Some browsers on mobile devices will delete cookies by default. It's a security feature in case it gets lost or stolen. If your subscriber finds this objectionable, he will have to find some way to disable it. For Safari, see??

Hope this helps,

Ah... I'm not saying it's "normal", not least because I am not an iPhone (or any other type of smartfone) owner.

To get to the bottom of this I think you have to find out exactly what your associate sees at every step of the process, and what they are doing.at every step.?

Let's look at a few possibilities:

  • "Other person" receives test post by email, and tries to reply by email. That should work without any need to log in at all. However, the reply must be from the email address that is registered as belonging to that Groups.io subscriber. (Which is not the same thing as a "group member")

  • "O/P reads test post on the web UI, and tries to reply via web UI. This raises another issue; if the group settings allow non - members to read posts without being logged in, then it might be all too easy to forget that this is a "read only" function and that a reply by web UI requires the device in use to be logged in. MIght be worth checking this.

  • Having logged in and replied, is the "O/P" logging out again, or just closing Groups.io, or perhaps neither?? If logging out then another reply will require a new log in. If the O/P is simply closing Groups.io then the logged - in status should be maintained by cookie, unless for some reason the iPhone isn't storing them. (As stated above I'm not an iPhone owner so I don't know if this could happen.) If "neither" then I am at a loss to understand what is happening.

I think you will have to pin the other person down for more detail about exactly what is seen and done; without that you and the rest of us are just guessing really, and (hopefully!) intelliigent guesswork has its limits.

That suggests that you have run out of storage. Are you a free or paid - for group? That affects the amount of storage you have available. Have a look at both your files and photos sections, if you look in the right places you will find figures for how much space is currently being used.

(I am assuming that you as an individual have "upload files" priviledges.)

Re: iPhone

Chris, pretty sure it's the latter as you surmise. But why is this normal on the iPhone, to require a new login every time? I'm responding through the Web UI right now on my desktop, and it didn't ask me to log in again. Thanks.

Upload Files button greyed out

For my group LeCroyOwnersGroup I just added a folder and when I attempt to add files to it the upload button is greyed out.

Thank you for looking into this.

Re: Concerned about FALSE Pending member/Spammer?

A big thank you to all who shared their thoughts.

I do have new? subscribers on moderation for their first 4 posts.? And yes, that helps.

But in this case, I didn't let it get that far.? She posted once.?

I was far more concerned about a new subscriber having access to our databases of information..?

But in the end, going with my personal gut reaction was the best course.? Deletion.? And then when I saw her email address return, I hit BAN.

Again, thank you.

I know this may be a stupid question but can you confirm that your friend is attempting to reply by email rather than via the web UI?

If the former then I have no idea what is happening; if the latter then this sounds "normal".

Digest doesn't open in Samsung client, but opens in GMAIL app; Android 8.1, Samsung J7Pro #email

Hi folks,

I receive the full featured digest for two groups that I don't own. When the digests arrive in my inbox, all looks normal until I go to open them. The header with the digest looks normal but the message box stays blank. This is Samsung's standard email app. I'm using Android 8.1 now.

When I open the same digest with the GMAIL app, no problem. So I have a workaround, but it's a tad inconvenient.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a fix?

Is it possible to receive instructions in setting up databases in my google.io group?
Please advise.

Re: Yahoo address members having trouble?

Rachel,

I just heard from one of the two members affected and she checked spam and has not been getting any messages even though she shows as a current member of the group.

Other things that could affect whether she receives messages are her subscription options and her bounce status. Though I don't know of any reason to suspect that those would have changed.

I¡¯ve just removed her and sent a new invite and also sent her a link to join as a new member. I hope that this will resolve the issue.

Not likely.

Unless the issue is that she had/has subscriptions under more than one address and this causes her to check for messages at the other one or otherwise straighten out that confusion.

If you haven't already seen it, GMF's wiki page on being removed for marking messages as spam might provide some clue.

Re: Passwords

Howard,

Does each classmate need a password or can they get by without one?

They can subscribe by email, or accept your invitation by email, and they can post and read messages by email; all without ever visiting the site. There are some handy email addresses listed on the home page of your group that help with this. There are also email commands that allow them to control their subscription options by email.

In my classmate group I'd guess that most have never visited the web site, even though some of us have shared reunion photos there.

Or, as Duane pointed out, they can use the web interface without a password by using the log in by email facility.

But if they prefer they can set up a password for their account. That's very easy at Groups.io. It gives them a little more flexibility to change their email address in the future if the one they were using gets cancelled or becomes unusable without enough notice to log in by email one last time to change it.

That wouldn't do any good either because they can change that setting themselves.? Moderation is the only tool that would do anything near what you recommend.

Right - but it should be an option as my groups are email based groups and the only responding
I allow is from email. If a group isn't email based then the archive option can be set so all members see it.
But there should be a way to hide it if needed.
?
"For sure! Can't read the archives AND can't get email? No point in anyone
Joining such a group." If you read the entire email, it wasn't for the whole group. Just the potential trouble maker.
?
Let me explain. Many of the groups?recently joining groups IO from Yahoo were email based groups.
The archives aren't any use to them and I don't want them to be as well as many of the "new"
Yahoo groups that are moving to groups IO from the circle that I travel in.
I am not saying to put everyone on "No Mail" just the spammer that the original poster was talking about.
But they still have access to the archives so no mail wouldn't be the answer right now.
I was just thinking of a way for the spammer or potential spammer wouldn't bother the group.
Moderation is one way.
?
I do know that the archives can be set to MEMBERS ONLY
But that isn't what I was talking about.
There should be an option so that members can't see the archives and should just rely on email.
What works for your groups or other people's groups don't necessarily work for all groups.

This doesn't make sense to me. If your members (I prefer the word SUBSCRIBER
to make it clearer that they're a MEMBER of your group vs just a MEMBER of
Groups.io) ) can't read the message archives, then they can only participate
via email.

For sure! Can't read the archives AND can't get email? No point in anyone
joining such a group.

The archives CAN be "shut down." Just change the group settings so only
SUBSCRIBERS (members of the group) can read the message archives.

Re: Yahoo address members having trouble?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Since converting our 1,340 member group from Yahoo in August, we've had 45 incidents of members being removed for spam.? Of those, 41 had Yahoo addresses despite Yahoo addresses constituting only about 50% of our membership. (Some of these have been removed multiple times, so the ratio comparison isn't precise.)

Yesterday I was able to pin down one of them who accidentally marked a message as spam, and was immediately removed.? Another said she deleted the contents of her junk mail folder withing checking if any group messages were there, since she was getting them normally in her inbox.? She was getting a digest, so why a spam filter would trip on one digest and not another is a mystery.

We're going to start interrogating members about their recent actions when we get a spam removal notice from Groups.io to see if there's a correlation between the removal message timestamp and something they did.

But to your question, yes, I subjectively feel that yahoo addresses are our main problem.? And a cause of a lot of frustration.

Is this just the cost of doing business as a yahoo user on IO?

Sure!? Take a look at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Set-a-Personal-Password-and-Profile%3B-Changing-Email-Address? They could use the "Email me a link" option each time they want to use the site.

Along those lines, there was a recent change made to the site.? When you log in, a cookie is created that expires in 30 days to effectively log you out, as well as a second one showing that you've logged in before.? As long as those cookies exist, the 'logged in' cookie will be updated each time you visit the site.? If you never wait more than 30 days, you'll stay logged in forever!? The main thing to remember is that since these are cookies, there will be separate ones for each device used.

The answer to this is a really important to pinpointing the cause of any remaining problems. Just guessing until this is answered.

This too.

Is this just the cost of doing business as a yahoo user on IO?

It's the cost of doing business as a user of ANY SERVICE that aggressively seeks to reduce spam sent to its users. If the user of such a service tells their service that messages from <GROUPNAME>(at)groups.io is spam, then they risk all messages from that address either going to their spam folder or simply being deleted. In the case of deletion it becomes impossible to find them and click on them and say they're not really spam.

My ISP allows me to send spam to my inbox (effectively turning off the spam filter), or to my JUNK folder, or to delete it completely. If I choose the latter I have to change that setting if I want to tell them something isn't spam. Can't mark it as "NOT spam" if I can't see it.

Febe,

But concerns still linger about if this is a spammer or worse.
Is there any way for or it's owner to check into this?
?
Doubtful.

If the person had violated the terms of service you could report their violation and maybe Groups.io would delete their account. But what you've said indicates that you headed them off before anything reached that point.

Otherwise Groups.io doesn't know much more about them than you do: their email address. Groups.io could possibly see if they've been attempting to join other groups, but of course that of itself isn't a violation.

Re: Admin message says -2

Peter,

In my Admin section I have a notification that there are matters to attend to that says ¡°-2¡± but there is nothing showing to say that I need to do anything. Previously on notifications I am sure it has just said, for example, ¡°2¡± without any other symbol.

Weird.

Given that it is persistent (Gerald's idea didn't help) it sounds like a glitch.

I'd take a screen shot to document it, then send a report to [email protected] describing it.
