Re: Facebook page integration issue

Laurie,
I've integrated a facebook page to two of our groups with no problem.
Are you sure you are trying to integrate a Page and not a regular Account or Group?

Re: using the group?s owner address shows senders alias

Are messages sent from <[email protected]> also sent to <[email protected]> so that all Owners/Moderators are aware of communications that appear to be in their ¡®name¡¯?
Currently I CC messages to <[email protected]> to ensure this and to alert the recipient.

Messages sent from <[email protected]> should identify from which Owner/Moderator and that they are also sent to all Owners/Moderators.
Perhaps as: "sent by Display Name at¡± <[email protected]> with an automatic CC to ¡°All Owners/Moderators¡± <[email protected]>

Having messages sent from <[email protected]> be identified as being sent from <[email protected]> would not only be accurate (if the specific sender is identified), but would inform/reinforce that there is such an address to contact owners/moderators, and that messages (topics/conversations?) involving this address go to all Owners/Moderators.

How else could they join if they are joining out of the blue?
They only have they URL to the group's homepage which is the join page.
I can't send them an invite because?I don't know they wanted to join and they don't receive the subscribe link because they only have the group URL.

Ilene,

... however, when they join they have to go to the web ...

Why do they have to go to the web to join your group?

Even in a group with restricted membership use of the +subscribe email command can be done entirely by email. As can accepting an Invite.

I still don't understand?why they can't look at the homepage if they are interested ...

I think Ed's point is that they don't because they don't need to. In this case it is Ed's group who'd like to tell them proactively; not them being interested.

Re: using the group?s owner address shows senders alias

Well, as I wrote in my message, I did use the owners address. I was happy to read a few months ago, that this subject was discussed. And this is the first time I sent a message to the group being sure it was the owner addy.

But no, the sender is me personally, and not the owner. I tried again and again, but no chance.

Re: Automated Member Count

My groups are all email based and going to the web is discouraged, however, when they join they have to go to the web so if they are inclined?to see how many members there are they can look before they submit their application to join the group.
?
You can include the count in your questionnaire that you send out before you send them the invite. Like we have 250 members as of December 20th
Then when you update it again, you can say in that Welcome letter, we have 255 members as of December 22nd.
?
I still don't understand?why they can't look at the homepage if they are interested in seeing how many members?are in the group before they even apply and?get the welcome message to fill out.?

Victoria,

Chris wrote:

Ah, now I know what you meant by alias. I'd quite forgotten the bit about the owner/mod's Display Name being sent out with the +owner address option. That only happens with New Topic, it turns out, not with Send Message.

A work-around would be to blank your Display Name, or change it to "Moderator". But of course that would affect your normal New Topics and Replies if sent via the web site.

That one of the two points almost seems more like a bug report than a suggestion, but perhaps some group owners want it that way. But if that's the case - if it is a deliberate design choice - then the Display Name should also be showing in the drop-list item for the +owner address is selected. Sending something different than what was shown is clearly a bug.

As a suggestion perhaps one might ask that both versions be available in the list: with the Display Name from your profile, or with your Role (or maybe with literal "Moderator" regardless of your Role, to keep it generic).

I raised this point quite a while ago; more correctly both points. See the GMF thread starting here: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/6359 and this thread on beta: for starters. At the time of writing I haven't traced the point where I requested being able to Reply as an Owner but I'll keep trying when I get the chance.

?Manually put in the Welcome message the?New Member Count?each time it changes?OR you can say as of December 13th 7:37?PM CST we have 250 members.
The next time you can say as of December 21st 6:00 PM CST we have 248 members.
Your membership can go down as well as up.
?
Of course you put in the current date, time and how many members you have.
?
You can update that?once a week if you need to.
?
You know I have learned not to give out information unless asked or needed.
They can always get the member count from the home page if they really wanted it.
?
Depending upon what they are looking for seeing a member count in a Welcome email may turn them off to staying in your group. If it is a high number they may think it will be too much mail for them. If it is a low number they may think not to much activity going on. I would let them find out the group?member count on their own.

Victoria,

Isn?t there an option to send a message just in the owner?s or moderator?s name without showing sender?s alias?
?
If you're using Send Message (from the Members list) or New Topic then the From address is a drop-list. Select the +owner address instead of your own.

Reply does not have that option, I'm not sure why not.

using the group?s owner address shows senders alias

why is it that sending a message using the group?s owner address as sender shows the sender?s personal alias? I wanted to send a message from the moderators/owners to the group and hoped it would not show my name and alias.

Isn?t there an option to send a message just in the owner?s or moderator?s name without showing sender?s alias?

Short answer: No, this is not currently an available feature using the existing group owner interface.?

Long answer: I checked the corresponding section in my own home page and the number of members appears as a string literal, undoubtedly generated as needed on the server side.?So you would have to pay for Premium access, query the membership database, and figure out how to send the result in an outgoing email. I don't have enough experience in the groups.io API to know if this can be done (the API group displays very little activity).

Re: Automated Member Count

Ed,

I don't know of any text merge features available in the welcome notice (or any of the others), apart from the built-in substitution of addressee name in the boilerplate part of the Invite and Direct Add notices.

That's not a bad idea though; you could drop it into the . It would be useful to "mail merge" those notices against the facts available to the join process (addressee name and address) and basic facts about the group such as member count.?

We would like to let our new members know how many other people are in the group.? We would also like to put this information in the Monthly Guidelines message that is sent out.

You could fake it with some vague and periodically updated statement like "over 1300 members". Of course that leaves you with stale info if you forget to update it, which is presumably why you want an automation to do it.

We (Owners/Moderators) were wondering if there is a way to automatically include the member count in the welcome message sent to new members?

Example:? Our present membership is XXX (Where XXX is automatically updated by the system).

We would like to let our new members know how many other people are in the group.? We would also like to put this information in the Monthly Guidelines message that is sent out.
