Re: email address from sender

Received from Shal Farley at 3/13/2019 10:35 PM UTC:
It isn't done that way because that's not what an email list is. I would argue that use cases that require privacy at the level of not even exposing an email address are likely use cases that would find a better home using a web forum or some other means of communication. Yes! All that plus complete anonymity helps to enable the bad behavior that the OP expressed a passing concern about. People who can't hide their identity will tend to be more polite than those who can. Jim H |

Ah, one more important thing to note:

Ultimately what we need are individual patch mbox files that we can apply with "git-am", that is, step (7). If groups.io allows us to download the "raw" variant of each email that they display on the WebUI, we could likely jump to step (7) at once. The rest of the steps are really just working around gnu mailman. Cheers, Stephano On Thu, Mar 14, 2019 at 7:39 AM Stephano Cetola <stephanoc@...> wrote:

Sorry for the slow responses. I'm working with folks in the UK so the timezone shift with questions is fun. :) Here is the the process my owners are trying to reproduce (how they work with GNU Mailman): (1) download the compressed mailbox file for the month I'm interested in, such as (2) decompress the file: gunzip 2019-February.txt.gz (3) make sure that my INBOX is currently empty (4) use the "mb2md" utility to split the mailbox into individual message files, and place them in my local $HOME/Maildir directory: mb2md -s 2019-February.txt (5) Now my INBOX is filled with the edk2-devel messages & threads from February 2019. I use the normal Thunderbird functionality to delete everything that I don't want. (6) The remaining messages are what I'm interested in. For example, I can save individual patches or series of patches to local *.eml files, with Ctrl+S. (7) Once I have the *.eml files, I can apply them to my local edk2 clone with "git-am". Let me know if you have any questions on that workflow. It is very helpful when trying to retrieve old patches that aren't in your personal archive somewhere. Re: Customizing home page

Being brand new to groups, I was curious to see if there is a way to customize the he page.In Settings, the Group Description field is an html editor. I believe it is the same editor used for wiki entries; and within limits, you can insert quite a few html constructs here, including images. Click on "Show Advanced Toolbar" and then "Source Code" (both at the far right of the toolbars) to get to raw html. If you insert a horizontal rule followed by an img tag with the [deprecated construct] of align="right" below it you can get the Group Information and Group Settings to wrap on the left...good for putting in a logo or something like that. See the attached screenshot for an example. There are many limitations, though. Among the things that are disallowed are web forms, javascript or other scripting languages, and iframes. A lot of inline styles are stripped upon save, too. You'll just have to fiddle with it to figure out what you can and cannot do. ? Re: Creating an alias
Mike,
An account is not a subscription. What you can find in your Members list are subscriptions, but those same email addresses may have subscriptions in any number of other groups. Or no groups. Which is how there may be Winlink addresses which are registered (have accounts) but do not appear in your group's Members list. Only the account owner can delete the account. I see from your screenshot that those two addresses are not listed as NC, meaning that they are confirmed, meaning that the holder of that address can receive messages sent to that address (unless you used Direct Add to put them there, or unless you manually confirmed the address, both of which are Premium features). Being able to receive messages at that address is a good thing: it means that the member can use the Email me a link to log in button to log in for one last time to delete the account, even if he/she never set a password for the account. By the way, I also see that they have the P badge, meaning that their subscription Posting Privilege is set to Override: not moderated. I generally recommend against using that setting for most members. If it is your intent to have most members in your group un-moderated it is better to choose the Default Group policy privilege for most members and uncheck Moderated in the Spam Control section of your group's Settings page. That way you can quench a flame war or other disturbance in the group at need by simply checking the Moderated box, and then unchecking it again after things quiet down. Since you are forced to choose at least one in the Spam Control section, check New Users Moderated instead. Re: Poll -- open answers not possible
Steve, are you asking whether you can just let members type in a reply? No, you can't. You must give them options to choose.
However you can let them select more than one. I just created a poll earlier today. I found the last time that people replied to the poll email and therefore the poll didn't calculate how many answers for each.? So I wrote these instructions in the description / question spot along with the question - finding a date for an annual event: Please tick off all choices that make work for you. But please DON'T click on reply in your email program. If you do that, we can't really make use of the polling feature.?
?
Instead: ?Click on Vote Now.?It will take you to the group homepage and the poll.
?
Don¡¯t have a password? Click on Email me a link.
?
It will come in your email - it might go into your junk mailbox by mistake.
Vote in the poll.
Then click on Vote to register it.
?
Want to add a comment? Make a suggestion?
You can go back to the poll and click on Reply. Or start a new topic.
You can also see how others have voted. (This is an option when setting up the poll.)
The choices I offered were 4 dates, plus? None of those dates work for me. (Please send a suggestion or comment.) ? I don't think I can make it this year. For more information, see: Frances /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |

Re: Creating an alias
Mike,
Same answer as before. The affected people already logged into Groups.io using their Winlink address, or they used the +subscribe email address From their Winlink address to create a membership in your group (or some other group). Either of those actions creates a Groups.io account with that as its primary address (meaning it logs in using that address). Either way, the Groups.io account which logs in using that Winlink address must be deleted before the address is free to be used as an Alias for another account. There cannot be two accounts claiming the same email address. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Change members email address
Lavon, Can I as an owner/moderator change a members email address for them as requested??? No, To properly maintain their subscription they must do that through their Account page. They could join again (or you could Invite/Add them) under their new address, but that would be a new subscription -- a whole new person as far as Groups.io is concerned. Then you could remove their old address from your Members list. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Creating an alias
Mike Cohen
Duane & Shal, Thank you both for responding to my request.? Sorry for this long description below, but here's some additional info that might shed some light on our problem. Our goal to to have [email protected] accept un-moderated e-mails from the Winlink e-mail system. NFARES stands for North Fulton Amateur Radio Emergency Services, a team of licensed amateur radio operators in Georgia who use the Winlink e-mail system to send e-mails by radio.? We send some of these e-mails by radio (through a distant station connected to the Internet) to [email protected], which is set up to accept moderated incoming messages from non-members.? Everyone who uses the Winlink system has a unique address that is their amateur radio callsign plus , so mine is ad4mc@....? In order for [email protected] to accept an un-moderated e-mail from callsign@..., that address has to either be added to the member list, which would effectively double the number of members or add the callsign@... address as an alias so that it can be un-moderated.?Three of our members have successfully added thier callsign@... as an alias, but others get the Already Registered message.? Both callsign@... and alias callsign@... members can send un-moderated Winlink e-mails to [email protected]. We don't understand why some aliases are accepted and others are shown as Already Registered. Thanks again, Mike On Wed, Mar 13, 2019 at 1:10 AM Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: Mike, |
Re: member approved by accident
One of the most important reasons for using a web form as an application is that you can make any or all fields mandatory and, if you have a bit of expertise with them, define the type and format of the info you collect so that they can't just put spaces into a field.
And you could always hold up approval until you get what you require. Just be sure you can justify all of the info you require is needed for the security or mission of the group -- Bob Bellizzi Founder, Fuchs Friends?? |
Re: email address from sender
Michael, I note that at one place it says that the email address of the sender of a message will be readable by all members who receive postings and notifications via email. This is correct. It shows in the From field of the message. Depending on your email interface you may have to "Show Details" or something like that to see the actual address rather than just the Display part, but the address is there in the field. This is completely normal for email lists. That seems to undermine the privacy concepts that are embodied in such features as having a single email address to deliver postings to all the members... That's not a privacy concept. It is a functionality concept - an email list offers a way to correspond with hundreds or thousands of list members with a single email message; something that can't usually be done with the BCC field of your email interface (you're normally limited in the number of addresses you can send to in one message). List services also typically offer storage of messages (an archive) so that they can be read later by new list members. and it undermines the concept of Muting in general since a bad player who doesn't like a given posting has the information necessary to attact the posting member's email account directly. Muting in Groups.io doesn't mean that. It lets you stop receiving messages in given topics or hashtags, but not (so far) from specific list members. If you want to block an individual you can still do that in your email interface -- which you wouldn't be able to do if that member's address wasn't in the From field. Surely it would be a better idea for the posting to be shown as FROM Group io so that the posting member's email address is not exposed. There were extensive discussions in the (Suggestion box) on the topic of having Anonymous groups which would work that way. But it has not been implemented (and does not seem to be a priority). Here are some topics that mention it: ? ?Doesn't that make sense?? Why does is it not done that way? It makes sense for some use cases. In many use cases though the ability to contact group members off-list by way of their (exposed) email address is considered an advantage. Some groups, such as Freecycle/Freegle style groups, default their Replies to the sender, because the posting is basically a classified ad, and the people who want give or take the object make those arrangements off-list. In my classmates groups we all know each other IRL and exposing our email addresses among us is not a concern - contact with each other is why we have an email list at all. It isn't done that way because that's not what an email list is. I would argue that use cases that require privacy at the level of not even exposing an email address are likely use cases that would find a better home using a web forum or some other means of communication.
