Migration from Facebook group to groups.io?

Jim Moen

I am current president of a national dog club.? Our Boards began using Yahoo Groups more than 15 years ago, but as YG quality degraded, the then-Board moved to a secret Facebook group for online communication and collaboration.? While FB works as a social networking tool and is excellent popping the latest post to the top, we have found it is not good at pulling related posts together, and in fact, it is very hard to find a previously-read post.? It really only works if people log onto FB at least once a day, preferably several, and that is not true of many of our Board members.

So we are looking for a tool that will help us communicate better and organize posts/comments into a set of topics.? It appears groups.io with its subgroups would be a good solution.

What we want now is a way to migrate all our posts and comments to this secret FB group? over to groups.io.? Security should not be a problem, since everyone in this secret group can manually see every post and comment.? But many tools that researchers used to study FB and which included ways to extract this information have been shut down by FB due to their publicity problems regarding data privacy.??

Does anyone know of a way to migrate a FB group to groups.io?

Re: Emails not going out?

Barry,

If I send to all groups, I should get 8 emails back. Lately, I have
been getting anything between 0- 8 back,
The spam filter is the usual #1 suspect in such cases, but since you've checked that...

Have a look on your Subscription page for one of the groups where you did /not/ receive a message back. On the Email Delivery History tab there may be some information about the missing message, if it was in fact rejected by your email service. Or, if the missing message was the most recent message sent to you by the group it may confirm that your email service accepted the message - in which case ...

If your email service is "powered by Gmail" it is possible that Gmail's algorithms are hiding the extra messages from you. Gmail notices when you have more than one copy of a message and tends to show you only one of them. They judge copies to be "the same" message not by content, but by the Message-ID field in the header. In the case of a single post to multiple groups, all the outbound messages would contain the Message-ID of the message you sent*. But this behavior should be consistent, not hit-or-miss, so I'd have to judge this as an unlikely answer.

Shal
* Your account's Preferences page includes the "I always want copies of my own emails" checkbox. If checked then Groups.io replaces the Message-ID on messages sent back to you, from you (your account address), to avoid this hiding issue.

Emails not going out?

I am an owner of 8 groups, recently moved over from Yahoo.

My own personal email address is included in all groups, so as to check
that the email I have sent to the group, has gone out. If I send to all
groups, I should get 8 emails back. Lately, I have been getting anything
between 0- 8 back, but on checking? with someone I know in the group,
they have got the email!! Now I don't know if I am the only one not
getting the emails, are others in the groups also*not* getting them? I
have checked my spam folder and found nothing in there.

Barry.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log (covering Mark's vacation too):

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: If you click the Clear button after filtering archives, it
will now take you back to /topics or /messages (as appropriate),
instead of keeping you in /search.
Previously not only did it leave you in /search, it didn't update the search results to be unfiltered. Or at least that's what happened for me, Mark said he couldn't reproduce it.

CHANGE: Previously we would treat web posts as new topics, regardless
of whether they had the same subject as a previous topic. This was
different from how we treat email messages, where we combine new
messages into existing topics when we can. Now we do the same for
web posts.
Though I'm generally in favor of being consistent, I'm actually opposed to this change. The button says "New Topic", it ought to mean it (Mark isn't talking about the Reply link under a message here).

Comments about these are welcome:

CHANGE: From the activity log, clicking on an added/modified file used
to bring you to the enclosing folder. I've added a folder icon next
to the file name that does that now, and clicking on the file takes
you directly to the file.
BUGFIX: When viewing an individual +owner message, the pending
messages permission was required, which was inconsistent with other
pages.
CHANGE: Changed default subject line for message rejection notices
from 'Your message was rejected' to 'Your message was not approved'
BUGFIX: Fixed screen reader access on the create and edit hashtag
pages.
CHANGE: Wording improvements to the Send Log In Link page (thanks
Shal!)
INTERNAL: Upgraded production to use go 1.11 compiler.
INTERNAL: Parallelized message generation when viewing /topic or
/messages to speed up web response.
INTERNAL: Added a database index to speed up deleting of topics.
INTERNAL: Change the database code to make it seamless when doing
database schema changes.
CHANGE: Add group upgrade options for non-profit enterprise pricing,
to allow self-service non-profit upgrades.
INTERNAL: Cleanups of various database structures/repaying some
technical debt

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Question re Subgroup membership

Thanks Duane and Bruce for your insights.
We are a charity knitting group - Australia wide - and looking at combining our smaller State Groups all into one area.
I am testing this but I think the problem will be solved by setting all of the subgroup members email delivery in the Main group to Special Notices only.
It is the many Event reminders (concerning our meetings across the country) that are the problem.
Fingers crossed this will be the answer and I can go ahead and combine the groups.

I must say, the help and advice that is available on the GMF is invaluable to us newbies!!

If they hit option enter on the link in question the file in theory should begin to dl and end up in their dl folder.

There is no definitive answer to this question.?

If you click on the file name in groups.io, it will be sent as a binary data stream. What happens then depends on your OS, browser settings, what add-ons you might have installed, and even the data type of the file being downloaded.

For example, I have a Chrome add-on that causes PDF files to display in the browser window instead of downloading it. To actually download I have to hover? my mouse cursor at top-right until the download watermark shows up, and click on it. At that point it will actually pop up a dialog box so I can tell the file where to go.

Similarly, photos will generally fail to directly download, but instead redisplay in the browser. I have to right-click on them and do a "save as" in the resulting dialog box to actually download them.

Some information on downloading with the Safari browser can be found here:?

Hoping something in there helps,
Bruce

Beth,

If I didn't know how to use a Mac (I don't), I would ask Google.

Hi

A Mac is just the same. I just tried (to confirm) and it goes to downloads folder. Then you can share, save, move - whatever from there.?

Click on the title or if the document is in a folder, click to open the folder and click on the title of the document to download.

Easy peasy!

It is possible that your member may be able to share without downloading, if her computer is set up to share with her Google drive. Right click on the title. See screenshot below.

Hello Groups.io Support Team,

I believe I've found a Groups.io bug, and this is to report what I've found. And to ask for help in getting it fixed.

Background.?
I'm the owner and chief moderator of Nordhavn Owners Group or NOG. Our Groups.io address is:?/g/nog?
Our group transferred from Yahoo Groups on 2-23-2018. Our group has 750 members and averages a dozen or more posts a day. The group exists for owners of Nordhavn yachts, and has been in business since 2003. I've been owner/chief moderator since 2009.

My name is Milt Baker. To avoid confusion, I'll refer to myself in the bug report below as Milt.

Bug Report.?
NOG on Groups.io has a database called Owners List. Records 1 thru 260 in this database were transferred over from NOG's Yahoo Groups Database (AKA Owners List) to Groups.io 2/23/2018 when our group was moved. All of those records appeared on Groups.io with Milt's name and picture at the top. I'm almost certain Milt's name and picture there now had to do with the changeover from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io since Milt was the owner of NOG at Yahoo Groups and is the owner of NOG at Groups.io. My hypothesis is that a bug somewhere in the Groups.io transfer code caused Milt (as owner of the Groups.io NOG group) to be shown as the owner of every line/record. The Owners Group on NOG's at Yahoo Groups did not show Milt on any record except the one for himself.

?

2. All records in the NOG database on Groups.io numbered 261 or higher (all created 4/4/2018 or later) appear to function correctly, no doubt because they were created directly by the member on Groups.io, rather than being transferred over from Yahoo.

?

3. The database permissions on NOG on Groups.io is set to the most permissive setting possible ("Subscribers can view and edit tables").

?

4. The "line owner" in the NOG Owners List database is the only one allowed make changes on that line. Since Groups.io sees Milt as the line owner, Milt is the only person who can make changes. Ergo, the person in the line/record cannot edit the line/record.

?

5. On a hunch, I checked a different Groups.io group that transferred over from Yahoo shortly before NOG did. That group is NordhavnBigBoats group (/g/nordhavnbigboats), owned and operated by my friend Ken Williams. I'm also a member of that group. I checked and found that the same error occurred in transferring that group's Owners List database from Yahoo to Groups.io. Ken is shown at the top of all the records transferred over. Twenty-four of the 25 records in the database are affected.

Very interesting that it's taken almost a year to uncover this issue! That¡¯s a good indication that the NOG Owners List database is barely being used by our members, so the issue I'm raising here is more an academic one than a serious problem for our group. Nonetheless, I'd like to sort it out, and I would appreciate help from Groups.io in doing so. I also believe this apparent bug ought to be fixed so it does not affect other groups transferring from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io.

Finally, let me say our group's experience on Groups.io has been first-rate, a giant step up from Yahoo Groups. Our moderators and members are very happy to have such a wonderful, reliable, smooth-operating home for our group. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mark and the rest of the Groups.io team!

Milt Baker
Chief moderator and owner
Nordhavn Owners Group

Re: Mail List Reporting Options

Thanks Duane! I was hoping there was a simpler way through some sort of reporting that I might have missed but will probably go down the route of export/spreadsheet. Thanks!

Try logging out of Facebook. Now try to access the page.?You should be able to open the Facebook page, even when logged out.

If not, then you still don't have the page settings set up right. See also?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Facebook-Integration?

Good luck,
Bruce?

Facebook Integration Issue again #integration

So I've specifically set up a public "page" to integrate with our iGroups.? I've given it a couple of weeks, and when I go to try and add the page under the integration tab, I get a message that our Facebook page URL is not a valid Facebook name.? Is there something I'm missing?? ?

Re: an error occurred ..

Sorry. My bad, maybe. Thunderbird did not tell me an upgrade was waiting. Mozilla products tend to just stop working properly with an unknown pending update, which i discovered when I did a restart.

I can't be sure without seeing the entire reply, but it appears that an attempt was made to send a message using the IP address that isn't allowed to send mail.? From what I could find, that IP is owned by Total Server Solutions L.L.C.? It could have been a glitch or someone 'playing'.

Apologies, that was mentioned in passing.? Based on the information so far, I'd suspect the member that isn't very active.? One more session with videotron may totally solve this, if they're willing to help.? It seems like they would have a record of the address that marked the spam.? I doubt they would give that out, but maybe they could verify that it WASN'T the member with a problem (reverse confirmation.)? This is assuming that you haven't sent 50 special notices in a month. ;>)

Unfortunately, as Shal mentioned, some services tell folks to mark messages as spam to unsubscribe instead of doing it properly.
