Edited to correct "latter" to "former" (below).? "Latter" has been struck in the paragraph and replaced with "former".? My apologies for the re-send/duplication.

Hi Dan,
maybe you can at least fix the group where you are moderator (instead of owner as you were). And ignore the following if you¡®ve already tried that.?
Try this:
click on ?Admin¡° - it should then show the options?
- Pending
- Members
- Activity
- Membership (with sub-options)
- Preferences ?(with sub-options)
?
Click ?Members¡° - it should show the member list. Go though it (or search) to your own account. I assume it will say ?Mod¡° beside the email address.
click on the name - it should show ?User Details¡° and Role ?Moderator¡° underneath. Click on ?Moderator¡° - it should open a list with ?Member¡°, ?Moderator¡°, ?Owner¡°. Select ?Owner¡° - then scroll to the bottom and ?Save¡°.?
I hope the system will allow these actions. That should set you back to Owner status hopefully. Log out and back in to verify that this has worked.
?
If that has worked, and even if not, click on ?Activity¡° under ?Admin¡° and try to find in the log any action from the last few days that could have caused the change of your Owner status. Hopefully that group doesn¡®t have too much activity so that you have a chance to find something.
Good luck! Thomas ? |

Hi Dan,
what browser are you using? And is it the same on all 3 machines?
I assume you use Windows (not Apple Mac), so I¡®d try a different browser(Chrome or Firefox maybe). And if you have access to an iPad, you could try the groups.io app on that one. Just to check if the behaviour changes.
?
I think the behaviour you describe when you tried to approve a pending message is logical in a way - the system doesn¡®t accept you as owner for the approval operation, even though it has sent you the approval request to your email address.?
?
What about my question about the group where you are moderator? Do you have admin options there?
Kind regards Thomas |

*** Browser, 100%.? Never have used an app.

*** Yes.? I've tried two different browsers on three different computers.
Identical results in all cases.

*** Yes.? For the group where I'm now shown as "Moderator" (vs. "owner"),
I *do* see the "Admin" option.

Dan,
1 more thing to check - sounds completely odd, but worth trying:
Do your machines all have the correct date and time (incl. time zone)? I¡®ve seen very strange things happening when a machine with a wrong date or time accessed a server, and particularly authentication errors happening. Doesn¡®t hurt to check that.

Re: Owner Status Changed

I don't now and never have used an app.? My access is 100% computer-based.? I have three computers; my primary computer (presently being used for this message), a computer with a newly updated operating system (but same software as was used in the past to access my groups), and a backup computer that's a clone of my primary.? All three have been in use in the past week, and all successfully accessed my groups with correct privileges shown.
?
Yesterday, I received via e-mail an owner's notice of a message that requires review because it has an attachment.? All of my owned groups are set to require approval if attachments are included with a posted message.? This applies, even for my own messages with an attachment.
?
I clicked the "View message on line" link to review the pending message, and instead of taking me to that message as has always happened in the past, I was instead presented with the "Home" screen for the group, which I found odd because this has never happened before.? I tried logging out and back in, and did so with all three of my computers lest something have occurred with my primary computer .. all with the same results as I've described in earlier this thread.

Hi Dan,
what method are you using to access groups.io - browser, or app? Can you try a different method, and/or a different browser, and see what happens when you access the 2 groups where you lost ownership?
And for the group where you were owner but now have moderator status, do you still see the ?admin¡° option? For a moderator, this depends on the rights that have been granted to the moderator.
I suspect that this is a case for Mark, I agree with you that something seems to be odd in the configuration of the groups in groups.io.?
Kind regards

It's not "ownerless".? I'm still getting owner e-mail and messages sent to the "owner" address.
?
Problem is, I'm not shown as "owner" when I log into that group, and don't have "owner" or "moderator" privileges.? Two of my four groups are still showing my correct status.
?
To reiterate, I've changed nothing on my end.? I'm now not shown as "owner" no matter what computer I use.

I was wondering whether you see the same labels (owner, moderator, no label, ie. just member) on the app as you do on the web interface. Mine matches the web interface and is correct.

Re: Owner Status Changed

#groupowner

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýFacts in evidence: 1. I own four groups. 2. All groups use the same e-mail for my log in. 3. Two of the four still show "Owner" when selected, proving I'm logged in with the correct e-mail. 4. One of the four now shows me as a "Moderator" instead of "Owner". 5. One now shows nothing.? I'm just a "member" with posting privileges. 6. I log in, and can select any of the four groups using the same e-mail address.? If I were using the "wrong address", none of the groups would show me as "Owner".? The fact two of the four DO show me as "Owner" prove I'm using the correct e-mail address. 7. No one else has any access within the groups as a moderator or any other role. 8. Using a yahoo address for testing (unrelated to my official Groups.io address), I can send e-mail to the "Owner" e-mail address for the group where I'm no longer shown as "Owner" when I log in, and I receive the test message at my "Owner" e-mail address used for logging in. Conclusions based on the above: I *AM* using the correct e-mail address or none of the groups
would show me as "Owner".? Two of the four still show me as
"Owner".? (One shows me as "Moderator", not owner.) Though it's not showing me as "Owner" when I log into the subject group, I'm still on record with Groups.io as the owner (with my login e-mail address) or I would not have received the test message I sent to "main+owner@***.groups.io (Group name redacted). In your original post, you indicated you are the sole owner, implying no one else could change your status within the groups in question. If that's the case, then you not having ownership status would indicate an ownerless group, which I didn't think was possible. Ergo, there must be someone else with ownership status or you are indeed logged on with the wrong address.

Re: Owner Status Changed

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI'm basing it on the following: In the top menu bar, one of the options is the "Your Groups" drop-down box.? Clicking that drop-down displays the groups of which the user is a member.? All four of the groups I own are listed. Clicking on a group name opens that selected group, as all of you
know. Then, at the top of the "Menu" column on the left side of the
page is the "Home" option.? Two of my four groups still show me as
"Owner" with an "Owner" icon immediately adjacent to the "Home"
menu option. Those same two groups also show an "Administration" option as "Admin" in the menu column. The group in question no longer shows the "Owner" icon next to the "Home" option.? In fact, no icon of any sort is present.? The "Admin" option is also not shown. To the people asking if I'm logging in with the correct e-mail
address ... please note: I've owned these groups since Groups.io
was founded.? I'm one of the original members and owners, and own
four groups.? I use the same e-mail address for logging into all
four of my groups.? If I was logged in with an [otherwise]
incorrect e-mail address, it would not show the "Owner" icon for
two of the four groups. Something within Groups.io itself has changed my status.? I am the owner of all four of these groups.? Two of the groups still show the "Owner" icon next to the "Home" option in the menu column.? One of the four groups now shows me as a "Moderator" (with a "Mod" icon) instead of "Owner", and the 4th group doesn't show anything at all next to "Home". I have changed NOTHING on my end related to Groups.io.? I had to
upgrade my operating system on my main computer in the past two
days.? When I logged into Groups.io on the updated computer, the
aforementioned problems were noted.? Thinking something may have
changed, I then used a backup computer with all of the original
software and settings that had been working perfectly on Groups.io
just hours earlier.? Same result.? Subsequently, it doesn't appear
to be anything related to the updated computer. Please realize I teach computers and the Internet at the Ph.D and post-doctoral levels, and have a reasonably good grasp on how things work in that respect.? This appears something has changed within Groups.io as associated with my accounts. Dan

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDamn comma sound like to me, you need to make sure that you're logged in with the right email address. Re: Owner Status Changed
#access

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýNo, I don't have a second e-mail address registered as an owner. As stated in my original post, I *AM* the owner of four groups.?
I am the sole owner of all of the groups.? There are nNo other
owners or moderators.? Today, with no action taken on my part in
any manner other than logging in, I'm now suddenly shown as a
regular member of one group; a moderator of one group, and am
still shown as owner of the remaining two groups.? My ownership of
the group where I'm now just a "member" is proven by the fact I
was able to send an e-mail message to the "Owner" e-mail address
that's shown for the group, and I received it.? So ...somewhere
I'm still the registered owner as far as Groups.io is concerned.?
However, when I log into that group, I'm now at the status of a
regular member.? No "owner" privileges.? Somewhere within the
confines of Groups.io, a setting was changed to cause this. I'd like to know what I can do to restore my status as owner. Indications are .. the management of Groups.io won't be responsive unless it's a "Premium" group, which these aren't.? Our Groups.io sites were established for a non-profit organization, and we don't have the budget for a "Premium" group. Dan On 2/14/25 11:17 PM, Frances wrote:
