Ellen -- Groups.io does not natively support SMS or MMS. To get that to work you would have to set up some kind of forwarding.

Re: Question about a texting function

There is a chat function, but not texting
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Chat-Overview

There was a discussion in Beta some time ago - with a reply from Mark saying texting could be added, but as part of a paid group (service?)

Mark is looking for beta testers for an iPhone app. Not sure what functionalities will be available.

That's correct.

The impression I got from the help files is that the group address change after creating a subgroup is non-reversible.

Issue replying to Full Digest with required hashtags #bouncedemails #reply-to-group

Hello all,

I help maintain a list of over 2,000 members, recently migrated over from Yahoo groups. One of our members recently brought to my attention that there seems to be an unusual issue replying to messages in a Full Digest when a hashtag is required.

Our subgroups requires hashtags or the message will bounce, and when someone clicks "reply to group" in a Full Digest under some topics, the hashtag is not automatically carried over, so the message bounces.?

Has anyone else noticed this? It doesn't appear to happen with all topics, so I think perhaps the hashtag only gets stripped from those topics initiated via web, while emailed topics maintain the hashtag.

The only workaround I could suggest to the poster was to look at the hashtag in the topic summary, copy it over, and paste it into the reply subject line when replying via email. But this seems like a design flaw.

If anyone else has noticed this and has suggestions or a workaround, or know if Groups.io is aware of this particular issue, I'd appreciate you letting me know.

Thanks!

Upon further testing, this reversion appears to happen only if you did not change the main group's name from "main" to something else. I tested it by changing the main group's name from "main" to "original" before deleting the sole subgroup, and the main group's domain-style name remained intact this time.

Still, it is unexpected that a main group named "main" would lose its name.

You can fully customise the subject line tag. Is that what you mean?

On your group's "settings" page, scroll down to "Message Formatting" and see the field called "Subject Tag".

I did that very thing, for the same reason (now obsolete since the YGs shutdown.)? On the Settings page, scroll down to the Message Formatting area and look for the section labeled Subject Tag.? It will have your current choice, so just add -gio to it, then scroll down to Update Group.

Deleting all subgroups causes main group name to revert

Hello

Okay, I had to test this out because it wasn't clear what would happen.? I created a subgroup for my test group, and then later I deleted the subgroup again (so that there were no more subgroups).? Unexpectedly, the main group's name then got reverted back to the original original name, and it appears as if I can no longer send e-mails to the main group's domain-style e-mail address.? This is either a bug or something that ought to be communicated more clearly.

So, this means that if I have "[email protected]"?and I create a subgroup called "one",?and rename the main group from "main" to "two", and I then delete the subgroup, mails can no longer be sent to "[email protected]" and must be sent to "[email protected]" again.? Essentially this means that one must always keep at least one dummy subgroup alive in order to maintain the domain-style group e-mail address.? Is that right?

The impression I got from the help files is that the group address change after creating a subgroup is non-reversible.

Possible to display [groupname-gio] in subject line?

Is it possible to change the group settings so that [groupname-gio] is displayed? in subject line of group emails rather than [groupname ]? There was an option like that in YGs but I cannot find it here. It would be to help members distinguish mail coming from various versions of one of my groups, from the original YG as well as a similar google group. Linda N

These errors are common with charter, rr, and a few other email services.? As was mentioned yesterday, a 4xx code (452 and 421) is considered a soft bounce.? For whatever reason (or none) the service has delayed accepting the message.? GIO will attempt to send the message again later.? The only way to avoid it is for the member to use another email service that doesn't do it.? GIO is still 'small' compared to Google and Yahoo, but as it grows and its reputation becomes better known, these interruptions should become more limited.

BTW, I have limited knowledge of this, so I hope Lena or one of the other email gurus will correct me if/when I make a mistake.

Annick,

I think the simple answer is to consider the groups to both be independent fully functional groups. The only special criteria that I am aware of is that members of the sub-group must also belong to the main group.

In other words, when you are looking at the main group, you see archives and photos and so on only for that group. You have to change to viewing the sub-group if you want to see archives and photos, and so on of the sub-group.

This is for privacy reasons.? If your group doesn't mind revealing the entire thing, go to Admin > Settings, second area down is Privacy, bottom option is for "Hide Email Addresses In Archives".? If you set that to "Do not mask email addresses in the archives." they'll be visible online.

Full Email Address Truncated

A member sent an email with the email address of another individual in the text of the message. If you look at the email as received in an inbox the entire address is displayed.? If you view the message in the archives the address is tructated to xxxxx.yyy@.....? If you look at the source code the full address is there. If you click on the truncated address to send a reply to that individual you on get the truncated address on the TO line.?

Any words of wisdom of why and is their a fix?

Re: Space used

OK, understood.
My group, after eliminating duplicates in the e-mailed list, currently has the following:
E-mailed is 766 photos using 293 Mb of space, or an average of 382Kb per photo.
Photos is 576 photos using 535 Mb of space , or an average of 913 Kb per photo.
Files is 132 Mb but that is not a concern.

What troubles me is that it appears that the e-mailed attachments, appearing in a
separate "folder" in the Photos section appear to be counted twice!
I looked at the Photos (not the e-mailed atts) and found that they are mostly
30-60 Kb each, much smaller than the 382Kb of the more recent E-mailed
photos from attachments. Most of the actual Photos were taken with old cameras log ago
and so are small.

As an experiment to see if the 766 photos were counted twice I added all photos together
and got 1342 photos.
If they were 382 Kb each, average, they would occupy 510 Mb of space.

That is enough to suggest that since the e-mailed photos are located in the Photos section,
they are being counted twice, and my free group really has a lot more space available that is
reported. Hope this is understandable.

I can invite one of you to be a Member if it would help clear this up.

Your opinion please.

Thanks,
Richard
