Generally, you open a chat, select a topic, and if you click the corresponding checkbox, it creates a one-time email notification to the group. Subscribers must log in and join the chat via the "Chats" entry in the left-side menu bar.

For each chat, there is only one chat window, so you cannot see what others are typing in real time...only what they finally submit. There is an auto-refresh, but not all browsers seem to recognize it, so you may have to manually refresh your screen every so often. And it often happens that people will join a chat to see what's going on but not type anything. Unlike Facebook messaging, there is no indicator to show that anybody is composing a response.?

My club has attempted to use a chatroom to hold ad hoc board meetings, but folks struggled with the user interface and messages crossed in the ether and there was no way to really chair the meeting...so that was pretty much a disaster. We also maintained an open chat for about a month where subscribers could post things that they didn't necessarily want to be emailed to the whole group. People checked in, and said things like "this is kinda cool"...but the novelty soon wore off and I eventually closed it due to inactivity.

Generally speaking, I'm not impressed; but the very nature of the feature is pretty limited, so I don't have any suggestions for improvement, either. If you have a long list of subscribers and many of them use the web interface it might work out better for you, but it seems unlikely that groups.io can compete with Skype, or that Mark is really motivated to try.

In that example, it means that non-members with a Hotmail account that apply to join your group (either via the WEB UI or by sending a subscribe request email) will be rejected. It also means that messages sent to your group from non-members with a Hotmail address will be rejected (even if you have Allow Non Members to Post set in Admin > Settings > Message Policies).

It only affects new registration requests and messages from the time you create the banned list. In that example, any existing member with a Hotmail address can continue to post as before.

? ? ? ? ? ?The group already has a chat subgroup, and what we're trying to do is to get the membership to ask themselves whether what they're about to post actually deals with the main group topic and, if not, use the chat group for it instead.? ?Groups.io does not, to my knowledge, have a mechanism like I'm accustomed to at Bleeping Computer where a moderator can take a topic and shuttle it to another forum (subgroup or main group within a cluster, in the case of Groups.io).? ?The only current option is locking with a message that said topic should be initiated on the subgroup.? I was hoping that, as part of a lock message, I might be able to include a Follow-up To of some sort and say that if you reply to this message the topic will automatically continue on the Chat subgroup, rather than having to be created manually.

? ? ? ? ? ? The group/subgroup implementation on Groups.io is sorely in need of improvement in my opinion.? It has such great potential, but subgroups are essentially hidden from the main group if all you visit is the messages page for a group.? This can't really be remedied on the e-mail side, but these things could be a lot more visible on the web side, and the ability to shuttle content here and there within any group/subgroup structure would be a major improvement.

A further consideration is that member notices can be generated with the group name in the subject and message text so you will need to manually update these.

It worked! I clicked on the address directly from the group which opened in Thunderbird and sent an email.

I doubt there's any cause for concern, given what the DMARC reports are for. It might mean that one or more of your subscribed groups had an increase in membership, but maybe not even that.

All mentioning groups.io as the issue.

Groups.io IS the issue.

But it is neither a threat nor a malfunction nor anything else of great significance.

The issue is that Groups.io passes your email header From address through without munging (replacing) it. That simple fact means that your messages fail DMARC authentication at the receiving service because the message says it came From your domain, but it was delivered to the receiving service by Groups.io's outbound server, not yours. (And it carries Groups.io's DKIM signature, not your domain's).

This would only become a concern were you to change your DMARC policy from "none" to either "quarantine" or "reject".

But Groups.io has a work-around for that. If you receive individual messages by email you may notice that some of your fellow members' emails have munged From addresses. Those members using AOL.com and yahoo.com for example.

the odd thing is I've been agroups.io member for over a year.? Have had my records setup for protonmail longer than that which required I setup SPF, DKIM and? DMARC.? i am used to seeing 1 or 2 a day.

But suddenly getting over 10 two days in a row is concerning. All mentioning groups.io as the issue.

I did sign up for?dmarcian.com and changed my dmarc to send the reports to them.? I'll see of the next couple of days how they get interpreted..

I have a group with about 70 members. I have invited a person 3 times and he says he has never received the invitation. I know I am sending to the right email and he has checked his junk folder. This time I told him to send an email to [email protected]. He did and copied me so I could see it. So far the request has not appeared in the group. What am I doing wrong?

Through a bit of testing, we have already worked out what it does and when.? The only extra thing to add that Bruce mentioned to me on a private message is:

if you attempt to join/apply using the web interface, a red banner will show up at the top of the page stating?You are not allowed to subscribe to the group with that domain.

Likes of already stated constructive criticism is better than unexplained Don't Likes.

Personally, I'd be far more inclined to support the removal of the Like function than the creation of a Vote Down function.

Discussion should be on the merits of a suggestion (constructive criticism) - not stating like (or dislike) which just bloats the number of messages

I don't know how much or who pays any attention to Likes, however I use it when I support an idea, but don't have anything new or constructive to add. More people should do that than to send essentially 'me too' messages.

Just because I might not like something that might be useful to someone else, I shouldn't campaign to deny them - which is what a Don't Like seems to be, and the point of most negative messages.

Both just scream "social media" to me, and there's very little about Groups.io that is, in any meaningful sense, social media-esque.

I'm not sure Likes are 'screamed', because one has to go look for them.

Likes could be indicated in the archive as a black circle with a white number in it at the end of that individual Message Subject to make it easier to see what messages were liked. I don't think that would make Groups.io 'social media', but it might encourage (at least users who read messages at the Website) from posting 'me too' messages... Perhaps a sort of Messages by the number of Likes could be helpful and by making Like more meaningful.
