How does the sub-group(s) work when reading online?
The same as any other group. In most respects sub-groups are exactly the same as regular groups. The differences mainly involve the fact that the members of the subgroup must be members of the primary group.
?
?
Are messages presented to the users purely in accord with the "visibility" rules?
The subgroup has its own Settings page. With mostly the same controls as any other group.
?
It's Visibility setting allows it to be listed in the primary group or not, and its messages to be visible to the subgroup members only, to the primary group members, or even to the public.
?
?
What about people who are members of both the "members" and the "board"? Do they get two copies or does have the logic that says "once is enough"?
Messages are posted to the subgroup are emailed only to the subgroup members, in accordance with their Subscription settings for that subgroup (Individual, Digest, etc.).
?I've subscribed to your test list. Thanks.
Likewise for messages posted to the primary group.
?
So a member of a subgroup would receive two copies of a message only if the sender of that message sent it to both the primary and the subgroup posting addresses. I'm not sure there's any good reason for doing that.
?
?
Since we can't be certain that all Board members are also members of the main group, what would be the construct using "NAIA..." and "Members" and "Board"?
To operate the way I suggested the board members would have to be subscribed to the primary group as well. There's no way around that. They can, however, be set to No Email in the primary group if the primary group's messages would be a distraction to them.
?
Whether they are members of the parent organization in real life or not is a separate question, and not necessarily material to the mailing list organization. The only way I can see a problem with this requirement is if those particular board members should be excluded from accessing the material in the primary group. But that seems far-fetched.
?
I'm using a rather careful approach as this is something we never considered and if mis-handled, can't be easily undone.
Understood. If you want to experiment with the features of a group with subgroups, feel free to request membership in my test group, .

Messages to aplus.net domains not working

Multiple groups I either own or am a member of:

  • I can send mail to them from my domain (hosted by aplus.net).
  • I can see my mail messages are being received via the groups.io web interface.
  • Other recipients who have single-message delivery set are seeing my messages via their regular mail service.
  • BUT! Neither I nor my wife (who both have mail service through aplus.net-hosted domains) are getting mail on any of them since early this afternoon CST.
  • I have disabled all spam filters, and all other mail filters during tests. I have checked all my trash and spam folders. No sign of any messages at all.
  • I contacted my ISP hosting my domain, and they claim that there is no sendmail log of any traffic from groups.io to my email address after about noon CST.
Completely baffled. I have spent in excess of $600 transferring groups to groups.io. I realize it is a very busy time for our hosts, especially since they got no warning about Yahoo's (effective) termination of Yahoo Groups. But that said, I would hope spending some do-re-mi would make a difference here.

HALP!

are the transferred members and messages still visible on Yahoo Groups

Hi, I am getting ready to transfer a large group.? I am wondering when the members get transferred, are they still a member on the yahoo group they were transferred from?? Or, are all the members completely transferred over and I will have a group with no members on Yahoo??? The same question for the 70,000 messages we have there.?? Is this "transfer" actually a copy and the original group stays the same until I delete it (which will be soon after)?? Thanks

Does it happen every time, or just every now and then?

I get a weird digest occasionally with similar symptoms. I don't think it's related to the footer, though. What usually happens is the left margin is indented way over to the right.

I suspect it's an html tag that isn't closed properly and spills over into a subsequent message....could be related to editing messages during moderation, but I haven't investigated this enough to confirm anything. I guess I'm not easily annoyed, although others (particularly my spouse) would argue that point. :-)

Like Samuel, I doubt it's the HR tag.

Re: fixed width line in footer forces sideways scrolling

She uses Gmail, and I just noticed she's receiving list mail in digest form. I'll have to double-check whether it ever happens with any other emails, but it seemed to be pretty specific to Groups.io

In case this helps, here's a screenshot she sent:

David -- Your groups should be in the "Your Groups" pull-down menu (of course). If there are none there, then you're definitely logged in under the "wrong" email address. I'm at a loss to suggest what the "correct" one could be.

It has been previously reported that merging two email addresses could cause someone to lose ownership of a group if you merged the one the owned the group into another one that didn't. I didn't know the same thing could occur with changing it, and I also don't know if you can regain ownership by changing it back.

I'm kinda with Duane that you'll probably need the help of support to extricate you from this predicament. It's been said many times before here in GMF, but it bears repeating:? Set up a password for yourself, and find a trusted co-owner for all your groups.

It's really a lot easier to do these things with a full-width screen. Further troubleshooting efforts are best pursued on a less restrictive device.

I can't find them - even when using a desktop computer!? Here's a screenshot as seen on a desktop computer - where do I look for them? I'm pretty sure that this is seen as a new account. When I look for "recent bounces", I see "No bounces", but I know there were many, which is why I changed the email address.

I have read all mails in this threa^H^H^H^H^Htopic, but I'm experimented
a bit to see if it's possible to accept an invitation by e-mail using an
e-mail address that is different from the one that the invitation was
sent to. Answer: yes. And the activity log does not show that a user
had accepted an invitation by mail while using a different mail address.

Unfortunately, the invitation does not state clearly which e-mail
address is being invited (it does shows it in the "TO" field, but some
e-mail programs show the person's name instead of his e-mail address in
the "TO" field.)

This means that e.g. if her mail is being forwarded to another e-mail
address, and she uses that other address as her usual address from which
she sends mail and with which she logs in, she will have received the
invitation, and she will have been able to "accept" the invitation by
e-mail address, but she will not be able to send mail to the group from
her mail program.

I believe this is where aliases come in. She should register an account
at Groups.io under the address that you want her to subscribe, and log
into that account, and then add her other address (the one that she
sends from) as an alias.

/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Profile-and-Email-Address-and-Merging-Accounts

She logs herself in and her name and account are visible to her on
the home page...
I'm not sure if you've already tried this, but:

When she clicks her name in the top right corner, it shows the e-mail
address that her account is in. Please double-check what is the e-mail
address that is shown there when she claims to be logged in.

Re: Direct Add limits

1) You can input all of them at once. See this wiki page about using a spreadsheet.

/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-Members

I will leave 2 and 3 for someone else. Hmm, here you say that you DID transfer members.

If so, it seems you are making work for yourself.?

Frances,
?
The transfer process does not bring over the yahoo members that are bouncing.? Since I was not responsible for maintaining the Yahoo members, I have no idea of how many of the addresses bouncing in Yahoo had temporary problems and may still be legit.? So I'm direct adding them and figure I'll sort out the bouncing on GIO.? Though I did not read the wiki link you sent me until just now, that is the process I followed (using concat Excel function) with the exception that I just pasted the cells into the direct add box, I didn't create a text file first.? I looks like it worked okay.??

What Frances said.

The customized message appears at the top of the page prior to sending. It also appears as an entry in the activity log, but without formatting.

3) Can I see if a particular subscriber was a result of the transfer from Yahoo or a direct add? and if so where? It seems I've read posts to this group that makes me think that is possible.
Click open that person's record in the Member List and then the button at the top that says Activity History. If you added them, the oldest entry in their record will say that.?

Adding someone by transfer does not generate an intelligible log entry, or at least it didn't when I did my transfer two years ago.

4) Once they are added, how do I check in GIO to see if they continue to bounce?
They will show up in the Bouncing view of the Member List. Virtually every one of them will probably do exactly that.?

Translation for Groups.io? #translation #wiki

Several people have mentioned that their members don't read / speak much English. I seem to recall others saying that they have translated some parts into the main language of the group.

Would it be of interest to have a wiki section for this? Where those of you who have created ?a mini dictionary or some other help sheets in foreign languages could post or link your tools??The GMF wiki is editable by all members of GMF.

Frankly I don't know what exists, but sharing what has been created might be useful!

Re: Direct Add limits

Suzanne H,

1) Is there a limit to how many members I can direct add?

No, you may submit as many addresses as you like at once.

However, if you submit more than 20 in a 24 hour period a temporary hold will be put on that batch, for review by Groups.io. You'll be notified by email when the batch is approved (this is an anti-spammer check).

2) I've done them in batches and customized the standard email that gets sent a little differently each time.? Is there a place I can see what the notice said exactly that was sent to a particular member?

There's a preview pane on the Direct Add page that shows the merged message, for what it is worth.

What I do is include an alternate email address of mine in each batch, so I receive a copy to verify. Afterward I remove that alternate address from the group before the next batch.

3) Can I see if a particular subscriber was a result of the transfer from Yahoo or a direct add? and if so where?

One clue is if their Join date is prior to the date you created the Groups.io group.

If you open the subscriber's page in the Members list you can click on the Activity History tab for that subscriber. The oldest entry would normally show how they joined, but if they were transferred there is no entry showing that. Hmm... maybe that should be a bug report.

4) Once they are added, how do I check in GIO to see if they continue to bounce?

In the Members list they'll have Bouncing or Bounced badges next to their email address. Also, they'll appear in the Bouncing view of the Members page.

Easiest way to check would be to try to send me an invite and when I accept it, you can verify if the system works.

But why does she get mails from the group into her outlook? And why does she see her name on the front page of the group?

AFAIK you can see the message Admin > Activity > search by the member's
e-mail address. It shows something like this:

------------------------------------------------------------
Your Name <yourname@...> invited theirname@...
to subscribe with message "THE ENTIRE MESSAGE APPEARS HERE"

Yes, in the same place: Admin > Activity > search for member
