Re: Questions about conversion to Groups.Io

Spencer,

... if the questions have already been answered, please point me to
them.
There's quite a bit of material available in GMF's wiki page about transferring Yahoo groups:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups

1. ... The way I understand the easy transfer process is that when the
transfer is made, all of the non-bouncing email addresses are
automatically subscribed.
Correct.

Can we have just the content moved over without subscribing the
current yahoo group members?
Yes, but I recommend against it in most cases.

Group content is "owned" by the member that uploaded it (or posted it). For the purposes of the transfer that means the email address of the member in the Yahoo group. If the address doesn't exist in the Groups.io group when the content is copied, then that "ownership" is broken. For uploaded content I believe it becomes "owned" by the person who initiated the transfer.

In a default transfer, where the members and content are both copied, the transfer agent copies the membership first so that this only affects the members that were bouncing in the Yahoo Group (or had left it) at the time of the transfer.

2. Can we take all of the old content and move it to an archive
subgroup?
You can transfer your Yahoo Group to the archive subgroup instead of the primary group.

The same thing applies as above: include the membership in the transfer to the subgroup. The members will automatically be added to the primary group as well.

3. Is if possible for a moderator or owner to move posts from a group
to a subgroup or vice versa?
No.

That feature has been requested, but it is not (yet?) implemented.

4. Can the owner or moderator delete posts that do not conform to the
terms of use?
A moderator given the "Edit Archives" permission, or an owner, can delete any post or content. For any reason.

A member may delete his own posts or content. Again for any reason. This is the meaning and value of the "ownership" described above.

Questions about conversion to Groups.Io

Hi...I'm very new to this, so bear with me and if the questions have already been answered, please point me to them.??
1.? I want to transfer from yahoo groups, but I want to take the chance to clean up the email addresses and make sure that the ones we subscribe to the groups.io are current members.? The way I understand the easy transfer process is that when the transfer is made, all of the non-bouncing email addresses are automatically subscribed.? Can we have just the content moved over without subscribing the current yahoo group members?
2.? Can we take all of the old content and move it to an archive subgroup?
3.? Is if possible for a moderator or owner to move posts from a group to a subgroup or vice versa?
4.? Can the owner or moderator delete posts that do not conform to the terms of use?

Bulk Remove

Am I correct that if I want to remove a name from the Pending Member list that I can check the box next to the name and select Bulk Remove?

Thanks,

Re: Group for blind managers

?Hey guys. I¡¯ve been reading all of these responses to this topic, and I am blind myself. I don¡¯t think that having a separate group for blind managers would be a good idea, ?simply because it would not be practical and may cause a lot of confusion. I think this group is very helpful, I don¡¯t see a reason for a separate one for blind or visually impaired people.
Thanks.

I am not blind myself, but I have worked on accommodating applications to blind users. I found that making everyone, sighted and blind, aware of blind issues was helpful to all. I think many sighted moderators have blind or sight-impaired members or expect to have such members someday and want to hear about sight issues. In my case, I think I may have sight-impaired members, but I am not sure. Therefore, combining sighted and blind moderator's forums is a simplification.

Any change is stressful, even change for the better.

Question for you owners. I reading that emails are being spoofed. How is that occurring.?
I don't believe I've encountered any clear indication that groups.io emails are being spoofed or being used for spam. What is happening is that overly-aggressive filters sometimes struggle to tell the difference, and sometimes divert/head off legitimate group emails.

In that context, some of the GMF members (including me) are only acknowledging what spammers do as we speculate as to why some subscriber's mail filters are making this error.

Also, if we transition a group, does the former group lose all the email addresses and member names?
The transfer agent does no harm to your Yahoo group. In this context, "transfer" is an unfortunate term..."copy" would be more appropriate.

That said, once you do complete the process and your subscribers get accustomed to groups.io, I think you will happily cut the Yahoo umbilical cord on your own initiative.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Re: Transition Question

Donnell,

I reading that emails are being spoofed.

So far that has been reported to have happened to a single email address.
How is that occurring.

It would appear that someone acquired a list of compromised email accounts (these can be purchased at low cost on the "dark web") and used some of them to send messages purporting to be from the victim (Gilly). Given access to an email account at a legit email service it is not difficult to forge a message that claims to be "From" someone else. This is how most phishing and other scam emails are sent these days.

Also, if we transition a group, does the former group lose all the email addresses and member names?

No. The "transfer" only copies information, it makes no changes to the Yahoo Group.

Re: Major issues in my group, spoofed or something internal in IO??? Help please.

Jim,

Another cae would be my own. My outbound email is sent via my ISP (domain =?
) but I receive message (and show as the "from" address when I
send) my own domain at , which is hosted separately. I have no
problems of that sort with either or Yahoo.

I got the details wrong. It isn't that the envelope-from matched the delivering service, it is that the domain of the envelope-from is listed in the DNS system as a mail service, but doesn't exclude the delivering IP address in its SPF record.

is using your email address, including your custom domain, in the MAIL FROM during the SMTP connection (the "envelope-from"), your domain has a DNS entry, that specifies talktalk servers for delivery of mail, but has no published SPF record. Ideally it would, and that would list talktalk's servers as valid senders.

Another thing talktalk isn't doing for you is DKIM signing your outbound messages. But you would have to give them an identity certificate for them to do so. Fortunately those are now available for free from , but not all email services support using them.

I got a bit deeper educated on this this than I expected as a result of discussing Gilly's case with Mark. He's working on better authentication so as to head off such things, but is a bit stymied by the (large enough) fraction of legit users who's messages wouldn't pass a more stringent test. I'm not exactly sure which side of that yours would fall, but I think ok. Certainly ok if yours were DKIM-signed by your domain (and your DNS records pointed to your certificate). Or, if your domain had an SPF record that lists or refers to talktalk's outbound servers. I think either would be good enough to pass, for example, a DMARC test.

That level of filtering is done at Groups.io as well.

In the case at hand the spoofed message had an "envelope-from" (the "mail
from" provided at connection time in the SMTP protocol) that matched the
domain that delivered the message. As such it would also have been accepted by
Yahoo Groups also.

However the header-from (the from field provided inside the message header) was
spoofed to match the subscription address of the group's owner. This form of
spoof is not rejected (by either service) because it is too often used
legitimately by people who use email forwarding services.
Another cae would be my own. My outbound email is sent via my ISP (domain =
talktalk.net) but I receive message (and show as the "from" address when I
send) my own domain at jimella.co.uk, which is hosted separately. I have no
problems of that sort with either groups.io or Yahoo.

Re: User hashtags in calendar Event Names

Thanks Bruce,

I had another event where the hashtag was the entire event name, so it was both first and last.? :-)

This time, the hashtag was processed and a Mute button was added to the end of the message.? Now I have to refine whether it will work at the end with other text preceding it.

For groups with a lot of repeating events, having the ability to mute an event's reminders is a valuable feature.

Regards,
Mark

I don't think the event reminder code parses the Event Name field for hashtags. But I could be wrong.

Try putting the hashtag first or last [instead of in the middle] and see if that helps.

My ISP also occasionally flags a message when it receives a group message that I posted (i.e.: when I appear to be sending a message to myself). It is warning you because spammers often find it easier to spoof your own email address when sending you spam.

If it's obviously something I sent, I usually just ignore such notices. But if it bothers you, you can turn off receiving your own group messages using the instructions at?/static/help#dupemail?

Hope this helps,

Re: Google thinks I am a spammer when I send group notices #spam

Nelson,

I am the manager of pozhealth and I am getting this warning from
Google when I post a group notice.
Interesting. I don't think I've seen that on any of my own posts. Or if so it was years ago.

What can I do to let Google know I am not a spammer?
Usually Gmail shows a warning like that there will be a line of text and links beneath name and date and above the message content (when previewed and opened). That would normally contain a link to reassure Google about the message.

Look also in the row of buttons above the list of messages. When looking at the Inbox one of those is normally an octagon with an exclamation point in it, to mark the message as spam. When looking at this message perhaps it changes to a "not spam" button?

If not, maybe the Help icon (circled question mark) in the lower right will tell you what to do to mark your messages as Not Spam.

The Links functionality of Yahoo Groups does not exist as such. If you had a Links section in Y!G, those same links should have been transferred; and will appear as a Database table, which does pretty much the same thing.

Or you might want a wiki page. The wiki editor is capable of creating hyperlinks to any web resource using the "insert/edit link" item on the toolbar. You can do the same with your group's home page, if you want.

You can also insert links into a message using the message editor. If you subsequently make that message "sticky," it will appear at the top of all the messages online and remain there, readily available.

If you want to place an HTML file with resource links in the Files area, you will have to create that with an HTML editor on your PC and upload it to your group.

Or I could be totally misunderstanding you. More information, please!

Re: Change in order of how messages are presented

Beth,

All of a sudden when I look at messages online the display order has
changed for me (in multiple groups including this one).
... Where is this set please?
At the top right of the page full of messages, click the word "Date" to flip the order. The arrow to the right of the word shows the current direction (pointing up is oldest first).

As you've seen, that choice goes with you as you navigate, there is no separate setting or option.
