Received from Shal Farley at 3/7/2019 11:00 PM UTC:

You can already turn off the Message-ID substitution, with the downside that Gmail will not place the returned message in your Inbox (IIRC it does show as a second copy in your Sent folder). Or you can leave it on, with the downside that your user interface might have wanted to use the Message-ID for threading. I don't see that there's anything else Groups.io can do for you.

Yes!

I think it's time for Gmail users to give Groups.io a break and start asking Gmail to provide them with an option - or a more visible option that doesn't require asking GMF where to find it - that completely bypasses this nonsense that doesn't permit them to receive copies of their own messages sent from Gmail without unwanted side effects.

The problem is 100% with Gmail, not Groups.io. Like Microsoft, Google is the 500 lb gorilla who sleeps wherever the heck he wants to. If I had a gorilla wanting to sleep where I slept, I'd sleep elsewhere. There are less troublesome places than Gmail to use as an email provider.

File renaming

Hello,

I run a couple of groups for baseball leagues, using APBA's Baseball for Windows. When people attach files, apparently some (though not all?) are getting renamed in a way that makes the software not recognize them as BBW files. The file names are in the format "C-[name].LPF" and "F-[name].LPF". The problem appears to be that the dash after the C or F is getting turned into an underscore ("_"), and this causes the software to ignore that when I try to load Commissioner or Franchise files. If I catch it when I save the attached files, I can rename them to the right format, but if I don't, I may think that someone has failed to send me a file at all. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Calendar Cancellations Not Sending Updates #calendar #issue

?When I sign up? for a webinar and it is subsequently cancelled, I get notification which is essentially like an RSVP
If I don't sign up and the webinar is cancelled, I'm not informed that it was cancelled except in a very small percentage of the time.
Also, if the webinar is cancelled I don't necessarily see a cancelled sign hung out on its' location either.

At least, if you cancel a meeting at gio (in a premium group) you get the opportunity to notify your RSVPs
AND the meeting grays out with a mouse over showing Cancelled

If people aren't interested in a meeting they most likely will not bother to click the Not Attending button and wouldn't care if the meeting disappeared without notice.
Unlike Google calendar, which only give delete and no cancel function.
Seems to me that's better than most calendar (free or very low cost) systems I've seen in my more than half century in software.

Andy, you initially said that "nothing happened". Now you say there is a message at the top of the screen.?What does the message say?

If the message at the top of the screen says "Your message edit has been sent", then please look in the Admin / Activity to see if there is a record of the Edit. If there is, then also look at the Activity / Members list and check the Email Activity of one or more users that have Delivery set to "Single" to confirm if there is a record of the messages going out.

Perhaps the messages are actually going out.

Groups.io never fails to send your own emailed posts back to your email. Assuming of course that your subscription is set up to receive all messages by email.

The issue is that Gmail customarily "hides" them (puts them into your Sent folder, not your Inbox). So most Gmail users' impression (including those using a POP or IMAP client) is that Groups.io isn't returning their messages - unless the Message-ID substitution option (I always want copies of my own emails) in their Account Preferences is checked.
Ah, perfect! Thank you for your help in understanding this matter.

I'll have that user uncheck their "I always want copies of my own
emails" so that they don't see this issue and return to testing.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the insight Duane.
Definitely a substantial challenge for broad based community utilization and acceptance and one we are struggling with, because folks figure when they've cancelled something, everyone gets notified.

Did a quick scan of beta but didn't see anything relative to this, so guess where I'm headed next ;-)

I now suspect that some group setting may be affecting it.

Or perhaps the user's Posting Privileges. Edits require moderation if performed by a member and a post by that member would require moderation. Perhaps that's somehow messing up the web interface for a moderator attempting to Save and Send.

Re: Honoring original Message-IDs in reflected messages

Stephano,

What do you recommend for a workaround for those who like the feature
(I always want copies of my own emails) but whose MUA works correctly?

I'm not the best person to ask, I tend not to use Thunderbird's thread view, and particularly not the Gmail web interface "Conversations" view. I'm happy just to have my messages land in the Inbox so that I can easily put them into my GMF folder (in Thunderbird's Local Folders) along with other people's messages.
Thoughts? Perhaps a feature request?

Like Gerald, I have been unable to reproduce this problem, using the same OS/browser combo.

At the time, I assumed that Mark was just quick to fix it...I now suspect that some group setting may be affecting it.

fyi: Update, on Earthlink and Groups.io

Folks: One quick update to the Earthlink-and-Groups.io saga that I've recently posted about.

A couple of days ago, I sent a feedback message to Earthlink, asking them to whitelist Groups.io because emails sent from 66.175.222.12 were definitely not Spam.

Just now, someone from Earthlink actually called me to follow up on my message. I talked through the things I was experiencing -- and emphasized the points that Groups.io admins recently cited on this forum: Groups.io emails are definitely not Spam; if Earthlink wouldn't block Yahoogroups or Google Groups emails, then it shouldn't block Groups.io; and the Groups.io IP addy should be whitelisted.

The customer service rep on the phone seemed to understand what I was trying to express ... so ... hopefully, we won't have to revisit this topic <<fingers crossed>>

:-)

Regards.

Interesting. I think I understand.

What do you recommend for a workaround for those who like the feature

They *could* have their MUA copy the message to the proper thread
(directory), but that does not guarantee the massage was received and
processed by the list.

Thoughts? Perhaps a feature request?

Groups.io normally passes the Message-ID unaltered. The exception is for users who have selected I always want copies of my own emails in their Account Preference. That feature was created as a work-around for Gmail users specifically, Gmail uses the Message-ID to "hide" the returned message from the user (because the ID already appears as "sent").

Only that user receives the replaced Message-ID, and only for messages where he/she was the original sender.

There is no group-wide way of controlling this. It is an account (not subscription) setting for each user.

Honoring original Message-IDs in reflected messages

I'm evaluating Groups.io as a possible platform for TianoCore:

One issue that we've come up with is in regards to message threading,
specifically how the Message-ID seems to be changed for some reflected
emails.

I believe the issue I'm seeing is discussed here:

/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8420

If I select "I always want copies of my own emails" in my user
preferences, it does indeed send me messages, which is good. :)

However, as mentioned in the above thread, Groups.io seems to be
changing the Message-ID field. For example, if I send a message to the
list and CC another list member, then compare message IDs I see:

Message-ID from CC'd member: <SOME_HASH@EMAIL-DOMAIN>
Message-ID from reflected email: <[email protected]>

This might be great for gmail users, but for those MUAs that actually
honor proper threading, this feature breaks threading.

Is there a way to stop groups.io from altering the Message-ID in
reflected emails?

Cheers,
Stephano
