About Google groups [correction: Google+]

?
Be prepared for a whole bunch of groups moving to groups IO because Google groups are closing.? I am a mod in a? Google group and just got word today that no more Google groups will be able to be created as of 2/4 and they will be deleting groups starting in April.

[mod note: as mentioned later in this topic, the closure is of Google+, not Google Groups. Google+ is (was) Google's challenger to Facebook.]

The work-around is to take your group off moderation, and set up all your subscribers as override:moderated. Not recommended.

I suspect this change was requested by an Enterprise group.

I have had that happen to me and I think it was due to the? fact that it was written using a different email address?that I was using at the time for the group. I am no longer using that email and it has become an alias. So it's messages are moderated.?

Good morning!

I have some auto delivery messages that go out once per month. Up until today, they were working fine. However, for two of my groups this morning, those messages got caught in the moderation queue and I got this message:

A message was sent to the group?/g/group name?from?[email protected]?that needs to be approved.?

Does anyone know why this happened? I have changed nothing in the last month in the way of settings, and the January first messages went out fine, with no approvals required.

Thanks for any help!

Chris -- Attached are screenshots from my test this morning, just to confirm what I did yesterday.

1.jpg -- Original message I sent to my test group using a Subscriber (GMail) account. I am selecting Edit Message.
2.jpg -- Me deleting the photo with my Owner account. As soon as I click on "Save Without Sending," the message redisplays with an Edited tag.
3.jpg -- Notification I received back from groups.io at my GMail account.

Note that it says "A complete copy of the message is attached." Ironically, when I scroll down the attached message still contains the photo...and if I click on it, the clickable link still works, and the original photo is downloaded! But there is no hint of it in the online message archive, or in the Emailed Photos folder.

This is somewhat disconcerting, but the fact remains that I got a notification back. Please consider the possibility that notifications are being sent but your email provider is filtering them.

Bruce

Re: How to make my group a restricted group #addmembers

Hi Foon,
Please help me find instructions on how to make it a restricted group?
Using the menu options on the left go to Admin > Settings.?? Scroll down to the Spam Control section and you will see the restricted membership option checkbox at the top of the list.

If you are thinking of getting (or have) a premium plan then this gives you additional options for adding members to your group. See the GMF Wiki at

So is the assertion that members are notified if an attached photo they emailed is deleted actually true? I accept that it might have been once but at the moment... it would appear not. It certainly didn't work for me.
I realised that there was a further scenario to test; what happens if a Moderator deletes an attached photograph at the moderation stage and then releases the message to the group in question?

I tried it; I posted as a "member" with an attached photo*; I then received notification of the pending message to my Moderator's email address. I then deleted the photo attachment and released the message to the test group. It was duly posted on the group (minus the photo) and the "posted" email back to me as an ordinary member turned up, again minus the photo. There was no notification within that message that there been any sort of deletion (or other editing) and there was no separate message to that effect either. As an aside Edits performed as part of the moderation process do not show up with a blue Edit flag either, just in case anyone was wondering.

In short I have been unable to identify any situation whereby the deletion of an attached photograph is the subject of a notification back to its originator.

Chris

* A slightly drawn out process because I found that my "ordinary membership" had been surreptitiously upgraded to being a moderator, so I had to put my alter ego back on moderation. :)

How to make my group a restricted group #addmembers

Hello

I've just signed up to groupd.io.

I've created a new group. Please help me find instructions on how to make it a restricted group? I've been searching and cannot find the settings.

Thank you!
Foon

Re: Convert Main Group to Subgroup? #subgroups

You can create/name the main and subgroups, but there's no way to move messages around.? It has been suggested on the beta group (official suggestion box for the site) in the past, but has not been implemented.? If there aren't too many messages, you could manually send them to the new subgroup and delete them from the main group, but all would be attributed to you.? My 2nd suggestion would be to set up the group/subgroup as you want and just start over by deleting the current messages in the main group.

Convert Main Group to Subgroup? #subgroups

Melektoth

I'm new to groups.io. I created a main group, but now I want to see if I can convert that to a subgroup and create a new main group. Or else move the messages of the main group to a subgroup.

The situation is that there are messages on the main group that I'm realizing are far better in a subgroup (more privacy, fewer people seeing it, etc). I want to generalize the role of the main group and so move the more specific messages into a subgroup.

Is there any way to go about doing this? Or what would you suggest I do?

Re: Mesages not making it to the group

Resolution of the issue from support...
?

"I have tracked down and fixed the problem. The issue was that the record in the database where we keep the next message number for your group had not been updated for some reason after the last successful message was posted. So we ended up with a unique constraint violation when trying to add a new message with an already existing message number.

I've never actually seen this happen before in the system. Please let me know if you have any other issues. "

We need to port the members, messages, photos and files.

Premium and Enterprise groups get priority for support and for transfers. The pricing page used to say that, but Mark took down that row in the table because he wasn't able to articulate what "priority" means.

Still, if you're planning on an upgraded group (and especially Enterprise) that might provide Mark at Groups.io with extra motivation to work out whatever it is that Yahoo / Verizon Media did this time. You, and he, will probably both be hesitant to make actual commitments, but just knowing it is a possibility may tip the scales a bit, especially if he knows of others too.

Re: questions about bouncing

Holly

Thanks, but I very much doubt more than a couple of my group members use the web interface. Almost certainly none of those who are currently bouncing. Email works fine (well, normally :) I just couldn't find enough information on the wikis and in the archives for this group, the Help group, and the Beta group, to allow me to tell my bouncers what to expect. Fortunately, one person was able to forward to me the bounce probe, and problem is solved - provided Charter gets its act together, that is.

Re: questions about bouncing

Holly -- It is difficult to purposely create a bouncing situation unless a provider is acting up. Now that you have an actual copy of the bounce probe (I have never seen one), I suggest you upload it to the Files section (as a PDF or whatever) so we can refer others to it when they ask the same question.
