Re: How do we unmoderate ourselves?

Randi,

It is really irritating that all of my posts are moderated and I am
the group owner.
As far as message moderation goes there's no difference between an owner/mod or any other member. You have to look to the Posting Privileges of your subscription, and the group's Moderation setting to determine why your messages are moderated.

There is an action that says ¡°approve and unmoderate¡± and I
use it each time and it never unmoderates me.
I believe that function changes your Posting Privilege to "Use Group Moderation Setting". But that will still result in your messages being moderated if your group has the "Moderated" box checked. The function is intended for use with groups with the "New Users Moderated" box checked, not the "Moderated" box.

If it is your intent that all (or the vast majority) of your group members be moderated at all times then checking the "Moderated" box is correct, and to override that for yourself choose "Override: not moderated" at the bottom of your membership page (click on your row in the Members or Moderators list).

If, on the other hand, you expect to unmoderate most members after they prove themselves then choose "New Users Moderated" instead of "Moderated" for the group setting. With that choice you can let members be automatically unmoderated after a set number of approved messages, or manually unmoderate them using the "Approve and Unmoderate" button on their next pending message.

Good idea.? I may end up doing that too.? Don't forget the new one that was introduced recently, #cal-cancelled.

Re: Running the transfer a second time to pick up photos missed the first time

Dale,

I tried using the advice suggested with only the "photos" box checked,
but nothing happened and the transfer did not even register as a
pending transfer in the transfer status drop down box.
Clue number 1 that something's wrong.

I am not the owner who initiated the first transfer. Could that be
the issue?
I strongly suspect that is the issue.

It explains why you didn't see the prior transfer in the Existing Transfers list - only the account which initiated the transfer has access to that.

It probably also explains why your attempts have failed. One of the requirements to do a re-transfer is to delete the record of the existing (prior) transfer; something you couldn't do and the other owner probably didn't know to do.

If there's reason the other owner can't handle the new transfer then I think Gerald's right and you'd need help from Support to clear things out so that you can start fresh, or maybe jump-start your transfer.

Re: Database help please

Pamala,

I think my problem lies in the fact that I want to move a row from one
spot to another.
The key is that you have to do that by re-arranging the rows (lines) in the CSV file.

The ID numbers won't be included in the exported CSV, and they will be automatically assigned, in the order of the lines in the CSV file, when imported.

Re: Database help please

Dear Shal, thank you so much for all the trouble you have gone to.
I think my problem lies in the fact that I want to move a row from one spot to another.
I haven't had time to spend exploring this more today as I have been extremely busy doing other things.
I will, however, study your email closely and try one more time before giving in.

This may take me several days as I have commitments, meetings etc. all week up to Saturday.
I will let you know how it goes and also take screenshots as I work through it so I have a record to show you if it doesn't work.

God Bless,
Pamela

Re: suddenly many yahoo.com members are bouncing, but not all of them

Ruthie, Frances, Ken, Jim,

The Email Deliver History says, "554 delivery error: dd Sorry, your
message to XXXXXX@... cannot be delivered. This mailbox is
disabled (554.30). - mta4486.mail.gq1.yahoo.com"
It seems that Yahoo is doing some spring cleaning of dormant accounts, and that's the message you get for accounts that have been disabled.

As some have mentioned in beta, clearing out accounts that haven't been signed in for over a year has been a longstanding policy at Yahoo, but only intermittently enforced.

Bottom line:

These are likely to be subscribers that transferred over from your Yahoo Group. They are likely to be No Email, but even if not they haven't been reading your group's messages (otherwise they wouldn't be dormant).

So my advice is to let them go. Either ignore them or (if you prefer a tidier Bouncing list) remove them.

Shal

FWIW:
I took this heads-up as a prompt to go and sign in to each of my handful of test accounts at Yahoo. It looks like I'll lose one of them because even though I know its password, Yahoo requires that I verify one of its recovery addresses/phone numbers. Unfortunately that one has only one recovery option, and it is a long-dead email address at my former ISP.

In that condition, the only recovery option is to speak to an agent. I could do that, as I have record of the "secrets" I set for that account, but I'm not going to bother.

Gerald Boutin

I would suggest sending the details to [email protected]

Running the transfer a second time to pick up photos missed the first time

I know Shal Farley mentioned this as an option on another message, but I couldn't find it now.? Our group is signed up as a paid group and was able to successfully move everything but the photos to groups.io. ? I believe photos was down on Yahoo at the time. ? It is now back up.

I tried using the advice suggested with only the "photos" box checked, but nothing happened and the transfer did not even register as a pending transfer in the transfer status drop down box.? I figured that since [email protected] was already a moderator in the old group that no action would be required there.? When nothing happened,? I deleted and then re-entered [email protected] as a member.? That user has apparently accepted the invitation, but I did not receive the notice requesting that I make them a moderator.? I made them a moderator with all privileges except to delete the group.? Still, nothing.

The status of transfer drop down still shows nothing, not even the completed first transfer.? I am not the owner who initiated the first transfer.? Could that be the issue?? Any thoughts on what the issue is?

You may also want to do that for #cal-invite.? That's the one that seems to get abused the most.? It sends a new one every time someone edits an event and some people 'need' to make 20 or 30 edits. ;>)? I set all of my #cal- tags (invite, notice, and reminder) to moderated, in case we need to have one post.

Re: Send Invite To Group (tagged with #cal-invite) needs to default to unchecked

Thanks Andy,

I made the following changes this morning. It has not been tested yet
In the hashtags settings, I was able to disable emails to the group that have the has tag?#cal-notice.? Hopefully this will fix it??

Question about Files management #files #folders

Hello all,

I manage a small private group for the board of directors of a nonprofit and I have 2 questions.

1) We manually migrated about 12 years of files from Yahoo a few months back and they are a big mess, with obscurely named files in all sorts of folders. I am determined to clean things up by renaming and reclassifying (via folders).

When I do a Search on Files, I don't see what folder each file is in. Is this something that can be achieved by changing settings? Or does it seem like a valid/beneficial change request?

2) Is there a way to attach hashtags to files? I would like to use one or two hashtags to cross-reference files to a particular location and/or year so that they can be searched in this manner. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance,
Chris?

I don't know where you or your members are located, but the words "Data Protection" spring to mind.

The European GDPR's tentacles reach further than you might imagine, Groups of which I am a member do not have any "personal" information beyond members' email addresses, and IIRC they are covered by the Groups.io Privacy Policy. Start collecting your own and that will not be covered by the "corporate" Policy, and you will / may need to have your own Data Protection / Privacy Policy and have a positive means of preventing the misuse of any personal information that you collect.

Chris.

Re: Send Invite To Group (tagged with #cal-invite) needs to default to unchecked

Hi Jim,

it was changed to be that was in Feb 2018; I'm not up to date with the reasoning behind that.

I'm not aware that a user or group setting can override that default.? If there is, it could be useful to know.

I've now had three test messages sent.? An image attachment from a Apple desktop and another from an Apple mobile. Both messages came through fine and the images were added to the emailed photos album.

The third was sent from an Apple desktop with a PDF document attached, which also came through fine.

Were they images, or something else? I suspect this guy simply hasn't mastered his technology, but I'm not going to go out and buy an iPhone just to find out.

The proliferation of embedded images that get duplicated by people who reply without trimming has become intolerable. Pending resolution of this (and similar*) problems I have switched my groups to plain-text message delivery.?

Samuel,

However, when I view the member list, I can't see (in the list) which
members have notes.? So, is there a way to make that visible?

Not that I know of.

I've been noodling on a suggestion for beta about this, but haven't written it up yet (looking like a busy work week). She specifically needs a column that can be sorted by, not just a badge or other indication. You can spearhead the suggestion if you like.

Re: Help: Earthlink now bouncing emails sent to *me* from Groups.io groups I own

Charles

You mention that Junu and Virginia presumably unbounced themselves.? How is that done?? What is the Unbounce Operation?

One unbounces by responding to a bounce probe. I believe either by email reply or by clicking a link.

Note though that this will not change Earthlink's behavior. If they're still blocking some messages addressed to you then you're likely to end up with Bouncing status again.

Also, what does the Bounce Probe do? ?

Tests whether the email account receives messages from Groups.io

I sent one to those affected and see in the Recent Successful Delivery that the message was accepted.

I think the member must take an overt action to complete the unbounce - either by replying to the message or clicking on a link in it. Though on a technical basis I'm not sure why the acceptance itself wouldn't be considered sufficient.
