All it takes is a web browser... have they tried the Safari web browser that comes with the phone?

Re: Chat limits?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no limit (other than the number of members in a group ;>)? I'd do a test chat well in advance to see what, if any, problems you might run into before attempting to use it for a 'real' meeting.

iPhone App???

I'm in the process of moving another group to Groups.io, and a few memebrs there have asked about an iPhone app for Groups.io.? I cannot find one at Apple's App Store.

Searching the archives here, it appears there is no such app.? But using the search "iPhone" I find a huge number of members here on the Group Manager's Forum are using iPhones.

Does anyone here know whether an iPhone App for Groups.io is on the Wish List or, if not, how to get that added?? Seems like a good idea for Groups.io.

Many thanks,

Milt Baker

I just did a test in one of my groups.? I created a hashtag that was to delete the thread/topic after 1 hour, then added it to an old thread.? It didn't even take a full hour.? According to the Activity Log, 4 minutes later the thread was deleted due to an expired hashtag.? I think this is as close as we can get to the 'no archives' option.? The biggest concern I can see is that you'd need to make sure the hashtag is used on all threads.? Or you could go in and manually delete the threads any time.

There should be no messages on the group Home page, only the activity summary.? You may be a bit confused because when you choose one of your groups from the Your Groups list, it takes you to the Topics view of that group, not the home page.

Re: Question Please

Shal wrote this not long ago:

In most email list services there's a central store of all the prior message. Sometimes called an archive, the usual intent is to have a quasi-permanent repository of the past messages. So one option for you is to simply ignore the old messages, as they aren't counted against any quota for your group.
?
If you feel that the messages are ephemeral and should be deleted there is a "Topic Duration" hashtag option that will let you set a limit after which the topic is automatically deleted. Two problems with that for your purpose:
?
o It applies to whole topics, not individual messages.
o You have to get the hashtag onto every topic.
?
You can go in and edit each new topic to add the hashtag. I don't know what happens if you edit an old topic and add a hashtag with a limit, maybe nothing if the topic is already older than the specified limit.

Note that your message archive doesn't count against your?quota.
In the Pricing page on the bottom of the page, it says:

The following are counted towards the storage limits for your group:

  • Files
  • Photos
  • Images in databases
  • Images in wiki pages
  • Message attachments

Messages themselves are not counted towards the storage limits, only any attachments.

I think it's rather ironic that Yahoo is one of the main enforcers of the FBL policy when it comes to receiving emails, but don't seem to honor it when sending them.? Until the FBL goes away, if ever, sites like Groups.io will need to honor it or face blacklisting from email services.? It's also unnerving that Yahoo (and others) will decide that an email is spam, them use their seemingly arbitrary decision to send anything from that source to the spam folder.? The main alternatives for now are to get folks to check for (possibly mislabeled) spam or change email providers to one that doesn't use FBL.? Neither is a simple operation, but both work very well in most cases.

If you think you are going to ¡°educate¡± these people, you are TOTALLY WRONG. They don¡¯t need to be a mechanic to drive their car. They should not have to learn to do something (every month or week!) to use . They have no idea how to access their spam folder or successfully move a message out of the spam/trash folder. ?
Coming from years on Yahoo, this policy is a HUGE step backwards for my group.?

The "Email when a member joins/leaves this group" checkbox is in the
Notifications section on each mod/owner's Subscription page. Also their
page you can access through the Members list.

I do not want to save them on the home page.

Chat limits?

Is there a maximum number of people that can be in the chat at once?

We have an event coming up next year and may use the chat function for some of our virtual gatherings.? Was wondering if there is a maximum number of people that can be in the chat function at the same time.

Thanks!

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW/TESTING: You can define a Display Template to specify how database
tables are displayed. This is in limited testing for the moment.
This might be interesting. Anyone here in the limited test?

Comments about these others are also welcome:

NEW: Photo search.
CHANGE: Cleaned up and modernized all the photos pages.
CHANGE: Ignore any autoreply headers if the message is to an email
integration (normally we would drop those messages).
BUGFIX: Fixed the email address and URL in the bounce message for
messages sent to enterprise groups where you are not subscribed.
NEW: New database column type 'HTML Paragraph'.
SYSADMIN: Replaced a badly behaving webserver.
SYSADMIN: Updated nsqd on all machines.
INTERNAL: More infrastructure work to make it easier to bring up new
machine instances.
CHANGE: Cap images at a max of 10k per side, regardless of group
setting.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: prevent people from joining subgroups?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Jan,

Where is setting page?

Go to the subgroup you wish to control. You can do that from your list of groups (click on the Groups.io logo, or the Your Groups menu in the title bar:

If you click on the logo (while logged in) you should see a list of your groups:

For the example group, there is the primary, Main, and two subgroups, Sub-A and Sub-B. Click on the subgroup you wish to control.

When you are at the subgroup, it has the same Settings as the primary group (although some options have different choices):

If you don't see those page buttons click on the triangle next to the word Admin to open up the list of Admin pages.

Note the badge next to the word Home at the top of the list -- as an owner or moderator of the primary group you automatically have that same role in all subgroups.

Then scroll down to the options to control the Files section:

Re: How best to educate about the 'Removed for SPAM' problem

Samuel,

Well, my opinion (which I think is shared by some others here) is that
"informing the member" should be a two-pronged approach: ...
and inform the moderator ...
That is already done.

Moderators get a notice:
"Subscriber was removed for marking a message as spam"

(That's assuming the moderator opted in for notices of members leaving and joining.)

Since some users also use the web interface, an idea might be to put
up a large notification there informing the user that there is
something about his subscription that requires attention.
That is done for Bounce status, I don't know about unsubscribed for spam.

For this to work, the user would have to be suspended, not
unsubscribed.
It could work either way. When the person logs in the system would know who they are, and must have a record of them being "unsubscribed for spam" - else I don't believe the resume link that is sent by email could work.

Our reply to them is:? If you continue to just randomly empty your
Junk/Spam folder without restoring authentic emails as "Not Spam", then
you're going to be continually unsubbed from Groups.io, if there are
emails from the same in your Junk/Spam folder.
They are also going to delete a good number of other emails they
probably don't want to lose. I've been using one of my email addresses
everywhere on line for over twenty years, and I get a lot of spam which
ends up in my spam folder. I check it every day, and two or three times
a week there are false positives.

Re: Examples of new user and moderator help

Here's are a few. I suggest you go through the step-by-step to check for accuracy.

Changing Your Registered E-mail Address
Go to and in the upper right corner of the site, use the Pull-down menu under your name, choose Accounts, click Preferences, and enter the new e-mail address in the e-mail field. Click "Change E-mail" and you'll be sent a confirmation e-mail. Click the link in the e-mail and your new e-mail address takes effect immediately.

Access Groups.io Web Site Without an Account
Go to and in the upper right corner of the site, click Log In, and click the "Email me a link to log in" button. You'll be sent a confirmation e-mail. Click the link in the e-mail and you'll have access to the site for 30 days. After 30 days you'll be logged out and will need to log in again.

[Beth: Don't link to this temporary image in the Wiki.]

Stop Getting Copies of your Posts
Go to and in the upper right corner of the site, use the Pull-down menu under your name, choose Accounts, click Preferences, scroll to "Email Preferences," and choose whether you want to receive copies of your own messages posted to Groups.io.

Use Other E-mail Addresses to Post Messages
You can have other e-mail addresses assigned to your account. That way you can post messages to the group with any of your e-mail addresses. Go to and in the upper right corner of the site, use the Pull-down menu under your name, choose Account, click Preferences, and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click "Advanced Settings for E-mail Aliases" to add other e-mail addresses.

In fact I wondered if we might set up something in GMF to store examples of what moderators have already developed so that new moderators have something to start with.? It is just an idea for the future that I would be happy to help with.

In the meantime, does anyone have examples of how we tell a new user what GIO is all about and how to navigate both the website and email (including the infamous spam issue)??? Also, I am going to have a number of moderators that need to know how to do various tasks for the group and subgroups so I would love to provide very simple, step by step instructions.

Thanks for your help
