Re: Pending member expiration

My take on this is that the expiration time is for the active link included in the invitation email. It is good for 14 days and expires, is no longer active, after that. However, the listing on the "Sent Invitations" page remains indefinitely. That way you can see who you invited, whether they have accepted or not, and easily resend the invitation if you wish. These can then be removed as you see fit.

It has never seemed important enough to me to report it but my experience is consistent with what Debbie observes.

Re: gMail and Aliases

Sharon,
Has the member added their gmail address as an alias on their account?? This should resolve this issue.

Account -> Login setting page -> Advanced settings
Email Alias
If the email service you use for this account sends your outgoing messages from a different address than your account address, please enter your sending address here. Please note: No group email messages or notifications will be sent to this address; group emails and notices from group owners & moderators are sent only to your account address.

Re: Photos came through in some messages, but not others #messages #photos

Paula,

A message posted to our group had a photo in it. I thought I had selected the settings that would not allow photos in messages, but I didn't receive a notification to approve/disapprove the message.

It probably relates to how the image was placed into the message body. HTML (the language of formatted messages) has various options, and I've found that most email interfaces don't make it obvious which option you're using. Only one of the three options is, properly speaking, an attachment, but it is (or has been) the most commonly used option.

See this message, and the one it links to.

Is this an anomaly or is there an additional setting I need to select to make sure that all messages with photos are tagged for approval?

Groups.io probably needs to change something in how it handles HTML embedded photos to let you moderate all three options.

An embedded photo is stored as data within the message, not as a separate file.? BTW, I just did some testing and found that this won't work if the group is set to Plain Text Only.

I don't believe there's a way to prevent embedded photos, only attached ones.? The good news is that embedded photos shouldn't use any of the group storage quota since they're not stored in the Emailed Photos album.? You could check there to see if it shows up.? If not, it was embedded.

Re: spam override

It sounds like maybe her email is being caught in the relatively new scanning feature, .? It would depend on what all is included in her email, such as signatures with links.? You should be able to check the activity log for your group to see if this is what's happening.? If you have her subscribe using the web site, or at least create an account, it may help.

Re: New Members

You can't force anyone to enter a name.? You do have the option to enter one for them.? If neither of those happens, the site will attempt to get a name from the first post they send by email.

Re: Is groups.io really unsuitable for my needs?

Apologies to all.? It was Adblock that was keeping me from seeing the links, as it was with Gaute, not Flash.? (That was over a year ago!)? Since there are no ads on Groups.io, I've disabled Adblock for the site.

spam override

we have a club member we are trying to get subscribed to IO from yahoo................when she tries to subscribe to our IO list she gets a bounce message back saying "spam" - how might she fix that??? is there any way I as owner can get around that?? there is no link in the email back to her from IO with a link to override that - as there is in a typical "you've spammed us, hence you're bounced off the list" - 'but if this is in error, click this link to be resubscribed.......
clear as mud, eh?
thanks - Jan from NH

Re: Invitation Approval

Sorry!? I thought the original poster was asking how long before they received notification that an invitee had actually subscribed.

New Members

Is there a way to change our group's requirements that new members who wish to join have to put a name into the fields?? And if they don't want to enter their name, it doesn't allow them to submit the request to join?

Hm.. when you ask that way, I went and had a look at the source.
No flash there.

What I did find was a row of html which AdBlock+ had hidden as being "intrusive social networking stuff" I guess.
Presumably because the .btn-social class on the <a> tags.

OK, I guess I should not be so hard on groups.io then.
The text underneath makes a lot more sense now :-)

However adblocking is getting kind of common, and there is this this webdesign thing called graceful degradation..

Re: Editing Files

I used the sidebar function in the Wiki to create a list of leaders in our group. You can also put a "sticky" wiki page that sits on top of your message board, though it only shows a few lines of text and then an option to see the whole thing. One other option is to create a database, that would be easily edited and downloaded.

gMail and Aliases

One of my group members has had problems with a ¡°send mail as¡± address. He gave me the information below. I don¡¯t totally understand it but thought someone here might.

Sharon

In plain English, this kicks in if one uses gmail to handle other accounts, using the

Send mail as:
(Use Gmail to send from your other email addresses)

...feature in the gmail settings.

What happens is that gmail puts the "send mail as" address for the desired account in the 'from' field of the sent message.

but it also adds a 'sender' field in the message headers, with the base account address in it (the actual gmail user login address), which is not the same as the 'from' address.

Apparently the groups.io software looks at the 'sender' field, if there is one, and uses that to determine list membership. Since in this case it doesn't match a subscribed address (which is in the 'from' field), the message is rejected.
