warning or block, possibly
using a small link below the warning message in the browser.

The member could temporarily disable the AV software and go to the
groups.io site and see if the block is still there. If it goes away,
time to focus on the AV software.

Some ISPs provide free anti-virus software. Some do not. The McAfee
anti-virus software Spectrum offers will remove any other similar
product and then install itself. (Having two AV products installed on
one PC may cause serious conflicts and issues, so it's OK for that to
happen.)

There are many free AV products available. I would recommend sticking
to the big ones, some of which are: Avast, AVG, Avira, Kaspersky,
Bitdefender, and there are others, too.

So I would try different browsers and disable the AV software or
plug-in (if present) and see what happens.

Donald

Oh, even easier. Edit the event to change it from an Reminder (sent before the event) to a Notice (sent when the event happens). Event Notice messages are another feature that didn't exist at the time I first set that reminder in place.

My apologies to anyone who was using the #cal-reminder hashtag to find or mute those monthly messages. Going forward it will be #cal-notice.

Re: Calendar Reminders #askmembers

Medel,

I noticed that in the calendar reminder that is being sent - phrase
"Upcoming Event:" is suddenly added in the Subject field of the email
sent to members.
As Bruce said, a recent change, announced in beta (and echoed here) in the weekly #changelog message.

Hmm... This is going to turn GMF's subscription reminder for June into:

[GMF] Upcoming Event: Group Managers Forum subscription reminder #admin - Sat, 06/01/2019 #cal-reminder

Which is more than a mouthful, but worse I wasn't using it as an "event" per se so it is also wrong (or at least semantically dubious). So maybe it is finally time for me to switch that reminder to one of the newer methods - either check the monthly box on "Guidelines" or use the new "Monthly Reminder" type of member notice.

This is a recent change to the #cal-reminder notification. I don't know the motivation for it.

Is there a way to remove the "Upcoming Event:"? in the Subject field?
Not currently. You might want to add your opinion to.
