To minimize difficulty/technicality, you should probably create two groups.? I have two related groups, one social and one technical, for the same subject area.? I have 2 accounts on each, one as owner, the other as a regular member.? I can do all of the management of either using the owner account (same GIO account).

Don't forget that the GMF Wiki pages are public, so you can refer folks to those if they need assistance with certain things (assuming there's a page that covers their need.)

Managing groups

Our organization has a couple of projects going and this looks like it may be a way for interested folks to communicate.? Many of them are going to be fairly unsophisticated in communication, which is why I am trying to add a group email list to our Twitter and Facebook efforts (they don't use those SM tools).??

If I have two different projects, should I create two different groups?? Can I manage them with just this one account???

Ellen -- The subject line suggests that you could not log in at all. Were you successful in logging in using the emailed link, or not?

Once you are successfully logged in, you can set a password. Go to?/account, enter a password in the box, and click Change Password. Having done that, the next time you log in you can use either the password or the "email me" button. So you will have that option going forward.

Logons are stored as a browser cookie. If you used a new device or browser to access groups.io recently, it would have required you to log in again. Such behavior is normal.

Also, many mobile devices are configured to delete cookies as security against it being lost or stolen. If you are using a device that is set up this way, you will have to change your settings to make cookies persistent. More information on the device and browser would be needed.

Finally, the unscheduled system downtime that has occurred over the past three days has caused me (and perhaps some others) to have to re-login when that normally wouldn't have been required. That may have happened to you as well.

I hope something in here helps.

Regards,
Bruce

Re: Cannot login

Hi Ellen,

if you do not have a password defined, you should be taken to your account profile settings after logging in with the link.? A message at the top of the screen should prompt you to create a password so just enter one and use the blue button just below the password field to create/update it.? After that you should be able to login without having to resort to using the link.?? If you don't see the account profile page initially after using the login link it's easy to get to by clicking on your user name in the top-right corner and then selecting Account.

Re: Message Blocked Due to Spam Content

Frank,

I am having similar issues with my very large groups.io community.
Can you cite the Reason code for these rejections? Is it predominantly a given reason?

Most of our community uses gmail so the provider is Google, ie, not
exactly a "provider worth using".
Actually, one of the most reliable of the mailbox providers I've used.

Could it be the DKIM keys need to be updated?
It doesn't seem like it. I'm not having any rejections of messages to my Gmail addresses. Your message shows that Gmail believes (as of then) that Gmail thinks Groups.io's authentication is fine:

Authentication-Results: mx.google.com;
dkim=pass header.i@... header.s=20140610
header.b=iiGiqw0z;
spf=pass (google.com: domain of
[email protected] designates 66.175.222.12 as
permitted sender)

Re: Yahoo transfer #transfer

Yahoo Group Easy Transfer will be back online Wednesday, but no longer free.

Mark says:
I'm going to make a change in the process however. For new groups
requesting a transfer, I'm going to ask that they pay for a year of
premium up front (they can of course downgrade after that). There are
8 groups that gave the go ahead to transfer between the time that
transfers stopped working and when I took down the transfer page. I
will grandfather them and not require they pay the year of premium.

If your group is one of the eight, and for some reason you DO NOT want to go ahead with the transfer, contact him before Wednesday.

Re: Government and quasi-government agencies

jonathon,

The other question I have, is if it would have to go straight to
Enterprise, or if Premium Support would suffice.

From a functional standpoint, I think even a Basic group would suffice. An announce only group with unrestricted membership doesn't seem to need Direct Add or other management features, nor would it be likely to need extra storage.

On the other hand, the three Enterprise-only features Your own domain, Your own logo, and Fully customizable home page might be felt necessary for a public agency to properly identify itself. If they tell people to go to this third party site (Groups.io) to sign up, and the messages will come from there, that could generate confusion or concern by some citizens. Especially if the agency already has a public-facing web presence then having this announcement service integrated with that identity might be imperitive.

If they don't have an established online identity, or they don't mind the "at arms length" appearance of having the announcements delivered by a third party, then keeping the cost low might take priority..

Government and quasi-government agencies

All:

Does anybody know if any government or quasi-government agencies have
one or more mailing lists at groups.io? (My search implied no, but list
names are not indicative of anything.)

Asking, because the local transit system doesn't offer "Rider Alerts"
via email. (Both budget and knowledge on how to run a mailing list are
factors.)
The only way to know if a bus is late, or has been cancelled, is to call
their para-transit services number. Fixed route is not paratransit, and
whilst the paratransit people know the answers, that isn't a good use of
their time.
My thinking is that they could setup an announce only list of Groups.IO.
However, any proposal I submit to the agency, has to show that the
solution will work for them. Which is where knowing if other government
agencies are using Groups.IO, and how they are using it.

The other question I have, is if it would have to go straight to
Enterprise, or if Premium Support would suffice. (This is a small rural
transit agency that has to justify every penny it spends, to both its
own board of directors, and the local county government, as well as the
village and town councils of the places it serves.)

It sounds like this issue is happening to other groups as well as mine, so perhaps the Groups.io team and the?

Alas, no.

That doesn't matter.

A normal service-provider spam filter, or filters made by the user,
wouldn't cause the messages to be rejected. Instead they'd divert the
messages to the user's Spam, Junk, or Trash folder.

A service-provider filter that rejects (rather than diverts) spam
messages is a bit of an anomaly. The user will have to show that
response Reason to the technical support of their service provider and
demand that the provider whitelist Groups.io, or at least your group, so
that the user can receive your group's messages.

In my opinion, if the service provider is unwilling or unable to do
that, then they aren't a provider worth using. The user will never be
able to trust that the provider isn't rejecting other valuable messages.
And worse, the user would never know because most senders don't provide
a mechanism to learn that messages were rejected.

Re: Unusual issue with a group member attempting to resign

If you have a Slack integration and have enabled Sync, that happens.? I think they'd need to leave the Slack group first.? That might even remove them from the Groups.io group when the Sync job runs.

I think you have to ask the user what they did. The most logical answer would be that they changed their mind.

Re: Importing Photos to our group #photos

There is a wiki entry here in GMF on uploading files in bulk:??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Bulk-File-Upload?. Uploading photos works in essentially the same way...you must first create all the albums and then bulk-upload the corresponding photos into each one.

Whoever does the upload will have "ownership" of them. The group owner can change ownership of any existing photo or file by editing it to reassign ownership to any existing member. This involves selecting the name from a pick-list of all members, so hopefully there won't be too many to choose from. You can also add captions and descriptions and such at that time.

The process is pretty burdensome; but with only 200 photos it's also do-able.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
