Re: clarification on direct add feature

Adam,

When I Direct Add to a subgroup the members are receiving two
notifications, one that a moderator has added them and one that
appears generic.
The "You've been added" notice cannot be avoided. You can add your own text to it, but you can't edit the boilerplate or turn it off.

The other is likely to be your group's Welcome notice. There is a default Welcome notice for each group, but you can edit it as you please or make it not Active (if not Active it is not sent). See the Member Notices tab of your group's Settings page.

Re: Groups.io site updates #changelog

Peter,

I LOVE the bulk operations feature. Will this be rolled out to PHOTOS
section anytime soon.
I don't know. There is a related to-do item:

There are also topics in the beta group that relate:

You could chime in on one of those topics with your own suggestion(s) on the topic.

THanks Shal for your efforts!
You're welcome, but I'm only reporting and commenting on what's new. Mark is the one that makes it happen.

Speaking of which, he posted this week's changelog this morning. Which means I'll be commenting on it here a bit later.

Re: Move a message into a different topic

Tim,

I keep getting messages about previous topics, but with a new 'topic'
heading. How can I move them into the appropriate topic please?
That's a very common issue, on forums as well as email lists.

As Gerald mentioned, there is the topic merge function in Groups.io that will allow you to gather these "strays" together.

That's likely to get much easier to use as soon as Mark pushes the bulk action feature to the site - right now it is just in testing:

Note, if you moderate messages in your group you can also edit a pending message's Subject line to assign it to the correct topic before it posts. When doing this I find it helps to copy/paste the subject from the existing topic - the match must be exact. Catching them while they are pending can be a bit tedious, but it avoids the cascade of email replies under the obsolete subject line that Bruce mentioned.

Some other things to try:
Have you received an email from groups.io that says "We've approved your group <groupname> [at] groups.io and you can now invite people to it and post to it".? If not, the group is not live yet.? The address that received that email is the owner.

You can also go to the Search page (/search) and search for the name you used to create it.? If it's there, the group is live.? Go to the group's home page and click on the group owner email address and send a message to the owner.? If you're the owner, you'll get the email.? Unfortunately, it will be addressed To: <group>+owner, not the owner's actual email.? Depending on how you have your email setup, you might be able to discern what address received it.? Or in the headers there will be a line like "Received: from web01.groups.io .... by ... for <email>" where <email> will the owner's address.

When using the direct add option in a premium group, if all addresses submitted don¡¯t get added, is there a list somewhere of those that didn¡¯t get added?

If you have an email address of any kind and GIO has confirmed that you can receive mail there, then you already have an "account." If the address was not in Bouncing status on Yahoo, the transfer agent assumes that address is working and does not send a confirmation email. Those addresses in Yahoo that are in Bouncing status are not simply transferred.

If you subsequently register another email address then that's a second account.

Long-time users of Yahoo groups are accustomed to creating a Yahoo account under which several email addresses may be associated (including, typically, a Yahoo mail address). Or they may have a defunct email address that they use on Yahoo to subscribe to a group but have email delivery turned off and read their mail online. It does not work that way here.

GMF is full of threads where someone is undoubtedly logged in under the wrong email address (or not logged in at all) and can't figure out why the web interface isn't letting them do what they expect. A typical one was posted to the group just last evening (/g/GroupManagersForum/message/10739?). Sooner or later all new users of GIO need to wrap their head around this.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce

How to stop receiving your own email posting?

How do we stop an emailed post from being send to the person who posted it?

Also why does IO haphazardly put a msg in DRAFTS.. not saving drafts or canceling a post. But mesgs (not all) still end up in that location

Merge Groups

Hello,
I would like to merge one groups.io group into another group.? Is that possible?? and if so, how?

You haven't really given us all that much to work with. Toby Kraft has provided one thing to look at. Here's something else to ponder...

Are you referring to a newly - formed group or is it one that has been recently transferred from Yahoo or elsewhere? Is it a group that has existed for some time, and is it a Basic (free) group or a Premium or Enterprise group (paid for) because this determines the amount of storage available for Files & Photos.

Irrespective of the status of your group when your storage limit is reached then Upload tabs simply stop working, and either a clear - out or perhaps an upgrade to a group with more storage is required.

The relevance of any particular response to a query (such as Toby's or mine) is highly dependent on the amount of information provided in that query, and in reality the information you gave us was a bit, er, lacking in detail.

It is comparable to someone seeing their doctor and simply saying "I don't feel well" and expecting an accurate diagnosis of the problem on the basis of those 4 words and nothing else.

Re: Are Transferred Members actually utilizing new Groups.io

Bryan,

That's not an account, that's a token.
You may consider it semantics, but yes the email address is the ID (or token) to an account. Direct Add and group transfer create the account behind the ID, as does signing up, accepting an invitation, or sending a +subscribe command and confirming it.

To log in to that account the member need only use the "Email me a link to log in" button, or go through the the "Forgot your password, or don't have one yet?" link.

Re: new group

Lenny,

I created a new guidedogs group on July 22. The group does not show up
in my groups and I can not locate it.
Chances are that you were logged in under a different email address when you created the group than now when you are trying to find it. In Groups.io, each login email address is a separate account.

If that is the case, then you need to log out and log back in under that other address. Then you can invite this address to join the group, promoting it to co-owner if that's what you want.

Joseph Hudson

Hi Lenny, it should show up in your groups. Mark was on vacation, so it may or may have not gotten approved. I would email support and see what might be going on there.

Yes, it does.? The email address is the account.? A person can use the site/group without setting a password by entering their email address on the Log In page and selecting the option to "Email me a link" which will log them in when they click on the link.? If they don't clear cookies on that device, they'll have access for 30 days.? This can be repeated as often as you like.

Re: Direct Add with "Special Notice" email option

When members are Direct Added, they will get a notification to that effect.? I believe they also get one if they are transferred,? If you want, you can also set up a Welcome Notice that would go to all of them.

Re: Are Transferred Members actually utilizing new Groups.io

A transfer does not create an account on the site. It subscribes them to the group only.? They need to create an account on the site and use the subscribed email address to access the web permissions for the group.

From what I see, only the activity log would show a web action, but not log in and out status.

Is there a way to bulk resize all existing pictures in the photos section?

Not at this time. It is an often-requested feature.

?

Optionally, what is the recommended resize value for new photos?

I find 1024px in the long dimension to be more than adequate for viewing online. Your mileage may vary, depending on whether your group is graphics-heavy, and whether some members are fond of lossless formats (TIF, BMP, etc).

I am just trying to take some precautions so that things do not come out of control later.

I suggest also setting up your group to delete old email attachments if you run out of space. See Admin->Settings->Message Formatting->Out of Space.

Hope this helps,
