Indeed there is, and the process appears to be very simple; just set up a "Pending Subscription" message in the Admin section. (Admin - Settings - Member Notices)

Mark also put a very helpful post in the above thread; see which nicely explains the relevant sequence of events following a membership request. The Group for which I am a Moderator is in the process of setting this up; at the moment we are just tinkering with the content! Up to now we have been doing it manually, which is a chore.

Chris

Re: No introductory message with subscription applications?

We set up our group as restricted but since we have a website also when someone attempts to ask to join they receive a custom message the gives them th link to our join request form and it's up to them to complete from there..? Once we get the form submission, we review and if ok, approve them.
You could tell someone trying to join that they must send a message to the owners with certain required info for entry to the group.
If they don't comply, you did the best you could.? If they comply you can let them in however you do that.
Since we are a premium group we just direct ingest them and they get another? email with appropriate instructions and a link to the wiki

Re: No introductory message with subscription applications?

All of the groups I manage are for Amateur radio ( aka Ham radio).? It would be nice to include a simple question that they could answer and provide the reply to us in the application message.

If you are a ham radio operator, please provide your call _______ or a short note about why you would like to join our group ____________________________________.

That is all we need to see,? Other groups might like to ask a different question.?

Message transfer from Yahoo #hashtags

Southenders Admin

Just wondering--I'm a few days away from getting my members to approve the transfer over from Yahoo. How are transferred messages treated if the new group requires a tag on all messages?

Since we're probably going to go to the RSVP model, I'd appreciate some feedback on its utility.

Thanks

One can Direct Add multiple members of the main group to a subgroup even in the basic account. But new members of the main group are not automatically added to the subgroups. I think that should be an optional setting for each subgroup.

No introductory message with subscription applications?

I'm getting subscription applications from folk I can't ID from the email address. In the Yahoo group that this io group spawned from I used to get a quick 'Hi, I'm so and so and do so and so....' as they were prompted for a short message before pressing the join button. There doesn't appear to be similar on io, you just press join and a sterile notification appears in my inbox. Can't see anything in settings, have I missed anything?

Re: Can someone explain to me... unsubscribed for marking a message as spam

Mark has edited the "removal messages" as suggested. Obviously I have thanked him (profusely!) for his help with this on the betagroup where he announced the change, and I have asked for a copy of the message to members to be posted so that it can be incorporated into the wiki.

I will undertake the necessary edit to add the new format, but I am tempted to keep the old format in place for a little while so that anyone reading the wiki can see how things evolved. The old format can be removed at a later date.

Chris

Re: Questions on SubGroups

Beth,

1. A group can have unlimited subgroups, but subgroups can not have
their own subgroups correct?
Correct.

(Hint, that would be very helpful for a future enhancement)
Beta is the official "suggestion box" for Groups.io, they do not monitor GMF.

2. Does the subgroup inherit the settings of the main group?
No.

But it does inherit the primary group's owners (and moderators, I think), regardless of whether they are added to the subgroup's Members list.

3. Is there a way to bulk add all members of the group to a subgroup?
Nope. Just a list of primary members with columns of checkboxes per subgroups on the Admin > Subgroups page of the primary group.

4. A subgroup can be renamed, but there seems to be a delay on the
email address hitting the "new" subgroup; they tend to get lost for a
while.
The internet's domain name system (DNS) can take a while to catch up with changes to domain listings, but that should only affect changes to the "subdomain" part of the primary and subgroup addresses.

It is also possible that browser caching of web pages will confuse appearances, and of course auto-complete and address book entries kept by members' email interfaces will remember the old name.

Is it OK to rename the subgroup (thinking of dividing data by
meeting date as an example).
5. After the subgroup has been renamed, can the old subgroup name be
used over and over
Yes.

(again meeting types of data - have a subgroup named CurrentMeeting
and after the meeting is over rename to JanMeeting, then recreate
CurrentMeeting to use again) - is there a better way?
I think I would skip the CurrentMeeting idea and just name it JanMeeting from the get-go. Then you don't have to do anything about it until next year.

6. I have created a test group with subgroups. I have added several
members to the group and subgroup and tried to send messages - both
through "new topic" and email. The members aren't getting the emails
- just the owner. Any ideas what I haven't set up correctly (e.g.
stupid mistakes to look for)
...
The one flaky part of this is that both of those unique email
addresses eventually forward to my email address (all are gmail), but
groups.io wouldn't know that.
I think you've bumped into the "Gmail won't show you multiple copies of the same message" issue.

That is, your "members" are being sent, and are receiving, their copies of the messages. But the Gmail interface where you're looking sees three copies of a message with the same Message-ID field in the header. It decides you don't need to see the duplicates.

This is the same behavior, by the way, which causes members of Yahoo Groups (and other list services) not to "receive" their own messages back from the group. They do, but Gmail won't show them because they are "duplicates" of the sent message. Groups.io works around that via a setting in your account.

The solution, for your testing purposes, is to look for the "members" copies of the messages in those members' Gmail inboxes.

Re: Filter topics

Steve,

I realize you can filter #hashtags in your message delivery, am I
correct there is no way to filter topics or #hashtags when viewing the
site?
Currently no way within the context of a single group. But on the Groups.io home page you can look at messages filtered by Mute or Follow in lists that combine all of your subscriptions.

Yes, it's going to be part of the (mythical;) "notification overhaul."

Yahoo transfers #transfer

Just posted on Beta by Mark:

Hi All,
As of right now, I believe I'm caught up with all Yahoo Group transfers. If you are waiting on me for a group transfer, please contact support, as it may have slipped through the cracks.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Transferring UK Yahoo Group SUCCESS

I tried that and was told they could not transfer.? So I had to start from scratch and because I am new to all this it has been a trying time.? Especially trying to find how to successfully load member lists and other documents.? Cheers.

Yes, that's correct. Someone suggested it recently on beta, so you could get into that conversation if you want the feature.

That's a nice thought, but Mark said it was just an artifact of the way he happened to implement the feature. He always meant to change it, but he said that so far no one was complaining. Until now. ;)

I believe you are correct. It has been suggested in beta, but that was two years ago and there's not been much discussion on that front.

Re: Questions on SubGroups

Thanks Frances,
I did a direct add for two different members into the subgroup, and neither are getting the subgroup emails when I either send from "new topic" or "reply to group". I get the email as the owner, but they don't.? They are set up to receive individual emails.? The one flaky part of this is that both of those unique email addresses eventually forward to my email address (all are gmail), but groups.io wouldn't know that.
I have deleted them and re-added with no success. I'm sure I have either done something that I shouldn't have or not set something up and was hoping that someone had already encountered the issue.
Thanks again
Beth

P.S. My thinking is that once you get above five, you're beginning to defeat the purpose of having hashtags.?
