Re: emails to group instead of sender #issue

Thanks very much for the information in this thread. I'd just like to put my feedback or there that I think the current default behavior (send to Group) leads to *very* unintuitive behavior in email clients (at least in GMail). When you get a post, the client displays it *just* using the person's name as the "from", and so just replying to that email (as opposed to replying all) one would expect it would go just to the sender, not to the whole group.

Reply -> Sender, Reply all -> whole group is what I think 99% of people would expect, and the default setting breaks that.

Subscribe form for subgroups? #subgroups #subscription

Is it possible to have a subscribe form for subgroups?? ?That "subscribe to our group" you can embed on a website from the "promote" page on the main group.? I just assumed that same page would be on the subgroups and was surprised that it wasn't.? ?I thought the whole idea was that those subgroups could be managed semi-independently.? Can that code be tweaked for a subgroup? - or is there any other workaround?? I didn't realize that almost nothing can be embedded in a website like you can with Google groups.? ?Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Re: Invite not working

Barry,

Of course agree though in that post, I also included a screen shot with the specifics.

The message implies that believes Groups.io's outbound server to be "someone" who has sent too many messages. That service needs to be recognize that Groups.io is an email list service and not apply such a limit. Especially not one that's collective over all users of their service.

Whether they'll figure it out on their own eventually, or whether their users will need to whack them upside the head with a clue-by-four is anyone's guess.

"Also, the general term "an error message" doesn't give much clue to anyone who might bed able to help you."

Also, Bob, not sure if your advice around greater specificity with "an error message" is in response to my OP but think so? Of course agree though in that post, I also included a screen shot with the specifics. ?Thanks again, to you and everyone here, for the advice. ?We were able to solve it albeit still with some slowness using different email providers.

Re: Invite not working

Totally makes sense and thanks for the suggestion on the googleapps diagnostic. ?Worth noting that the receiving-network theory, with my own admittedly limited sample, might not be dispositive here. RCN is a largely national company now but, that aside, we had delays getting gmail addresses invites and confirmed as well.

Re: Invite not working

Groups.io is pretty fast emitting email.? It's the path and final receiving network that are the issue.
There are applications that you can help you find where the delay(s) actually occur.
Also, the general term "an error message" doesn't give much clue to anyone who might bed able to help you.

I would be very surprised if groups.io failed to send the invitation immediately. Paste the message header of the delayed invitation into the analyzer found at?. This will tell you where it got held up.

I believe that some mail servers with limited capacity delay delivery of group messages for no other reason than they originate from the .io top-level domain.

Re: Invite not working

For whatever it's worth, we solved the same problem (mine had the error code associated with an RCN email address) two ways. First, more time did do the trick. ?But, at more than an hour or two, I'm still a little surprised it would take that long to work its way through groups.io. ?I'd guess it should be much more immediate than that? ?Separately, had the subscribing member use another, more mainstream email address and that invite was received in about 15-20 minutes.

?

I'm not sure what to think but, for whatever reason, there's some slowness with invites and email addresses confirmed as valid and responsive outside the groups.io platform?

Re: Invite not working

Michael,

?
I too am having group member invitations not be received.
?
Click on the Sent Invitations tab of your group's Invite page.
?
If the Status for those two says "Sent" then have those invitees check their email Spam folder or other places that their email service may have put the invitation.
?
If the Status says "Failed" it should also include a response code and text from the invitee's email service. Feel free to post that response here if you have questions about it.

But back to your suggestion - I know you know where the suggestion box is and how to use it.

Indeed, and I'll be glad to make a suggestion there... but I don't think I've ever seen the full notice given when "too many" people are invited to a group. Is it a banner seen on-line following inviting "too many" or is it an emailed notice? Could someone who has a copy either post it here or directly to me?

Thank you.

Re: Invite not working

I too am having group member invitations not be received.? I sent out 4 of them and 2 of them said they did not receive the invitations although regular email to those same addresses seem to work.? I have sent duplicate invites to the two who said they didn't get it and so far no indication they received it.

Check your Calendar settings for the subgroup.? The settings for a subgroup are pretty much independent of those for the main group.

Re: Calendar Feed Behavior When Removing a Member from Subgroup

Short answer, Idunno, but actually is this an interesting question is a couple of contexts..
Scenario 1:? BobbySue not wanting the cal anymore if she self-unsubscribes from List-A.
Scenario 2:? BobbySue has been removed from a list by the owner/moderator for whatever reason and should also immediately be unsubscribed from the List-A cal for a very good reason.

Either example could have significant implications if it is a sensitive list, but in the second case I could see that being a big issue for a security or governing board list for example.

I always send from my own email address as most of my list members aren't very savvy, so might not know the list owner address is me, but they all know my private email address. In addition, I don't use the groups.io web interface any more than I have to :)

So far, no bounces, or responses, from the private emails I sent - if those emails were just recently added to the bounce list. (However, I only sent those private messages yesterday evening, so they might have been received but not responded to yet.) I have one yahoo address that's been bouncing for a while with the same message of the mailbox being disabled, and my private message to her also bounced.

An interesting thought! As chance would have it we both had related posts in the moderation queue at the same time; you have possibly read it already but in case you haven't see this post on the subject of recent "bulk" additions to the Yahoo bounce list.?

I would sincerely hope that this isn't a case of "hostile action" on the part of Yahoo but if private messages from you aren't being bounced it certainly constitutes grounds for suspicion.

Perhaps more to the point have you had responses to your messages, or just "no bounces"? And have those private messages been via Groups.io or from your own email address?

I hope a moderator sees this amendment :)

I'm not getting bounces from the PRIVATE messages sent to at least two members so far, though the bounce from the groups.io bounce probe was practically instantaneous. So maybe Yahoo is blacklisting groups.io in a different way?

I'm still working on bounces and have had quite a few additional Yahoo addresses added to it just since yesterday.? My process is to email the address privately - and usually that gets through regardless of the domain that's bouncing - explaining that I'll be sending a bounce probe shortly, what email address it's coming from, the subject line, and how/why to respond (I created a template this morning to make that easier).? I go to this trouble because many of my group's members aren't all that tech savvy, but we value their membership as they are savvy in the group's area of interest.? In many cases, I get a response back from the member.
But in some cases I've been getting this error code from some of the Yahoo bounces:? This mailbox is disabled (554.30). Shal said "let 'em go" in an earlier email on this error message.? However, though my research says those accounts with such a message have been deleted because the person hasn't used it in more than a year, and in at least one case, I know that's not true - I have an email from that member, sent to me privately from the subscribed email address, in my inbox from less than a year ago.
Again, I know this is a Yahoo/Verizon problem, not groups.io, but if anyone has suggestions on how to deal with it other than calling all the people with this issue, I'd appreciate it.? You can email me privately at <holly@...>

As some have mentioned in beta, clearing out accounts that haven't been signed in for over a year has been a longstanding policy at Yahoo, but only intermittently enforced.
I know this thread is a bit "elderly" but I spotted the other day that there appeared to be a lot of Yahoo addresses listed as Bouncing in the Activity Log of the group I moderate. A bit more investigation has revealed the following.

  • The group in question has 742 members with Yahoo addresses listed.
  • The group has a total of 256 members listed as bouncing
  • Of those 256, 184 have Yahoo addresses
  • Last time I checked (quite some time ago) there were just over 100 addresses bouncing, but I did not investigate further at the time
  • The bulk addition to the (Yahoo) bouncing list seems to have occurred over the period 16th - 22nd March. I haven't counted them but there are defintely over 100 of them, with occasional other email addresses listed as well.
  • Over the same time period there were about 15 "Unbounced" members, but there were no Yahoo addresses listed amongst them

So I strongly suspect that Shal's?It seems that Yahoo is doing some spring cleaning of dormant accounts is right on the button.

Chris?

Re: reached limit of new members

Jim,

I'm thinking it would be a very good idea if the answer to this repetitive ... question were contained within the message sent to an Owner/Moderator who invites "too many" people at once.

I haven't seen that message in a long time, but this sounds like a good idea to me. Mark may be reluctant to say anything that sounds like a commitment to a timeframe, but hopefully you or he can come up with something agreeably vague.

Does anyone have a sample of the text? If I recall correctly it is a banner, not an email. But the notice of the review completion is an email, does anyone have a sample of that? I'm thinking these samples and some advice about Invite/Direct Add might be good fodder for GMF's wiki. Something almost as simple as the Bounce Probe example.

There is a page about Direct Add from a? Yahoo Group, but it is focused on that task, not the overall Invite or Direct Add process.

But back to your suggestion - I know you know where the suggestion box is and how to use it.

As an anti-spam measure, your invitation list will be reviewed and (presumably) approved by Groups.io. It may take a few hours for that to happen, maybe days but not usually that long.

I'm thinking it would be a very good idea if the answer to this repetitive (an aptly descriptive word, not a criticism) question were contained within the message sent to an Owner/Moderator who invites "too many" people at once.

That approach should eliminate the regularly expressed confusion over this situation.
