Re: Footers again

Sharon,

What happens is someone forwards a message to someone who doesn¡¯t know
about the list. The only link to connect is with the owner.
That's a valid type of viral marketing. Though some types of groups wouldn't want to encourage members to pass around their messages (read that as: would prevent it if they could).

Personally, I think the long footers on messages don¡¯t matter. Much
better to have the links people need to use.
You could do it using the Message Footer box in the Message Formatting section of your group's Settings page. Perhaps something like:

-----
Receive this message from a friend? You can have your own subscription! Visit us here: /g/GroupManagersForum
or send a blank email message to: [email protected]
-----

The Message Footer box is plain text, so those links must be spelled out as URLs, but they are "linkified" if the outgoing message is formatted. Oh, and use your own group's name, of course!

The introductory sentence serves two purposes: it directs the recipient to the right links, but it also suggests to the member that it is ok to forward the message to a friend that might be interested in the group.

Footers again

I couldn¡¯t figure out why I was getting so many messages to ¡°owner" from someone who wanted to subscribe. Then I looked at the footer again:

There is no subscribe link. I have to do it myself or send them instructions. 3 this week.

Personally, I think the long footers on messages don¡¯t matter. Much better to have the links people need to use.

Re: New moderator - could use a little help, sticky wiki, wikis referencing other wikis, adding #hashtags reference to group home page #hashtags

Peter,

That led me wonder how I could expand that to reference all the other
#hashtag's and their associates wikis.
So the first confusion I'm having is that hashtags aren't associated with wikis, they're a feature of messages (topics).

My idea was to create a "master" wiki named something like
"GeneralInfo" and within that, emplace references and text that would
allow people to get a 1 sentence explanation of a given #hashtag and
"click through" to the appropriate #hashtag and/or the associated
wiki.
This GeneralInfo page sounds a little like GMF's Home wiki page, which is mostly a list of links to other Wiki pages.

But Hashtags already have an index of their own, and each hashtag can have a description. Though admittedly in GMF's hashtags the only one I've even briefly described is #admin.
/g/GroupManagersForum/hashtags
Looks like the beta group has descriptions for only about three of their hashtags:

In both groups I think that's because most of the hashtags were created implicitly by use - someone used the hashtag in a message subject. Then no one (no moderator) went back and added a description for it.

I don't see a way to define a direct wiki URL.
I'm not sure what you mean.

When you create a wiki page it is given an URL based on the Title field. After you Save the new page you can visit the page and copy it's URL out of your browser's address bar. Something like this:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Footers

The URL in my browser is a search algorithm if I click on a specific
#hashtag, not a URL reference.
That's what hashtags do. They don't bring you to a place, they bring you a list of the topics containing that hashtag (in the topic subject).

Any suggestions or alternatives?
I hope my answers above give you a fresh perspective, and maybe a fresh set of questions.

Re: Multiple Group Owner: Alternate Group Colors? #groupowner

Well, as it turned out, the table background color was not saved. It showed the color on the WYSIWYG html editor but when I went back to the Messages page...[unpleasant surprise]...the color attribute had been stripped.

I still recommend creating some kind of Sticky Wiki page, though, to help you keep track of what group you're in. I'm looking for help on that topic too but am not finding that either, but you might want to read this thread instead.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

New moderator - could use a little help, sticky wiki, wikis referencing other wikis, adding #hashtags reference to group home page #hashtags

Hi,
I am a new moderator of a groups.io group and am trying to figure out a few things.

My apologies if sending a message is an inappropriate method to ask these questions, but I read available material, looked up this group's #hashtag sections, and played around with different test cases.

As the title suggests, I am having a few problems organizing my groups.io group.

I see that there is only 1 sticky wiki, which appears at the top of the Messages page.
That led me wonder how I could expand that to reference all the other #hashtag's and their associates wikis.
My idea was to create a "master" wiki named something like "GeneralInfo" and within that, emplace references and text that would allow people to get a 1 sentence explanation of a given #hashtag and "click through" to the appropriate #hashtag and/or the associated wiki.

Same thing with a wiki.

Any suggestions or alternatives?
To sum up, I am trying to have a cascading group of #hashtags and associated wikis able to redirect from one to another (e.g. wiki1 references wiki2 and wiki2 references wiki1 - with a single-click from the user).

Thanks.

ANYTHING to help distinguish what group we are working in.
You can't change the background for the entire group, but you can create a separate "sticky wiki" page for each group and change the background color of that. The "sticky wiki" appears at the top of the Messages, regardless of what view you use.

Something like this will work...hopefully you browser won't try to render it.

<table style="background-color: red;">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>
<p style="text-align: center; color: white"><strong>YOUR TEXT HERE</strong></p>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>

Hope this helps,

Miichael,

We Moderators on our group clearly understand the end time for our group's event but quite a number of our members do not ¨Cor actively choose not to, and so continue to post after the closing time of the event.

And if you happen to be curious as to what this event is: The event in question is 24 hours on one single day per month during which we relax our posting guidelines and allow members to post most anythng on- or off-topic to our group's subject & intent. It acts as a steam vent for those members who seem to want to post off-topic stuff during the rest of the month.

I reset it to 100 and that works in Files. Who knew Infinite Scroll was not universal, but the other choices are.

Thanks

What was said said:
We post a Reminder Notice for it to the group several days in advance each month saying that the Event is coming up. And for the Event itself we manually post one notice to Open it and another to Close it on the last Friday, the date of which varies from month to month.

Reminders sound like Reminders of an Event in the Calendar.
The Calendar functions well for Events that are First, Second, Third, Fourth, or Fifth, but doesn¡¯t seem to understand or have provision for ¡°Last¡±.

The "we manually post one notice to Open it and another to Close it on the last Friday, the date of which varies from month to month¡± statement refers to Open and Close notices, which sounds like they are in addition to a Reminder that the Calendar might be sending out.

Any good reason why the concept of ¡°Last¡± can¡¯t be understood and including in the Groups.io Calendar?
It would be another way that Groups.io would be the superior email List service.

Re: Seeking a Tutorial for new users

A Youtube tutorial would help non-technical users. A video tutorial could replace a ton of email exchanges with folks who have only passing familiarity with computer lingo. I am not set up for video production and I don't have much experience? with it, but if i did, I would volunteer to work on one. I think it would save me time in the long game.

It should be reported to telus.net since they're bouncing messages for some reason.? There is no guaranteed way to get delivery to be reliable.? Some services are more prone to problems than others though.

Re: 550 5.1.0 <[email protected]> sender rejected

Edited

Hi,

I have a member complaining about frequent requests to unbounce his email address with almost the same message as in the subject line. In his case, it is :-

550 5.1.0 <[email protected]> sender rejected

His email address is at telus.net. When I look back in this member's email history, I see many bounce messages each day going back to 1 May. In the activity log, I see pairs of messages like this :-

Email to [redacted]@telus.net is no longer bouncing via web ?
Email to [redacted]@telus.net is bouncing via system
Is there any advice we can give the member in this case, or is it an issue we should be reporting to Support at Groups.io?

Regards
John Russell

Infinite scroll

I've set "Infinite scroll" in:
Account: Preferences: Items Per Page
and that worked for:
Admin: Members
but not for:
Files

How can I set "Files" and anything else to "Infinite scroll"?
