surely to change the name of a group you go to Admin > Settings and edit the email address and the title. I think then you have to wait awhile for the dns servers to catch up with the change

Re: Is the invite working?

Alex,
Delay very often isn't a function of groups.io but some specific email providers.? One in particular that seems to delay messages is Roadrunner (xx@...)? For a time ALL messages to subscribers on Roadrunner were delayed until late at night and and then, a very limited time was given to pass the messages to them from groups.io.

I sent out 40 invites today.? Several of the invites have been accepted.? ?So far it seems to be working fine.? However, I was unaware that there was a limit to the number of invitations I could send at a particular time.

Most of us present or ex yahoo moderators lamented the loss of the "add members" feature at yahoogroups when Yahoo removed it.

I thought when I decided to move one group here from yahoo that there was going to be a add-members feature here (not just "invite.")

Am I remembering incorrectly? Or can someone tell me where to find it?

Re: Is the invite working?

Hi

I just tested it and it works fine for me. Did it actually send? Check Sent Invitations.?
Or is it an address you have added in as an email alias? Of course, it could have been marked as spam.

I have to add: One invite didn't work. One other did. Still investigating.

Ilene/Sugar -- The above statement is not true. You can change your group name, and all the content (including the messages) will still be there.

What happens is that LINKS that you may have created within the group email archive, or on the group home page, and so on, will no longer "connect up."?

Please read the wiki entry again. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Renaming-a-Group

If you find this discussion confusing, it may well be that creating a new group and moving everyone there will be the most straightforward option. I just want to be sure that no one reads this thread a year from now and comes away thinking that changing their group name is invariably an unrecoverable disaster. It is not...but you DO have to know what you're doing.

Tanks. Ellen

I already changed the name and it was not a huge deal as I thought it was.

Nothing changed, messages are still there, members are still there.

All that changed was address and URL

Which I saved and sent it out to the members and posted? to the list

Smile

I appreciate that

Sugar

Re: still looking for an answer

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thank you Bruce

I get it now.

After I went to General settings

I changed old name¡±The-Diabetic-corner-With-Sugar¡± to new name¡± BlindDiabetics4Jesus¡±

Then after the general name underneath there is subject edit field that I also changed to (BlindDiabetics4Jesus)

TheURL was automatically changed and I got that as well.

So far there is nothing that is updated to the file section and that part of settings is disabled for now.

No pictures allowed either.

I don¡¯t think uploading on the file section will occur but if there is a issue I will come back here.

Thank you so much

I appreciate all the advice and suggestions.

Truly

Sugar

Exporting the group before changing the name was a wise move!

There could be some problems that you haven't run into yet. I will give you an example...

When you upload a file, there's an opportunity to post a notice to the group. The notice subject will say something like "New file uploaded to [email protected]."?The message will contain other references to the group name, including a link to the file:

"You can access this file at the URL:
/g/groupname/files/filename.pdf (or whatever)"

Groups.io will not parse these messages and update "groupname" to "newgroupname." So the message Subject will still refer to the old group name, as will the link...if someone now clicks on it, they will get a "404 file not found" error.

Similarly, if you have manually inserted links to "groupname" content in a database, home page, or [especially] your wiki, you may find many of them to be broken. Links between items as accessed through the groups.io menu system, however, should still work.

Depending on how you use your group, such things may or may not be a big concern. Just be on the lookout for it.

Bruce

Re: Logging In and Setting a password

I actually don't think that's true at all.? I'm pretty sure that even if you use a 'strange' computer, would still send an email to your registered email address.

If you search for "login" you will find more than one dictionary definition that indicates, nothing about using a password but does say to enter your identity to be allowed to use a system.

In the case of Groups.io, when you ask to send you a link to log in, the system identifies you automatically and sends you the link.? If you were to? use a 'strange' computer where you had never used your subscription, you would not receive a response.
