Hi! I'm new to this; just started my private group yesterday (to escape Yahoo!)

Question 1: What is the use/benefit of the User Name?? I was system-chided when I failed to enter one, so I did. It wouldn't let me use my real name, saying it was already in use, so this must be system-wide and not just in my group.?? Is it perhaps a Chat handle? There's nothing in Help to clarify its use.

Question 2: How can I change/delete my User Name, which appears to be a permanent part of my profile and directory entry?

Thanks,

Alex @Perk

How can I add a Constant Contact list to groups.io?

I tried adding my group?catalinafleet@...?to?? Groups.io gives me an error.?

Thanks

Re: copy paste

The text below was pasted in Firefox on a Win7 PC using the track pad (right-click -> Paste). "Paste" did not appear in the context menu until I had copied the text into the buffer. "Paste" also did not appear after I had pasted the text below.

On my Windows 7 computer with Firefox, trying to use the mouse to paste, paste isn't even an option.
Ctrl-V works fine, so I'll do that.

Re: Managing main group

I'd give some thought to hashtags also.? May not be good fit but...
AFAIK, messages cannot be moved from one subgroup to another (/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/5475284#3304) - might be an issue if people post in the wrong subgroup all the time.? [whereas you can edit the topic and change the hashtag pretty easily]
For people that?only want to get announcements and newsletters, send them as Special Notice and have members set the Special Notices Only option.
Just a thought.

Re: Number of Groups.io Members

Been awhile since the last update.? New member this morning is number 3099376, latest visible group is number 8787

Re: copy paste

Using Firefox, I can bring up the Paste option with a right-click, assuming I have anything in the clipboard.

Hope this helps,

Re: Managing main group

Each group and subgroup is pretty much independent as far as moderation and other settings.? The only restriction is that everyone must be a member of the main group before they can join a subgroup.

Other than explaining which group/subgroup is intended for certain posts, there's no explicit way to keep folks from posting in the wrong one.? There are a lot of settings that each member can choose as far as which posts they get.? Take a look at /static/help#subscription-options and the sections just below it about muting and following.

If it were me, I'd probably set up the General Discussion as the main group, then all the others as subgroups.? Then I'd set the Default Sub Settings for all of them to "Individual Messages" and "Following Only" with "First Message Also" selected.? With those settings, each person would get the first message of any thread, but after that they'd only get any they choose to follow.? You may find that other settings are better suited to your group, so look through all the options to see what might work best.

There are many options available on GIO, so it can take awhile to determine which are the best for any given group/subgroup.

Re: #hashtags #bug Lots of messages "need approval" #hashtags #bug

If none of the more obvious "Moderate" settings shows up as the problem, you might check your Attachments setting (in Message Formatting). One of the options there is to Moderate them - that is, someone would have to "okay" any messages that contain attachments. Emails with attached "cards" or those that use stationery designs could be showing up there. A URL by itself doesn't typically show as an attachment, but if there is a "preview" along with it, that could.

Dear Shal,

Thank you. I ran through your complete list. However, none of those things apply in our case.

Managing main group

please bear with me since I am a newbie...One problem we had with our yahoo groups is that all discussion threads ended up one large group, and there was no good way to ignore threads that you were not interested in.? I want to setup the new groups.io group so that everyone is automatically subscribed to an ANNOUNCEMENTS and a NEWSLETTER group, but they are free to ignore all other groups such as GENERAL DISCUSSION, EQUIPMENT, BUY-TRADE, etc.? My understanding is that the ANNOUNCEMENTS and NEWSLETTER groups would have to be subgroups of MAIN along with the others. How can I keep everyone from posting to MAIN as a default?? We will have some subscribers who are only interested in seeing announcements and the newsletter and won't care about anything else, and I would like to avoid having to set up separate groups for those two categories.??

It occurs to me that I can setup MAIN as moderated, but will that extend to the subgroups?? I really don't want to spend the time moderating the MAIN group.

Thanks

Re: #hashtags #bug Lots of messages "need approval" #hashtags #bug

Odd, I have Gmail users and that doesn't happen. There has to be something.

I sent invitations and added them. Not "direct add" that is possible with a paid group.
None were added recently.

In Spam Control
My group is restricted.
New users are moderated and they are unmoderated after 3 posts.

In Message Policies,
I allow non-subscribers to post. These are moderated.
No mail is disabled. Subscribers have to be at least receive Special Notices.

In Viruses - suspicious emails are blocked.

Hi Folks,

Is there a way to copy text from a separate writing program like Word and paste the text in to a reply?

Thanks and good health, Weogo

The standard Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V cut and paste shortcuts should work for Windows and Linux. I think it's Command-C and Command-V for MAC.

It isn't likely to be a bug.

A message will need approval if:
  • the posting member's Posting Privileges is set to Override: moderated;
  • the posting member's Posting Privileges is set to Override: new user moderated and their approval count is non-zero;
  • the posting member's Posting Privileges is set to Use Group Moderation Setting and the Moderated box is checked in the Spam Control section of the group's Settings page;
  • the Allow Non Subscribers to Post box is checked in the Message Policies section of the groups Settings page and the posting email address is not currently in the group's Members list;
  • the message Subject contains a hashtag with the Moderated box checked;
  • the Automatically Moderate Topics Older Than x days box is checked in the Message Policies section of the group's Settings page and the message is a reply to an older topic;
  • the message is a reply to a topic that a moderator? has manually set to Moderate Topic; or
  • the Viruses option is set to Moderated in the Message Policies section of the group's Settings page and the message contains suspected malware.

Did I forget any?

Re: #hashtags #bug Lots of messages "need approval" #hashtags #bug

There is a setting for unmoderating new members after a specific number of posts. If they are relatively new posters, perhaps that is the problem.
Go to Admin, Settings (it is the first one, not Default Sub Settings).
Scroll down to Spam Control.
Change the Unmoderate after to a number you prefer - perhaps 1 message.

Hope this is it!

#hashtags #bug Lots of messages "need approval" #hashtags #bug

Dear all,

We recently set up a group in which all subscribers are able to post messages without moderation. However, a huge number of messages end up in moderation ("Message Approval Needed") for no reason we can discern. We use hashtags in the group: originally they were set to be compulsory, but we unticked that option to see if solved the problem. However, it still persists. Our moderator thinks it may have some relation to URLs in messages, but some messages without URLs have been held up in the queue too. We are really not sure what the source of this problem could be, any suggestions would be welcome.

The site determines the name to use from the email address you enter.? If you just send to an email address, it will use that.? If you enter it as Joe Smith <email@ domain.com>? (without the space, needed here so you can see it all), it will use Joe Smith.
