Re: No attachment/photo icon when composing on web
Helen,
I can see the messages you refer to but can't seem to reply. Those topics are moderated, so if you posted any replies there it may be a while before Mark gets around to approving them (or not). You haven't posted to the beta group before, so the other issue might be whether you've joined that group, which you would need to do before you can post there. I will just wait patiently till this useful feature is implemented -You're too polite. ;-) Mark welcomes suggestions and even reminders of suggestions. Ignore any naysayers from "the peanut gallery". Thanks Shal
I can see the messages you refer to but can't seem to reply. I will just wait patiently till this useful feature is implemented - hopefully BOTH for editing messages from message list AND for editing messages during moderation. Thanks again for your help - it is useful to at least know it is a real limitation! Helen |

Re: Create a private, invitation only, un-indexed group?
Slim,
?
I wish to create a group for my actual family members only. How do I do that? I do not want the group to be "findable" with search tools, but visible only to those invited. What Leeni said: use the group's Visibility setting in the Privacy section of the group's Settings page. That will keep the group out of Groups.io's directory and prevent non-members from reading it's messages. And as Brian mentioned, check the Restricted Membership box in the Spam Control section. Look also at the group's Calendar and Wiki Permissions, in the Features section of the Settings page, to make sure neither of them allow the public to view them.
?
You can't make the group's Home page completely disappear - it is always publicly visible. But the web search engines won't find it unless there's a link to it somewhere in public. You also can't make the group strictly "Invitation Only" -- anyone who finds the group's home page or otherwise knows the group's web or email address can always apply to join the group. Such people will appear on your group's Members page, in the Pending Approval list; but they are not actually members until and unless you approve them.

Well, a private group is already what you're looking for.? You'll note that if you activate the Find or Create a Group link on the web interface, the very top of the find page says, in big, bold letters:
Publicly Listed Groups?(by Popularity)
If you look in the Admin tools, Settings, Spam Control you'll find that you can very tightly control who can join using Restricted Membership.? I believe there is a setting for "by invitation only" somewhere, but right now I'm looking at a subgroup, not main group, and don't see it there.? Look through the Admin Settings for your current group to explore what the other options are.-- Brian ? ?Some questions don't have answers, which is a terribly difficult lesson to learn. ? ? ? ? ? ?~ Katharine Graham |

Thank you, Shal. ?That's helpful. ?I think I'll probably just link to the Groups.io page from our association page. ?I appreciate your input.

Scott,
?
?
Is there a way to inject code into a Squarespace website page so that our association members can view the ListServe group topics, etc. directly from our website?? Or is that even necessary. ? ?
That wouldn't be an easy way to go. I think it would only work if your group's Visibility setting is one that has publicly viewable messages. Otherwise the messages won't show for anyone not logged in to Groups.io.
?
With public messages (like GMF's) it might be possible to use a frame or iframe HTML element to display the messages from within your Squarespace site, but I've never tried anything like that.
?
The far simpler approach would be to put a link to your group's web address (home page) on your Squarespace site. Then if your association members click through the link they can choose whether to log in or not.
?
The Association I'm working with ... wants to have a ListServe for members to submit questions/issues for other members to help answer.? I'm trying to figure out whether there's a need to integrate the ListServe into our website somehow or just use it separately via email. ? ?
There's no need to integrate them. Having your association members use Groups.io purely as an email list (post and receive by email) is most likely the simplest approach.
?
That's what most of my PTA unit members to for my unit email list on Groups.io. Those members who take an interest can visit our list's web pages at Groups.io if they want to, but they don't need to.

Usernames on groups.io
Marcio
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi,I know this may well be considered a silly question but you know, sometimes we need to be the ones asking these. LOL So here goes... Can anyone tell me how, when, where (...) we use @username ? For example, I've set my username as @Starboy (as far as I know), but don't know what it means. I mean, I don't know how it could be used. I'd imagine this could be some kind of thing other users would use to "mention" the @ in question (such as the Twitter way), but I'm really not sure on this. If I'm right how it can be done? What happens when someone writes, for example, @Starboy in a message? Thanks for any help and sorry for the silly question, as I'm sure this is.
Cheers,

Communication standards, mathematical analogies (beyond "top posting vs bottomposting vs quoting")
As a relative newcomer to GMF, it was good to see an example of clear, courteous moderation from Shal.
My comments here are not about top/bottom posting, but follow on from some of the discussion on communication technologies and group standards in that thread. As is clear from the diversity of groups and their members shown in the posts, you need to pick such technologies and group standards as are appropriate to your group. There was a mention of a lowest common denominator in one post, but I think the appropriate arithmetical analogy is the highest common factor, and big decisions are: - identifying the highest common factor for in-group communication - achieving implementation of communication at that level - deciding how to handle outliers (members who cannot achieve even the highest common factor). To use the example of one of my groups, for the neighbourhood watch of which I am coordinator, I advocated e-mail as the primary communication mechanism as it seemed very clear to me that it was the lowest acceptable highest common factor of the 80-odd members, and we basically use groups.io as a reliable and private e-mail distributor. There were a few outliers among elderly residents who did not even have e-mail, so paper or landline phone was the fall-back for them (for critical messages), but the outliers have sadly diminished with time and mortality. Many members would have been happy to use social media of one kind or another (or a fuller use of groups.io capabilities) but I did not have the time to try migrating/upgrading and supporting the others. As it was, I had to give a moderate amount of support to some members, but not more than I had time to handle. Interestingly, in terms of the previous "posting" thread, I have tried on a few occasions to educate group members on the strong desirability of changing the subject of an e-mail if they are just replying to an old e-mail to send a message on a new topic, but I have given up as I do not have the time to keep fighting even such basic niceties, and anyway "search" will find any content I seek. HTML has one big drawback for me that plain text doesn't. Everybody who posts in HTML seems to have their own peculiar preferences for font size and style. Plain text lets my email handler?display messages using the font size *I* prefer, rather than what someone else wants to use.Virtually any modern e-mail client will allow the override of font choice and font size when reading, while retaining everything else. I'd be giving anyone who used 4 of 6 point size of any font grief, as that's "small print" in every sense of the word.? As to larger point sizes, well, I can read any of them. But my main point being that if one wants to override font and point size choices one does not care for, yet retain things like bold, italic, embedded links, etc., it's simple to do under most modern e-mail clients. It's any owner's right to set a group to plain text, but all members should be made aware of that upon joining, as it wouldn't be the default expectation these days.? It also saves them doing any number of things they might normally do with regard to formatting as they then know it would be stripped.? I know how to go back to old-style indications for _underline_ and *italic* (or is that bold) and similar and would use those conventions if I know I'm going to be converted to plain text. In this day and age HTML is the de facto standard, and any random user not explicitly informed otherwise has every reason to believe that HTML format is going to be used. ? -- Brian ? ?Some questions don't have answers, which is a terribly difficult lesson to learn. ? ? ? ? ? ?~ Katharine Graham |

Can a link to the cloud site be somehow attached to my group?Yes. You can put it in your wiki, on your group's home page, or in an [html-formatted] message. Messages and a wiki page can be made "sticky" to remain pinned at the top of your group's messages page, if that's desirable. Putting such a link in the photos section itself is more problematical. Be sure the link URL that you use is public. You don't want your subscribers to click on it only to be thwarted by a cloud service logon screen. ?
