Re: Group not showing up in my groups list?

Gerald Boutin

I stand corrected. Another "factoid" learned long ago.

I did a bit more research and agree that there are multiple interpretations about punctuation characters in the part of the email address before the "@". However, it is considered by some as a good belt and suspenders plan to do some filtering for Gmail email addresses for "." and "+".

No.

So long as it is syntactically correct the email standard leaves the
semantic interpretation of the user name part entirely up to the
receiving domain.

To get it completely correct Groups.io would need a table of exceptions
by domain to know which characters to ignore or otherwise treat specially.

For example, some mail services (IIRC Gmail) allowed the use of a plus
sign in an email address to ignore the plus sign and all following
characters. This was touted as a cheap way to get disposable email
addresses for the purpose of giving different vendors different
addresses so as to know which vendor sold you address.

That usage I think inspired Groups.io's use of plus as a command
lead-in. As opposed to Y!Groups use of hyphen.

It would be a far worse error to consider them the same with a domain
that doesn't. Then you'd have two or more users who can't separate their
accounts.

Re: action on support tickets

Mark's vacation notice stated "Replies to support emails will be delayed during this time. Also, group transfers will be delayed as well."
I interpret that to mean slower than normal response, as opposed to no response until he gets back.? IIRC, he's looking into hiring some help.

D'oh! So much simpler than trying to unite the accounts.

Then the non-dot account can be ignored, or deleted, or whatever.

And this is a battle I'm having with Apple. Some person just lately is using mizelly@... and purchases a lot from Apple. My email addy is miz.elly@... and I've had it for years... and have never purchased anything at Apple.
When Apple tries to contact this person, the mail comes to me. Fortunately Apple is being quite understanding when I explained about that period. But it makes me wonder just where some mail may end up.
I considered changing the addy and most likely will once this mess is cleared up.

Re: re time for emails to arrive

Win,

Am I interpreting it correctly when I think that the email was held up
for 2 hours at my ISP before it was sent to groups.io?
Yes, but it doesn't say whether your ISP was holding onto the message, or whether it was having trouble connecting to Groups.io.

That message would be something to ask your ISP about: their logs might indicate what the problem was. I'd be interested in seeing that message's header, if you don't mind sending it off-list.

Hm... I could have sworn that the Pricing page used to say that Premium groups got priority support. Not that I know if that would have made a difference, given that Mark is on vacation.

Re: Storage help

Cathy,

I don't want to have to pay for extra storage so how do I get rid of all the attachments so

?In the ?Message Formatting section of your group's Settings page you can select Delete old attachments in the Out of Space drop-box. That will prevent your group from exceeding its storage quota, but it will mean that older messages will lose their attachments.

This does not happen please..

?The upgrade to a Premium group would not happen automatically. If you're out of space you won't be allowed to add more content until you make room. For message attachments the two choices (in the Out of Space control) are to delete old attachments or to bounce new messages with attachments.

Re: Group not showing up in my groups list?

Merle,

It turns out that my friend issued an invite to me at my gmail account but it didn't contain the dot between my first and last names.

?You may need [email protected] to unravel this for you, but you can try treating the non-dot address as if it is a separate account from the dotted one. That is:

Try logging out, then logging back in, omitting the dot. If it won't accept your password, try using Email me a link to log in, again omitting the dot. Verify that you are now logged into the non-dot account by hovering over your name in the upper right corner of any Groups.io page.

If that works, you can try to merge this account into your correct one by changing its email address to include the dot.

The invite found its way into my gmail inbox and I accepted the invite, but she also made me an owner of the list. What does one do to resolve this conflict?

The behavior is that when I log in under my valid email address, I see all of the groups that were originally there but not the new group that my friend created. When I go into groups.io in the invite email, I can only see the landing page for the group and the list of groups that were originally there NOT including the new group. Kind of weird. Re: Best policy for group ownership change #groupowner

Beth,

? ... and gave it another Owner over a year ago.?
?
If you haven't already, it may be worth double-checking to be sure the other owner does in fact still display the Owner badge in Main-A's Members list (or Moderators list).

Can SubGroups be deleted the same way, without impacting the Main group?

?Yes.

But the odd thing here is that I believe that every Mod/Owner of a primary group is implicitly a Mod/Owner of all subgroups. So I wouldn't have expected this to be the reason.

? I want to be sure I'd be leaving Main-A intact and functioning under its other Owner
?...

?The other option I suppose would be to explicitly add the other owner to those subgroups and make him/her owner of those as well. Then their fate would be up to him/her.
?
and assume this would have no impact on Main-B where I am the sole Owner.

?Correct. Leaving one group would not affect the other.

I suggest that you solicit the help of the group owner. Send an email to GROUPNAME-owner@...?and ask for assistance.?

The owner can:

-- Promote you to a co-owner, or
-- As a Moderator, give you the necessary member management permissions, or
-- Do the invitation and the promotion of the transfer agent for you.

In part, this safeguard exists to keep Y!G subscribers from stealing a group. Not saying that's what you're doing, but it does happen.

Hope this helps,

Re: Group not showing up in my groups list?

Merle,

When I logged into , all of my groups except this one show up.

This most likely means that your membership in that group (and owner role) were given to "you" under a different email address. You'll need to log out, then log in under that other email address to verify this.

If when logged in under that other address you do see that other group, and can access it as an owner, you can either keep things this way (two separate logins under two separate email addresses) or you can merge this other account into your preferred account (address) by changing this other one's email address to match the preferred one.

Re: Transfer from Yahoo #transfer #yahoo

dd,

I am not able to invite [email protected] because Yahoo says:
?
Moderator can't invite or add new members

?That would mean that you don't have the moderator privilege to Invite and add members.?

What now?

?The bad news is that likely means that you also do not have the privilege to Add, remove, and change moderator privileges?, and lacking that you won't be able to complete your part of Step 3.

But just to be sure, go to the Moderators tab of the group's Manage Members page and click on any moderator's row (green crown), for example your own. If an Edit Membership box comes up you're in luck. You have the privilege to change privileges, and can give yourself the privilege to invite members.

Otherwise, unless you can solicit the help of an owner of the group, or a moderator with the needed privileges, you are pretty much out of luck as far as the easy Yahoo Group transfer is concerned. Your option is to use Invite or Direct Add (premium groups only) to bring the Manage Members list of the Y!Group into the Groups.io group you created for Step 0.

If the Y!Group has more than 1000 members there are ways around that, refer to on Yahoo Groups.

Group not showing up in my groups list?

A friend created a new group and invited me to it. I accepted the invite and can get into the group. However, she then made me an owner, but I cannot access the admin settings in the group, even though I can get to the member landing page of it. When I logged into groups.io, all of my groups except this one show up. Can anyone give me a clue as to what is going on? Thanks.
